Product Description
The inReach SE operates over the Iridium satellite network, providing truly global two-way satellite communications and high network reliability anywhere on Earth, with no gaps, fringe or weak signal areas. With the ability to maintain satellite signal lock even in difficult GPS environments, the inReach SE also offers global SOS capabilities, adjustable tracking intervals from 10 minutes to 4 hours, and remote real-time follow-me/find-me tracking and ping-me locating. In the event of an emergency, the interactive SOS capability of inReach automatically triggers remote tracking and allows users to describe and update their situation so proper resources can be deployed. With 90% of the world’s surface lacking mobile phone coverage, inReach SE is essential gear for the traveller or outdoor adventurer to keep them connected and safe anywhere in the world. The inReach range of devices are the only affordable satellite communication devices that can both send and receive text messages.

Coverage: This has been stated many times before but coverage is global. I have yet to use it outside of North America, but I have had no problems getting coverage even in very remote areas. I was skeptical that it would be reliable on the Salmon River in Idaho with such a deep canyon and limited view of the sky but sure enough it worked nearly every time. Messages would easily send within a minute or two, same with receiving. Occasionally messages would take up to 15 minutes to send but they would always go through. I had a similar result with the tracking feature. Data points would usually send every 10 minutes as specified but occasionally would wait another 10 minutes then catch up.
GUI/Earthmate: Using the SE as a stand alone device works quite well. My only complaint as a stand alone is the uber slow typing. Maybe we could see a better predicative text keyboard. Regardless I still became quite proficient at it and its hardly a complaint. I was very happy to use it as a stand alone and actually know what was going on vs the non screen model which leaves users clueless. Earthmate app is OK. I wish that it would mirror what the SE showed and allow you to force check messages, ect. I liked being able to leave the SE out in a good spot and sit in my tent and text on my phone. Maps with Earthmate is OK. Not as good as USGS topos but decent enough to get around. I wish the SE could share the GPS location with other apps on my phone. Personally I prefer Backcountry Navigator for maps.
Durability: I am pleased to say that the SE had no issues hanging out in my life jacket for a week. It went through rapids and a couple swims. No problems with water or durability thus far. I fear I may break the USB cover but I am careful and so far so good.
Problems: I had one minor problem with the SE being paired to my smart phone and requiring a reboot of both devices. I was hiking and navigating on my phone and it failed to update my location no matter what I did. I had to manually stop the tracking and reboot both devices. Worked fine after that though. I have had a couple occasions where messages and tracking could not send due to limited view of the sky. This is hardly a complaint because the device requires a decent view of the sky. Mostly what I found is that large tall old growth trees would limit the performance. On the other hand I can use it just fine indoors at my work. Go figure :)
Billing/Website: I haven't had any issues changing my plan or getting charged crazy amounts. It is worth noting that the taxes on the device are more than I expected but not an issue with DeLorme, its a federal tax. You MUST update the inReach via sync (either USB or OTA) when you change the billing. I've read other reviews that claim this isn't clear but to me its very clear on the website. I still think the device is expensive to subscribe too but with the freedom plans and ability to suspend the device it helps a lot.
Battery: I could get 2-3 days with 10 minute tracking enable and the device turned off at night. I also had no issues charging it with a Goal Zero Nomad 7 solar panel and Goal Zero Guide 10 Plus.
InReach enables sharing your trip on social media in real time, as well as communicating with friends or rescue personnel via text from even remote locations (with a view of the sky). I set mine up, following the manual, to post texts to a Facebook page, and to send email or texts to a small group of friends. Don't forget to set up your map page at share.delorme.com; this let's your friends follow your trip on a map with location updates at regular intervals (e.g. 20 miinutes, settable). Getting all this to work took some time, although I did not have any problems. With some additional effort you can also set up DeLorme's Earthmate software on your iPhone (I did), and configure your iPhone to be the texting interface to the InReach Explorer. Do this! The texting interface via iPhone is far superior to texting on the Explorer directly, and is a big part of why this is a five-star review.
I initially used the Explorer at my house, setting it against the light-fixture on a light post at the end of the driveway. It needs a clear view of the sky for satellite communication. I tried out the various texting options, to Facebook, to email addresses, and to SMS cellphone recipients. The SMS stuff had some significant lag in my early trials, and I can't explain why. Subsequent trials generally take less than 30 minutes for a two-way (back and forth once each) text exchange. It is NOT near real-time like SMS messaging on a cell phone network, and that is as expected.
The longest trip I completed with the Explorer so far is an 85 mile over-water trip from Seattle to the San Juan Islands. I was impressed with the detailed view of the trip shown on the shared map page; you could see where we altered course to avoid large shipping traffic. Texting to the Facebook page and a couple of friends all worked flawlessly. The device spent the trip on the flying bridge, held upright in a cup holder, so it had a clear sky view for the entire 8 hour trip.
I've texted directly with the InReach Explorer, and that is passably useable, and a key feature in any such device. The ease of use improves dramatically using an iPhone running Earthmate and connected to the InReach Explorer. The app allows you to manage the Explorer, including adjusting tracking, waypoints, messages, and shows your location on a map.
For portions of the trip to Alaska the only communication available will be satellite communication. The InReach Explorer offers an affordable way to communicate by text from anywhere in the world. I opted for a mid-priced monthly plan that I plan to use for only three or four months this year, and at $36/month plus the $25 annual service fee I will spend a lot less than a satellite phone would cost. What I will get is a way to summon an emergency rescue in remote areas, a way to share a boat trip on Facebook in near real time, and the ability to text friends (two-way) during the trip. I hope to update this review after my InReach Explorer gets some true wilderness use.
