The plastic versus the metal grinder
I really love this pepper grinder. However the first one I bought lasted 4 years. The second a little over 3 years. This last one I bought lasted only two years. Maybe that’s why they make another grinder that seems to be a metal grinder. I have to say I am an avid cook and use the pepper grinder eight times or more a day. But I’m a little let down by the quality. I guess I’ll give the other pepper grinder with the metal grinder a try. Otherwise the use the ease as well as the quality of grind is amazing. Hopefully the new grinder will stand the test of time.

I replaced a 10 year old broken pepper mill with this OXO Pepper Grinder. I researched for several weeks before I finally decided on this one. For the price and quality, this one stood out. I was worried because I didn't think it would be big enough for our pepper loving family. I thought I'd have to refill it every week, but not the case. My family has been using this for the past 3 weeks and have only used 1/4 of the peppercorns. I use the pepper grinder to cook with daily and at the table for a family of 4, so it gets heavy usage. I like how the pepper comes out of the top, so my counter doesn't get pepper all over it. I really like how easy it is to adjust pepper size. Sometimes I like a course grind and other times a fine grind, it depends on the food. The grip is wonderful especially while cooking and much easier to turn than my old pepper mill, especially important as I am aging with arthritis. Another thing I like is being able to see exactly how much remains. Nothing is worse than preparing a meal, and you run out. Who wants to stop what they are doing right at that moment. I have unscrewed the bottom where the peppercorns go in and it will be very easy and quick to fill back up. I have started buying OXO brand of kitchen utensils and I haven't been disappointed at all. The company makes great products! So far, I am very happy with this pepper grinder!

Like another reviewer mentioned, the cheap McCormick one's in the stores work better. This worked really good for a while but now the cheap plastic size adjustment is all jammed up and it won't even stay on the small setting. Also even the medium small size it seems to want to stay on shoots out big flat pieces of pepper. Wish I could send it back but I've had it too long. Wouldn't even gripe if the price for this thing wasn't so high :(

I first gave this a great review. Then recently it started working bad. I had to shake it and bump it on the counter to get it working and then it got kind of jammed up and wouldn't go on the smallest setting putting out big flat flakes. After a couple of days of that I wiggled the setting thing a few time back and forth and this thing is working like new now. I purchased it in 2018 so I had to come back and update my review. Can't complain even if it croaked on me right now., Didn't realize I've had it that long

This is a nice option if you prefer utility over fancifulness when it comes to grinding your fresh black pepper; though, I think it has a nice simple look. Significantly high return on investment over disposable grinders, especially when buying inexpensive refills (see recommendation below).

It is easy to use, just flip over and turn; and has nice and accurate chip sizing and flow. I've been using this continuously for about 2 years and I still have no complaints. I can't think of how it could be any better. It works incredibly well and is dependable, high quality.

I do a lot of cooking! This is the best manual pepper grinder I ever used. Easy on the wrists and I love that the device grinds from the bottom, NOT the top of the neck like so many others. Great design. And there's no grinder handle to break. The coarse grind adjustment goes from fine to very coarse quickly and easily. There is no binding of the grinder and it's easy to refill.
EDIT: March 2021. I've had this grinder for 5 years, using it constantly every day and it works as well now as it did when it was new. Because I needed to buy another, of many packages of pepper corns, I decided to give this an update. I like a manual grinder because it's easier to grind smaller amounts of pepper onto smaller food portions, like on a fried egg, and no batteries. It's still the best manual grinder I've ever used. I found it easy to adjust the grind size and easy to refill, although the screw-on cap can be a bit tricky to screw back on. I still think it's best feature is that it grinds from the bottom while being able to hold the larger top with your hand. So many other grinders must have their smaller top held tight with just a few fingers while turning the grinder bottom, which makes it difficult if you have large hands.

Very disappointing. It worked fine to prepare one meal, but broke during second meal preparation. Since I only cook for two people, the grinder wasn't subjected to any unusual stress. I really like Oxo products, but this one should be taken off the market until Oxo substantially redesigns the grinder parts.

Update: I went to the OXO.com web site and used the contact us link to open an e-mail option to report an issue with a product. (I think the "contact us" link at the bottom of the web page isn't obvious to most users, but I often hack around to find what I need. A user experience [UX] developer could improve that.) After providing pictures, OXO is a courtesy preplacement.
In the meantime, I was able to super glue broken ceramic pieces to a central metal sleeve and a plastic top ( I couldn't simply glue the ceramic pieces together.) The combined assembly provided a fairly even grind at the finest setting and an inconsistent grind at the coarsest setting.
Upon reflection, I think the ceramic piece broke when I unthinkingly twisted in grinder handle in a partial counterclockwise turn while adding pepper during a meal preparation as described earlier. Upon resuming clockwise turns, the grinder jammed as though a peppercorn is in the way and has happened with other pepper grinders I've owned. The ceramic piece broke with a slightly harder clockwise twist.

I had a set and my husband decided to load the peppercorns and I turned around to look at what he was doing he had broke it…not sure why he was twisting it… this brand has never given me any issues and have had for 7 years. I selected this primarily for the adjustable grind and it did not disappoint. It is difficult to find a grinder that gives good chunky pepper but this one is excellent.
