A smaller Tonka. Strong build, even though there are plastic parts. We’ve had this almost a year. My four year old son uses it daily in his construction business. It’s been through the ringer!!!! No signs of wear and tear!!!

This review may be a little unfair, as I am comparing this truck to my memory of a much-desired 1965 Tonka tow truck, which I wanted but never got, because my cheap parents always bought the "just as good" cheap piece of junk. Okay, I realize that's an issue for my therapist, so back to the review. Short review version: This is why yard sales are so popular. On the plus side, the truck does have some metal. It does feel sturdy compared to the current crop of plastic ones. However, plastic cheapness, in terms of appearance and structure, has clearly invaded over the years, like a pervasive weed. Large expanses of plastic have taken over formerly metal parts. I'm not a big fan of the semi-monster truck type tires, but I could live with them. The problem is, they are plastic (not rubber) and look very cheap (i.e. clearly visible seams. Same for the wheels. The tow arm and skid/hook are also cheap looking and plastic. On a matter of less important (and, in my view, actually a plus), mine does not have a sunroof. And why would a tow truck have one??? Overall, I would be more inclined to rate this 2 stars. But, given the competition, I'll add another star for at least making a half-hearted effort to resemble a "classic" toy. Fortunately, the likely recipient of this toy is not going to have the former glory of Tonka to compare this to. In that regard, I would recommend it as better than the average current crop. But, if I had ever gotten the real Tonka, I would have much preferred to give that one to my grandson (and not because I am too cheap to buy a new one). Now, if you will excuse me, I am off to see my therapist.

My son is almost three years old and has given this tow truck a workout! It has held up and looks like it will hold up for years to come. He loves it.

This medium-sized Tonka tow truck is made of plastic and steel. (I think only the cab is steel and the rest of the truck is plastic). It has four "slots" that allow the tow bar to be set at four different heights. In the picture, you can see the yellow round ball with which you select the desired height. On the lowest setting, the tow bar is about 2 inches from the ground. On the highest setting, the tow bar is about 5 inches from the ground. So, for the Tonka Retro to pull a vehicle, a toy should have a bumper that is, at least, about 2 inches from the ground. It is not designed to pull small vehicles. When he opened it, it brought a big smile to his face. He is busy playing with it right now.

Thought it was to be retro. To me that word means made like they used to be out of more metal than plastic. Too much $ for not a sturdy truck.

This truck has taken a beating, many baths, sandbox, all types of play and still going strong! My baby loves tow trucks so this was a perfect idea. I like the steel on the toy, too. Thank you!

I was expecting a heavy duty truck and this was not it. When you have steel in the description then there should be a decent amount of steel in the product. However I was hard pressed to first identify what part was made of steel (apparently the cab is made of a very thin, cheap steal), and second when the steel is so weak and lightweight that you can easily confuse it for plastic....not a good buy. Save your money and just buy the plastic version since this is not the throwback steel Tonka trucks of our youth and not worth the difference in price.
