Not Yo Mama's Bissell - Majestic Diamond in the Rough
What prompted my purchase was me, hitting rock bottom. ‘Twas Christmas just over 2 months ago, and ‘twas last week, when I was taking down my Christmas decorations, and jamming my artificial tree back into its sad box, that I realized I had no efficient way to remove the pine needles from the carpet in my living room. Down on my hands and knees with purple duct tape, I realized, this was no way to live. 20 minutes later, I had discovered that some 5-star vacuums do not cost $400 as I had naively believed, and I ordered a brand new purple vacuum to be delivered directly to my door a mere 3 days later. That day was today. And today was glorious.Beware. The vacuum is delivered in pieces. You will need a screwdriver. (Or a tequila sunrise if you prefer.) At first, I felt frustration at the lack of detail in the user’s manual, but I soon forgave Bissell, as I realized one should never start putting a machine together without first realizing there are more instructions as you flip the page. I managed to put the entire vacuum together. By myself. Because I’m an accomplished adult. Who can read.I am amazed at what this vessel can suck out of the ground on which we walk inside our homes. My life has been forever changed. This Bissell proves that my mother was right. Vacuuming DOES matter. My entire adult life, I believed that vacuuming was a hilarious joke between true adults to keep children busy and quiet for 15 minutes a week. Had I been properly educated in Family and Consumer Science in middle school, I would fully understand the importance of vacuum cleaners instead of how to sew a pillow. I have yet to make another pillow outside of the 7th grade, and I have no plans to spend any free time doing so. I do however, plan to vacuum on a regular basis for the rest of my life. These pictures should be used to scare kids straight. Like the “Meth Makes You Ugly” campaign. It works because oh my God, look at those pictures. Those are the “halfway done with my room” and the “all the way done with my room” pictures. I now know that waiting a year and a half to vacuum is equivalent to procrastinating for a year and a half on anything that you should definitely do more often, because well, look at those pictures.I can’t believe I used to make my friends take their shoes off when they came over. I can’t believe I have done yoga on that floor. (Who am I kidding? I can’t believe my friends and I have sat around in a circle drinking and playing Cards Against Humanity on that floor). I have never been so impressed with a product that I put my binge watching of Parks and Recreation on hold, simply to write a review and let the world in on a secret. The secret wonder that is the Bissell.I even used the hose attachment to vacuum the stairs and it works beautifully. (I will have to find some other product for the mysterious caramel stain, but with my newfound confidence in adulting, I think I can handle it.) With my Rapunzel locks, it was clear that I needed to clean out the now hair-coated brush, and like the champion I now am, I successfully took apart the hose attachment, cleaned out 18 months worth of hair that used to be attached to my head, and put it back together again. Like a world class Humpty Dumpty. Granted, it fell apart on accident while I attempted to remove the hair, but that did not thwart my success in restoring the attachment to its original state.I am in love with my new vacuum, and I am excited about our blossoming relationship, which I can only hope is just the beginning of a mutually rewarding partnership in life. Just in time for Valentine’s Day.Thank you Bissell and God Bless America.

Are you looking for a great deal on a vacuum cleaner? Well, here ya' go! I purchased one of these approximately 2 years ago and another one for my summer house last week. So I can speak to its power out of the box as well as the product's longevity.

1. The suction is amazing! I am so happy with this aspect. And it lasts. The suction, even after two years, is still strong.
2. It has a lot of bells and whistles for this low price. Specifically, I like the multitude of attachments. There are attachments for scrubbing, getting into high places (ie ceilings), and getting into corners (I use this mostly for carpeted stairs).
3. I like the different levels for the length of carpet. There are settings ranging from bare floors to high shag carpet. If you play around with this you'll notice that going over medium level carpet with the bare floor setting works like a charm!
4. The simplicity of cleaning - I have come to loathe those expensive machines that claim to take 97% of the "dander" and "allergens" from the floor. Well, 97% is barely anything. My air filters take 99.7%-99.9% of the dander/allergens out. So get this vacuum cleaner and a $100 Honeywell - you'll save $400 overall and not have to worry about constantly changing the filter. Back to cleaning...you just unattach the plastic box, walk it outside, and place everything into the garbage in one fell swoop. So easy! Why mess around with ridiculous contraptions? This is so easy!
5. On to the filter...There is a cleanable filter in this vacuum. I wash it approximately 1x every 6 months of fairly heavy use. It holds up well! And when I did need to replace it I only spent $2. None of these $25 filters to buy for this unit.
6. The cord is LONG. My summer house is a two-story 3/2 1,850 square feet home. I can get 90% of the house without needing to change the outlet. I only miss the far side of the Master Bedroom and the Kitchen (which doesn't have carpet anyway).

Overall, there are only three minor flaws. First, the the cord may be long but it lacks the ability to contract with a button. Not a big deal, but can be annoying. Secondly, long hair can be difficult. The hair gets stuck in some parts of the machine. I at times need to cut the hair out because it gets so tangled. Finally, my wife uses pins for her hair. These black pins seem to be all over the carpet. After hitting 10+ of these metal pins I did notice the machine made a weird noise. The 2 year-old machine still sounds perfectly, but after using the new one for only a few days there is a slightly odd noise that lasts 1/2 second when the machine turns off. I believe all the metal the machine hit slightly altered the way two pieces hit each other when the machine is turning off. Still works perfectly, but don't go over a bunch of pieces of metal with the machine (duh!).

