Why should I invest in a canister vacuum?
Canister vacuums are generally lighter and more maneuverable than uprights. They are great for vacuuming under low tables and furniture. The compact design makes them easy to store and to carry on stairs. Many canister vacuums have tools and attachments that clean almost any surface.
What makes it safe for hard floors?
It has nonmarking wheels made of rubber and felt. The brush has softer bristles that are not as tough on hard floors as a typical vacuum brush.

The design of the vacuum cleaner is fantastic. It's very easy to adjust the suction level using buttons on the handle and to turn the vacuum off/on from the handle. There are also 5 blue lights that clearly indicate what level of suction you are currently using. Other nice features are that the cord can retract automatically and that the handle can easily be stored upright using a small hook on the handle/canister. In addition, the canister is lightweight and is easy to move from room to room (by rolling or carrying). Finally, it is easy to see when the dirt canister is full and it's even easier to empty/clean it out.
fyi, it wasn't clear from the description when I bought the vacuum, but it DOES have an extra attachment for rugs. Since it's advertised more as a hardwood floor cleaner, I wanted to note that mine came with a rug attachment.
Overall, I am really pleased with this canister vacuum cleaner and am glad that I found it on Amazon!
First and foremost, IT WORKS. If you have hardwood floors, this machine will clean them. The vacuum-driven brushes do a great job of removing dust right into the woodgrain and cracks, and there's ample vacuum to pick up all debris in one pass. You will NOT find yourself scrubbing back and forth trying to get the floor clean. It's remarkably quiet; you hear the whoosh in the hose and the whir of the brushes, but the base unit is almost drowned out by those sounds.
The remote in the handle is also a great feature. You can turn the unit on and off with a touch of your thumb or adjust the power from 1 to 5. I at first wondered why I'd want to vary the vacuum. Isn't moooore poweeer every guy's creed? Well that was before I saw what a thorough job it did even on 3. The telescoping wand is intuitively designed so that you find you change the length (i.e. for window sills and wainscoting) without even thinking about it.
The dirt receptacle is another home run - simply lift it out of the base unit, carry it out to the garbage can and release the latch on the trapdoor. Retracting power cords are a common feature these days, but this one is particularly functional.
While the unit is designed to roll along smoothly on its 6" main wheels, it's so light you can comfortably carry the power unit in one hand while vacuuming a large area. This is also handy on stairs.
Random observation: Using the handset with the detail brush you feel a little like one of the guys from Ghostbusters. You can decide whether that's a good thing.
As an aside, with the light weight and strong vacuum, this has replaced my shop vac as my go-to tool for cleaning my car. Never would have expected that.
If you have hardwood floors and are looking for the ideal tool for keeping them clean, this is it.
In terms of maneuverability, I find this vacuum fairly good. It rolls around easily, both on hardwood and carpeted surfaces, and I did not have any issues with it getting caught up or hooked on any cords that were laying around. It is also extremely lightweight, and has two handles (one hollowed out in the underside, and one on the top that lifts up around the power button) making it easy to lift and carry if needed.
On my hardwoods, I am very happy with how well it works. It did an excellent job of picking up, and the hardwood head is small enough that I could easily maneuver it around furniture. While the user manual states you can use the hardwood head on carpeted floors, I do not recommend it. Even on low pile carpeting, it was difficult to use, and did not do a very good job.
I did not try the carpet head on my hardwoods, so I cannot state how well that works. However, on low pile carpet it did a very good job. It doesn't roll the easiest, however it did not take much effort to use. I would not recommend it on thicker carpets however, which is why it will only be a back up to our uprights for the carpeted rooms.
In general, the vacuum seems very good. It does not appear that it will get beat up easily, as the plastic it is made from is quite sturdy. It is easy to assemble, and everything locks into place well. It is also easy to access the filters and to clean out. I was impressed with how much dust it actually picks up.
There is nowhere on the vacuum to store the second head when not in use, which isn't a huge deal. The attachment heads arrive on a bracket that you can clip on the remote by the handle. This is convenient, however I personally had an issue with bumping the bracket and knocking it loose. It never fell off, but I don't know if it's the best spot for it in general. The power and cord retract buttons require a little more force than I'm generally used to, but you don't have to beat them either. I will warn you when you hit the cord retract it retracts with authority. I would recommend holding the cord and helping feed it in since it gets a little aggressive.
