Customers are mixed about the signal quality of the router. Some mention that it has high bandwidth and range, while others say that the signal isn't very strong and the coverage area is nowhere near the signal strength of the RT-AC68U. The internal antenna seems to be the reason for the poor range, as some customers say it's hit or miss with Internet.
"...The wireless signal is strong and steady with great range...." Read more
"...which is exactly what I wanted - not the fastest unit you'll find, no 5GHz band (only 2.4 GHz), no USB in/out, etc...." Read more

"...Stable and very consistent with signal strength and quality. No hiccups or any lag...." Read more
Customers are mixed about the speed of the networking router. Some mention that the throughput speeds it is able to maintain show very little loss, the WiFi on it is fast, and the ASUS interface is very speedy and intuitive. However, others say that the 10/100 is noticeably slower than Gigabit, the speed is cut in half, and WiFi was unstable and slowed down to crawl. It's single band 2.4 Ghz, so file throughput is limited, and downloading files takes some time.
"...There is no noticeable loss or gain in speed. (Hardline vs. wireless.) Stable and very consistent with signal strength and quality...." Read more
"...It is very basic, which is exactly what I wanted - not the fastest unit you'll find, no 5GHz band (only 2.4 GHz), no USB in/out, etc...." Read more

Customers are mixed about the configuration of the router. Some mention that it has the ability to configure guest networks, has plenty of configuration settings, and can set-up three separate guest networks. However, others say that it's not capable of very many advanced configurations, and that it forgets its configuration.
"...(optional) admin features a geek prefers, including the ability to configure guest networks. Excellent docs online...." Read more

I was very impressed when I saw that Asus had one of their representatives answering customer's concerns about their products on Amazon's review boards. That's good PR and good customer service as far as I'm concerned. I highly recommend this router to anyone who wants a quality product for a very reasonable price.
I've always found ASUS product to be of very high quality.

Two tips - The manual does not quite match the currently shipping product; outer/ap/bridge is set in software now and a few other minor issues. No big deal.
One potential "gotcha" is worth noting. I had tried replacing the Comcast gateway with a modem and this router. That particular modem would not connect with Comcast, so I used this router with the modem function of the Comcast gateway until I could order a different modem. Worked fine.
Installed new modem this morning and router worked OK -- briefly. It then warned "Your ISP's DHCP does not function properly," which has many discussions on the web -- but not for this specific model modem. When Comcast did the online approval of the modem activation, it warned that they could be doing config for some time. What was strange was that I could access the net from the modem Ethernet port, but the router was still unhappy about the ISP's DHCP.
Don't panic. Give Comcast a good hour to do their thing and then reset the modem. My IP address had changed in the lower 16 bits and the router was now happy with ISP DHCP and routing fine. (You might need to run the quick setup again.)
Another suggestion from the net was to change the router's DHCP query frequency from aggressive to normal.
On AP mode the router has been stable, it has over a month of uptime, with no issues or disconnections that I could detect. I am using this on an original Ring video doorbell. This AP always provides the speed required by the doorbell, which seems to be fixed to 1Mbps by Ring, not the WiFi. The doorbell reports -59dBm of RSSI and the AP reports -67dBm. They are about 15 meters apart. The AP is on a second story, a meter away from the window. The window has iron bars. 15 meters away, at ground level, is a concrete column where the Ring doorbell is installed. This columns has a couple of iron bars through it. The Ring doorbell is placed in such a way that the column is right between the AP and the Ring.
The device has access to a telnet console, with Linux, it also has a good enough system log and a log of the clients connected to the AP.
I am quite satisfied with the stock firmware. It is not as customizable as DD-WRT but it works well.
Roaming assistant does not work, though. Roaming assistant is supposed to kick out devices (clients) with poor signal. The idea is that after they get kicked out they will connect to a WiFi access point with better signal. That way, this AP is not loaded unnecessarily and the clients get a better connection.
In my tests the Realtek WiFi card I was using was not kicked. I still wonder who is at fault, so I will not remove any stars from the product for this particular reason.
One thing about the guest network: it is supposedly isolated from the home network, only giving you access to the internet, not the home LAN. In AP mode the guest network doesn’t work this way: clients connected to the guest network can see devices in the home network, in my case including UPnP, SMB shares and all kinds of broadcasts. I suppose this feature only works in the “wireless router” mode.
The physical construction is nice, nice texture too. The front/top of the device is textured and a little bit translucent... this makes the light from LEDs leak all around the case and you can sometimes see what’s inside the router. That’s not very professional, but I don’t care too much because the device is not on my sight normally.
