The only complaint I can make about this mouse is that when I run my CAD program (DesignSpark). using the scroll function to zoom in and out is clumsy. Since there are no detents on the scroll, I have trouble zooming in or out a single "click" at a time. Of course, the mouse is intended as a travel mouse, and running a CAD program on an 11" screen is pretty restrictive anyway, so I can't count this as a real negative.
The price does seem to vary, though. I bought mine from Amazon three weeks ago for $37, It now seems to run from $42 to $60. So far as I can tell, the Surface edition is identical to the non-surface edition. The Amazon images for both show the silver sides. I had understood that the only difference between the two was the color of the sides. In fact while I ordered the Surface edition with the silver-sided image, what I got is a Surface Edition (according to the box) with black sides. This makes absolutely no difference to me, but if you're looking to get the silver sides, make very sure with the seller exactly what you're buying. And probably expect to pay more.
As an aside, I connected this to one of my WinXP desktops, and it worked fine, including the ballistic scrolling. But it's not a particularly good substitute for a good desk mouse... it really is too small to be easily precise. It's intended for a netbook/tablet/mini-laptop with limited USB ports that gets carried around in a bag. For that, for me, it's great.
The weight is entirely from the single AA battery, inserted in the wide end of the mouse. Essentially, you're holding a double-A battery between your thumb & pinky, with the rest of the mouse so light, its as if its weightless. Technically, it connects fast and flawlessly. The power save function works great, and I appreciate that I don't have to plug this mouse into anything to charge it - I can use any AA battery, including my rechargeables .
What I like about the wedge mouse is that it is super small, but still pretty accurate and responsive, and has 4 way scrolling. I will say however that I couldn't get 4 way scrolling to work in InDesign cs5 on the stream 7 for some reason.
The mouse is obviously super tiny but it's battery life seems great, which is one thing I was worried about since all my bigger mice use 2 double A's at least.
The thing I dislike most about this mouse is that it is hard to use on soft surfaces. For instance, in the office I worked at, there was very little space, so sometimes I had to work on the couch. While the tiny mouse was great because it fit next to me on the couch cushion with room to move, the way it's designed it clicks by pressing the whole thing down and sometimes it was harder to actually get it to click on the couch. Not a huge deal though!
It is true that this is not a comfortable mouse to use for a long time, and I can report that when I did once have to use it for an hour or two of layout work in indesign, my hand did get really uncomfortable. But for light work on a tablet as a backup/travel mouse to throw in a bag just in case, it's perfect. Most of the things I do on my tablet don't require a mouse, so having one that can get the job done and not take up much space is great.
Of course, what I'm saying is, this is a mouse that is great if you don't intend to use it a ton, and with that in mind, the price is definitely too high. I got mine refurbed for very cheap and it was worth it, but I would consider something like Microsoft's designer Bluetooth mouse or the older sculpt touch mouse (which will also do 4 way scrolling) if you can't find one of these at a significant discount.
