Product Description
Almost an ounce lighter than its predecessor and built with Nikon ED (extra-low dispersion) glass lenses, the new MONARCH 5 is a serious contender to be the "go-to" binocular for any outdoor enthusiast. The MONARCH 5 delivers sharp, high-contrast views that are the result of a state-of-the-art optical system. Featuring Nikon's premium ED Glass lenses and Dielectric High-Reflective Multilayer Prism Coatings, the MONARCH 5 displays exceptionally accurate color reproduction and a clear, natural looking image. Each of its Eco-Glass lenses are Fully Multicoated to provide maximum resolution and light transmission. The MONARCH 5 binocular comes in black finish and is available in 8x42, 10x42 and 12x42 magnifications. It utilizes Nikon's high-eye point design to provide a clear field-of-view and long eye-relief. The long eye-relief ensures a sufficient space between the user's face and the binoculars' eyecups to make them comfortable for everyone, even for those wearing eyeglasses. The turn-and-slide rubber eyecups make it easy to find the right eye positioning for extended periods of use. The MONARCH 5 also utilizes a smooth central focus knob that makes it easy to bring object into focus for fast viewing. Built for extreme usage, the MONARCH 5 is Nitrogen filled and O-ring sealed, making it completely waterproof and fog proof. A protective, rubber-armored coating strengthens its durability and ensures a non-slip grip during wet and dry conditions.

You really begin to appreciate the advances in optical technology if you read about roof prisms on the web. The principle sounds absurd at first - light reflects off a corner in a piece of glass, so that parts of the beam travel different distances through glass and accrue a phase shift degrading the image. But they managed to compensate for this by adding a second prism and applying special coatings to the prism surfaces to delay the beams and bring them back in phase. The result is a product that is remarkably compact and lightweight, so it's no surprise that roof prism designs are the most popular. If you are looking for a pair, I highly recommend you get one with this type of prism instead of the old style (Porro prism) design.
While at Cabela's I was able to look through many pairs of binoculars that I had been considering and comparing to these. The first on the list was the Leupold Cascades, roof prism 10x42. Inside the store the Nikon was slightly better, at about $10 more than the Cascades. Luckily they were on sale so I picked them up at $50 off at $279. They also had a clearer image than the Vortex Diamondback and the Ziess Terra that were listed at nearly $450. Of course the Conquest's were amazing but well over $1000 which was out of my price range at the time. Everyone that I know that owns and uses Nikon binos from the Prostaff's to Monarchs are very satisfied, and after a pretty grueling elk hunt this year, being able to put them through their paces, so am I. The optical quality is more than satisfactory and I was able to easily and clearly glass several thousands of yards away, at mountainsides where I was hunting. I like the quickness and sensitivity of the focus and the field of view is very adequate. Even well past legal light I was able to continue glassing at long distances with clarity. The only things that I am less than impressed with is the case, which is pretty typical quality and I wish they made objective lens caps that were hard plastic with push buttons like those on canon camera lenses, vs the rubber ones that you have to work into place. But this is all good because I will end up getting rid of all this and buying a nice protective case and just use the binoculars as a stand alone unit, along with a professional grade lens cleaning pen. I would recommend these to anyone wanting a high quality hunting, workhorse binocular with great optical clarity that doesn't totally break the bank.

It was love at first sight!
The case is well padded but the cover is not quite covering the binoculars.
As it would not protect the binoculars if it started to rain, I bought a better case made by Steiner, Germany.
Happy Trails! :)
