The lathe turns like a dream, is very quiet, and has plenty of power for the size projects you'll be able to turn on it. So far I've turned a few pens, salt and pepper shakers, a couple of bowls and a kaleidoscope. It's handled everything like a champ. The tailstock moves smoothly and you can take it on and off with minimal fuss. As an amateur woodturner, I've been very pleased.
I bought a WEN but it was an out of box failure so I extended my search and came up with the comet nove2.
this is a nice machine. I like the 12 inch swing. I don't much care about the length of the bedways, I don't make baseball bats.
my record power lathe has only an 8 inch swing but a 48 inch bed. the head stock turns outboard so I can turn a large bowl up to 30 inches...but not accurate enough to make pens.
the comet is accurate, meaning the spur in the headstock and the live center in the tail stock come together perfectly. it runs quiet and has plenty of power.
I especially like the fact that is will turn in reverse, making sanding much easier. (you will need the reversible chuck for that feature.)
all in all, I am glad I bought this lathe. I just wish we weren't in the middle of a polar vortex because I would really like to get out there and make some shavin's...as capt eddie would say.
Zero vibration without being bolted down. No tools needed for belt changes. Live centers. Perfect alignment. Quiet. Loads of available accessories. The variable speed works like a charm. Larger clearance than most comparable models.
I've been using it almost every day for months and it performs perfectly. Can't ask for anything else.
Some updates 08/18/2014
I have still not heard from Nova tech support, but here is what I have figured out:
1. The noise was due to the set screw being loose in pulley #2 of the headstock. Tightening that made the noise go away. So, headstock bearings are fine.
The following will result in vibration that will ruin your project and drive you nuts!
1. The bolt that secures the motor to the lathe body should not be loose.
2. The screws that hold the motor to the belt changing mechanism which lifts or drops the motor should not be loose.
3 Pulley alignment is very important and the tolerance here is probably about 2mm.
4. DAMHIKT
Finally an opinion :. Warranty duration doesn't mean anything if service is non existent..i just gave up trying to contact anyone at Teknatool...Would I buy this lathe again? Probably yes, because now I know the machine and, for the money, I don't think there is anything better out there.
