Speaker quality - best of the 4 headsets I curently have (a motorola, a rocketfish, another Plantronics, and a Samsung). I think it's better than a couple I no longer have, but obviously can't compare directly to those - they're gone. It is plenty loud, sound is crisp and precise, and it isolates background noise well by the way it fits in ear.
Mic is great too. I've compared this head-to-head to the other headsets I have and callers say this one is louder and clearer with less background noise. That includes 2 headsets that, like this one, have noise canceling. One of those cost more, one about the same. So, yes, noise canceling on this one is good- I tried it with the driver window down at 55mph and the person I was talking to could hear me fine. As long as the noise is constant, like wind, or driving noise, it works well. It does pretty well in a crowded place, like an airport with lots of people in the background. If it's intermittent noise like clanking machines, an announcement at the airport, or such, it's just okay, but it takes really, really good (and expensive) tech to do well at knocking out that type of noise and again, I consider this a budget, not a premier headset.
I got this b/c I wanted a headset without an ear loop. This one does that and fits comfortably and for a prolonged period (up to couple hours is as much as I've gone). It holds well, doesn't' fall out, and is smaller to keep in my pocket than with the earhook. The little rubber-ish piece that holds it in the ear rotates, so you can position it at any angle, in either ear.
Design is very nice - volume button is easy to operate with a nice tactile click but not to hard to push. I love the sliding on-off switch - it does not get accidentally engaged in my pocket and drain my battery like a couple others I've had. I think the shape and size is nice - clean lines, not gaudy, small enough, very functional look and feel.
Battery life is good. Unlike a couple headsets I have, it gives a warning far enough in advance and then repeat warnings as charge dwindles so I can charge it between calls. I don't do really long calls though - usually max of 1 hr for conference calls, most calls short, like < 20min +/-. I have pushed it 30-40 min past the "battery low!" voice-warning several times and it's made that. The voice that tells you how much talk time you have when you power it on is roughly close but not right on, so you can plan charging. Seems like it charges in just a couple hours, but I've never timed it ... ti usually makes it through the day and i chage overnight.
It's been quite durable. It's taken a lot of drops and made it through the wash a couple times ... but it just went through the wash again, and I think the poor little guy finally died :( May he rest in peace. That is why I haven't ever bought expensive BT headsets - they are just too easy to lose, break, or leave in a pocket. After having this one for just short of 3 years, I can't see why I would want to spend more - this one exceeded my expectations by a LONG, LONG way.
Why I chose this one:
I required "over ear" design (rather than "in ear").
I required SIri interaction.
I required access to audio files (e.g., my music) = A2DP.
I need high volume (at times).
I needed long life on a charge.
I needed light-weight for all day wear.
I needed some noise cancellation ability.
This has all of the above.
First twenty-four hours:
Out of the box:
* Switched it on and placed it to my (unusually small) ear WITHOUT the supplied, but optional, hook. Extremely light, stays in place, forget I am wearing it.
* The pairing to my iPad Mini (cellular) was fast and easy -- and the device itself walks you through the simple, first-use, task.
* I ran it through its paces-- insuring it met all my needs as mentioned above. It did.
* It was mostly charged when it arrived, but charged it to full in a few minutes.
Next morning:
* Went out the door, switched it on with my iPad on the seat beside me, and the M165 announced it was connected.
* I drive... a lot. I use the Waze (navigation) app. I absolutely had to be able to hear Waze announcements. I do. Motor noise is too loud to hear it from my iPad speakers with the iPad on the dash. This is great.
* I wanted to be able to tell that Waze app of traffic and hazard conditions. I could not.
UPDATE: I can, but a commercial vehicle's motor noise makes that "iffy" at best (however, Siri heard me just fine). In my private car, it works perfectly.
* Got to one destination and left my iPad in the vehicle while I ran a short errand into the office. The M165 surprised me by telling me it lost the connection. I had forgotten I was wearing it, and I was well over fifty feet away when it made that announcement. As I returned, I was still over forty feet away when it announced it had reconnected. Impressive.
I tasked Siri off and on throughout the day, and listened to my music through the M165 most of the day, so realized that this was a lifestyle change-- I can have my music all the time while at work!
Nothing will replace my stereo ear-pods, but when I need to be able to hear beyond the music (which is most of the work day), the M165 is my friend.
After an eight hour day, the device stated it still had about two hours left despite that I had used it almost constantly for something close to six hours.
Pros:
It interacts with Siri.
It plays my music for hours and hours!
It never fell out of my ear-- even without the hook.
I forgot I was wearing it whenever it was silent.
My ear was not the least bit sore from all day wear.
I can hear conversations, sirens, and such while listening to it.
The battery lasted as long as I needed it to-- enabling me to spoil myself with music. (Have I mentioned I like music?)
The max volume is more than sufficient for my scarred ear-drums.
The connection distance is substantially more than advertized.
Cons:
* My (bass) voice sounds "tinny" when tested using the free Plantronics "MyHeadset" app, but is clear (I have not tried FaceTime or Skype, yet).
* While I can hear Waze app announcements, I cannot make Waze app reports by voice command...
(UPDATE: ...if in a loud commercial vehicle-- works fine in private car).
* It seems (my early diagnosis) that when my iPad is dropping connection to a WiFi source, or reconnecting, the M165 is briefly interrupted. This is likely an issue with the iPad, and not the M165.
* I got caught and teased for walking across campus singing along with a favorite song no one else could hear-- that might actually be a PRO because I sometimes sing well.
UPDATE: On the forth day of use, the volume control stopped functioning. I was already spoiled and so am now waiting on the replacement. I learned a friend has the exact model, and has had no problems in over a year of use, so from that and other reviews, I consider my experience a fluke. Boxing up my new favorite addition to my iPad and saying Goodbye was... well... I don't want to talk about it.) :-)
