I really appreciate the lightweight, the decent power and the 24" length of the B&D and at a price that allows me to buy a new when it cuts poorly. I just replaced my last one that was 10 year old. It's such a pleasure to have the B&D power and lightweight to easy accomplish my hedging chores.
It's simple to use, no instructions required. On the negative, it's rather louder than I expected, and it's fairly heavy at 7lbs (before the battery!). The weight is especially noticeable if held at/above your shoulder level. But the loud and heavy aren't an issue for long, since cutting with this tool goes much, much faster than when using pruning shears.
I picked this model over the several other B+D hedge trimmers based on it being 2" longer than the 20V models (24" vs 22"), able to handle double the thickness of branch (3/4"), and because its batteries are interchangeable with my new 40V B+D mower. You should select the model that matches other B+D equipment you own or plan to buy, which gives you either a spare battery or lets you buy a "bare" model like I did (much cheaper without the battery).
Like other battery-powered gear, the positives are instant start, no engine maintenance, no stocking fuel/oil, and most importantly no local emissions. Utility emissions are much easier to mitigate, and much more likely to transition to clean energy (and less likely to have the dangerous fine particulates emitted by small gas engines).
Nag mode: always wear safety glasses when using cutting tools.
Pruning has always been a chore for me-- but now I'm almost embarrassingly excited about using this thing to slice through the vines and bushes like a knife through butter. Recommended.
So I then started using a chainsaw, which frankly suc...ceeded in making me unhappy with the whole hedging process. The gas, the mess, the more mess, the complete inability to operate it with one arm at full extension, the ongoing likelihood that I'd cut off my leg or my head due to reckless hedge maneuvers, the ragged results.
So after buying a new cordless electric B&D lawnmower this year, I followed up by getting this trimmer (the version with no batteries included, b/c it uses the same ones as the mower), and at the risk of repeating myself and exaggerating a bit, I never thought material possessions could truly make one happy until I used this thing. It saws through seemingly anything (product info says 3/4" think which sounds about right, but I feel comfortable rounding that up to "anything") like a warm knife through room temperature cream cheese, you can wave it around with your arm extended like a gardening wizard waving a magic want, it never ever ever ever like never ever chokes on anything branchy, I've never even come close to cutting off any of my limbs or digits with it, I have never seen it run out of battery as I have always given up hedging before this thing does.
If I ramble, it's because I'm just more than a little smitten with this sweet f'ing hedger.
On to the use, first impression: I was tired and had to stop long before the battery was. Pretty sure it could have kept going a few more hours. And it cuts through everything with spectacular ease and speed, making hedging about as easy as it can possibly be. I tried it on a couple evergreen shrubs as well and results were fantastic there too. There wasn't one thing it got stuck on, including invasive trees.
I already had a couple batteries that would fit this bc I have the mower in the same line. If you don't have them and you're balking at the cost for those, don't. It's WORTH IT. The ease of movement alone! Absolutely sweet hedging. I am actually looking forward to doing more!