We have two dogs and two cats so our carpets and rugs are always covered in hair! We've had this vacuum for a little over a month now and have absolutely no regrets. We vacuum every other day and it hasn't lost any suction from what we can tell at all. This might be because it doesn't have a normal fabric/paper filter as in normal vacuum. So this might not be throwing as clean air back into our rooms but it has been cleaning our carpets better than any comparably priced vacuums we have purchased in the past. The air quality isn't as important to us because we have the Bio-Shield UV-C Air Sanitizer System that I installed recently. We also haven't noticed a difference in the amount we've had to dust either. So far I would absolutely recommend this product to anyone that has pets. If I had to say one con it would be that I have to empty it so often, but we have a 2400sq ft house will carpet everywhere but the kitchen and bathrooms (at least twice in every room). I think thats because of the large amount of shedding that takes place! :) One last thing is that a lot of the negative reviews says that this is very loud and the the extendable hose is to short. This vacuum is by far the quietest I've ever owned. We can vacuum in the same room that our 6 week old daughter is sleeping in (maybe we got lucky and have a heavy sleeper?) As for the hose its not hard to use the attachment and just have your other hand holding the handle on the vacuum so it doesn't fall or hit you...... As for how long this vacuum last with the supposed belt issues in other reviews I do not know but for 80 bucks its working really good right now. Hope this helps anyone debating on buying this product, Go for it!

Update 3/30/15

This vacuum is still going strong! We've had zero issues with the belt as other people have reported. The handheld attachment is hit or miss cause with the amount of fur we get off of furniture it tends to cause it to jam cause it gets in around the moving parts (a quick one screw removal and clean around the little belt and fixed though) I've cleaned out the little sponge filter this machine has a couple times since we bought it and thats it. No loss of suction otherwise. We still have two cats and two dogs, so there's still plenty of fur that this machine gets everyday. We are actually purchasing a second one to keep in our basement instead of carrying the one between the floors.

Update 9/7/15

Still no real issues (other than having to empty it multiple times when cleaning!). I don't understand how any of my cats or dogs even have fur at this point with how much it picks up every day when we vacuum. Kinda gross lol but its doing a good job still. I mean for 80 bucks I cannot complain at all with how much fur has gone through this thing with no issues yet. As long as you maintain the machine.... which means clean out the housing. I.E take out the filter and the cyclone part of the canister and clean it outside every couple months the motor will not overheat. General cleaning maintenance, I believe, have made this last longer for me than all the other negative reviews about over heating. I mean have some common sense, maintain what you buy and it will last. I don't understand how people can expect something to be inexpensive and last forever without maintenance.

Reviewed in Canada on November 18, 2017
Purchased: October 16, 2017.
Review Date: November 18, 2017

When I purchased the machine it cost $80 CAD, which had to be one of the better low cost options at the time. After a year of use, I would have to say this vacuum exceeded my expectations. We live in a 1400 sq. ft. apartment that is ~90% carpet and we own 2 cats with 3 litter boxes. We are both allergic to the cats, but only have issues during spring. I use the machine up to 4 times a week and on average 2 times a week. A Pros and Cons comparison is the best way to review this vacuum.

Pros:
- Great suction! Our cats hardly shed, but one tends to throw litter from the 3 boxes frequently. It takes a few passes, but the vacuum picks up all the little bits and dust. Nothing is truly "One-Pass" with litter in carpet. I turn our GermGuardian Air Purifiers on the highest setting when vacuuming to make sure all allergens are filtered.
- Long power cord. Our apartment layout is a long rectangle and I can get all rooms by switching between 2 power sources.
- Easy to clean. I decided to review the vacuum today, because I just purchased replacement Pre-Motor and Post Motor Filters for the first time. I only bought them because one of the cats had a diarreha accident last night and after cleaning and then vacuuming the carpet, I figured it was time to replace both filters. The Pre-Motor Filter (focuses on allergens) probably could have been replaced months ago, but since we use Air Purifiers I haven't bothered.

Cons:
- ON-OFF Switch. I would have to agree with a few other reviews that the switch is in an awkward location, but slightly bending over to use it is only a minor inconvenience.
- Tool use. When using tools, the beater bar will continue to run. I find it's best to keep the vacuum upright to avoid the bar's brush from shooting things everywhere. The tools also fall off easily, but I hardly use them anyways.
- Height setting. It does move for each setting, just very very little. This doesn't bother me, since I only use the machine on carpet.
- BAD on hard floors. Enough said.

TIPS:
I would recommend this vacuum. Keep it clean! I wash the interior of the collection chamber and the Pre-Motor filter when I notice a small dust layer building up. I also clean the bar's brush during this time too. Primarily make use of it on carpet. I sweep hard floors into a pile, then use the hose to vacuum it up.

TL;DR
KNOW WHAT YOU ARE PURCHASING!! This is a great vacuum for the price. Yes, it is cheaper quality, but price reflects that. This machine works best on carpet. I would not recommend it if you have hard floors taking up 50% or more of your floor space. Keep the machine clean!!! Doing so will keep suction at a good level.