My main gripe with the vacuum is the remote switches. I enjoy the convenience of being able to adjust the suction as well as turn the power off from the handle. However, I found when you turn the power back on at the handle, it lowers the suction to 3 bars. I was vacuuming on the maximum, and I was a little irritated that it did not return to the setting it was on when I powered it down. It's not a big deal, but I would have to keep reminding myself to increase the suction any time I powered it back on, which I did semi-frequently whenever I changed attachments.
All in all, for the price especially, this is a good choice if you have only hardwoods or smooth flooring. If you have carpet, I would make sure you have another vacuum that you use primarily in those areas. The cons I found with it are all minor enough that I find the pros heavily outweight them.
Top reviews from other countries
Update: the vacuum is worth well over $150 that the price suggests, its extremely quiet and smooth. Tons of suction power and will not scratch the laminate. The hardwood floor roller brush works exceedingly well picking up virtually everything and the carpet/hard floor nozel works surprisingly well on the thick area rugs and excellent on the low pile ones. Its easy to empty and the filters are easy to remove to clean...which is good since you will have to do this fairly often to maintain suction. The only con i can think of that it has a small dust bin which meas it will have to be emptied frequently. I would buy this same vacuum three times over for the price of one dyson before i would consider dyson. This machins makes the chore of vacuuming satisfying!
Pros:
Great suction on hardwood floors
Quiet
Light
Cons:
Requires regular cleaning of filters
Small canister
Short cord
So-so on rugs
The biggest issue is that the small canister fills up quickly. We have a long haired cat, and I usually have to empty the canister once while vacuuming our 1500 sq ft apartment. The cord is short, but I just use an extension. I also have to take out the filters and knock them outside every 3-4 vacuumings to keep them clean. If you don't do this suction will drop off dramatically. The spinning brush is not powered by a motor, just the suction, so if it gets hair wrapped around it it may stop spinning. It's easy to remove and untangle any hair from the brush, but I seem to spend a lot of time doing maintenance on this vacuum. When it's done properly the machine is very effective though. I'm not sure if these issues would be any better in a much more expensive vacuum. Generally this works for my needs, and I'm happy with my purchase.
The suction can be adjusted, which is awesome. I have one floor that if you use highest suction the floor itself lifts- so I need to reduce there. Otherwise, I have wood floors- it's great on them.
I have a dog and 2 cats- so lots of hair. I just empty the canister each time I use it, and if there is lots of debris, maybe once during use. It literally takes under a minute. It is a small canister compared to the large upright Dyson- but for the difference of several hundred dollars....I can empty it more often, thanks. It's easy to empty. Yes, it gets dirty....but what would you expect?? That's where the dirt goes....
The filter needs to be removed occasionally (say every 5 times it's used ) as fine hair and dust will get into it (I have yet to see a vacuum where it doesn't?) and I just bang it out. Once I rinsed it- that seemed to work well also.
It's light, which is great for shoulders that are getting older. My body doesn't hurt like it does after using the upright Dyson (sorry Dyson, it's heavy). Down side of that is sometimes it flips onto it's side- so I flip it back. NOT a big deal.
I'm a fan. Given the cost and how closely it works to the more expensive ones, I would definitely buy this again.
I will revisit this review if performance changes over time.
Love the different brush heads and adapters. The hardwood floor brush is my favourite. It’s light weight. Perfect for stairs. Suction is very powerful. I went with a Bissel because I also have the handheld vacuum which is super powerful and figured going with Bissel was a smart idea. Also love the option to control suction force with a click of a button at your fingertips. It’s on the handle. Just need to add 2 batteries which comes in the box. Also have the option to turn off vacuum without bending over. Noise wise, it’s pretty quiet.
With two dogs and a toddler I used vacuum everyday for a week and I couldn’t be happier. I love my Dyson but this vacuum for the price and quality is definitely a keeper!
I miss my old Dyson but couldn't afford a new one
Update! IT CAUGHT ON FIRE
and I've been dealing with THE WORST customer service at Bissel.
- they sent me a cheap replacement - when I complained - they said they'd give me a refund - then they said they couldn't give me a refund cause I got it from Amazon
Been waiting over a MONTH to get this sorted out - dozens of emails and calls - NIGHTMARE
