Customers are mixed about the ports of the multiport hub. Some mention that it has many ports, but only one is used for charging, that it feels solid and there are no loose ports like some of the cheaper knock-offs, and that the end single charging port works well. Others say that one of the ports is dead, and about a year and a half in, ports 9-13 started giving them issues. They can only use 4 ports and the dedicated charging port, and the weak point is that it only has one power button for all ports.

- The aluminum construction gives this thing some real heft. It feels like a very premium product and definitely won't break.
- The fast charging port is FAST! Its 2.1 amp capacity is over 4x the standard power delivery of regular USB 2.0 and over 2x the power delivery of regular USB 3.0, which means your smartphones and other high-powered USB devices will charge MUCH faster.
- Having 13 data ports means that you'll likely never need your PC's built-in USB ports, which is handy for people who have laptops that don't support docking stations. Just connect all of your devices to this thing so that you only have one USB cable connected to your laptop.
- The ports have just the right amount of insertion/removal friction. Some devices have USB ports that are either so tight that insertion and removal is more difficult than it should be (requiring one hand on the cable/device and another to hold the hub in place) or so loose that some devices don't stay reliably connected. This one feels just right.
- Anker made sure that there is enough of a gap between USB ports to accommodate devices such as oversize flash drives without blocking adjacent ports, which can be an issue on other devices that group USB ports too closely together.
- Having the ports pointed upward with the AC adapter cable on the back and the power button on the front is ingenious for a few reasons. First, it means that connecting/disconnecting peripherals only requires one hand, whereas hubs whose ports are on the front, back, or side often require you to use one hand to hold the hub in place while the other hand inserts/removes the cable/device. Additionally, the design of those other hubs means that having cables connected to them consumes more desk area, whereas this one only requires a bit more vertical clearance for attached cables, which typically isn't a constraint on a desk (unless you want to put this on a keyboard tray or something). And lastly, pointing them upward makes the hub "neutral" with respect to the origin of the cables/devices attached to it. For example, typically a person will want some USB ports pointing toward the rear of the desk to hide cables that run to the back (e.g. to a printer) and some ports pointing forward for convenience (e.g. for gamepads, temporary flash drive or smartphone connections, etc). On other hubs that place ports along an edge so that they can either face forward, backward, or to the side, you have to choose either a clean look with reduced convenience (all ports facing rearward), or increased convenience at the cost of having cables stupidly connected to the front just to hairpin back toward the rear of the desk (all ports facing forward), or a compromise that's not ideal for either scenario (all ports facing sideways). Of course some hubs place ports on TWO sides, but in that case you likely just end up wasting some ports on one or both sides. With this hub, you can simply connect cables that need to run toward the back to the uppermost ports, and keep the lowermost ports available for temporary connection convenience. And of course the AC adapter connector on this hub is placed along the back, where you'd want it to be anyway. On other hubs, the AC connector is either placed on the opposite edge of the hub from the USB ports on the assumption that you'll want the USB ports facing forward (in which case you now need cable clearance on your desk for TWO sides of the hub), or it's placed on the same side as the USB hub so that you can theoretically have all cables pointing the same direction (in which case you're back to either pointing everything rearward for a clean appearance or having your AC cable make a hairpin in order to have your USB ports facing forward.)
Some of the points above may sound minor, but they really add up to make you appreciate the fantastic design and build quality here. Before I got this thing, I thought that one USB hub was pretty much the same as the next one, but having had this for a while now, I realized how much seemingly small changes can improve the overall experience. The details really do matter, they really can make the difference between a great product and a typical product even when we're talking about a USB hub, and they all come together here to create a truly superior USB hub. Highly recommended.
Not Anker. It's built like it belongs on a battleship - heavy and solid, and as reliable as anything I've ever seen. Even the box it comes in is thoughtfully designed: they've obviously taken some cues from Apple in designing the packaging: everything is very neat and squared-away in the package, with a thin startup guide (really, how much instruction do you need to set up a USB hub?) and everything you need to get it connected and running. The power brick, by the way, is large, about the size of a medium-sized laptop brick. Not a problem, just a little surprising, at least to me.
The physical aspects are nice, but how does it perform with USB3.0 devices? I kind of half-expected the hub to have a problem enumerating the handful of USB3 devices I have - mostly hard drives, purchased over the past couple of years. After all, USB3.0 is a real dance of technology, and there are a host of things that can go wrong during the enumeration process. But popping open the System Information app on my MacBook, I see every one enumerated as USB3.0, 5Gb/sec. I do a lot of video capture and edit, and these perform as well as the internal SSD for this purpose (yes, I know it's not as fast as the SSD, but for doing video manipulation I don't see a difference.)
Now, instead of two hubs, one connected to each of the USB ports on the MBP, I occupy just one port with the other one free for the SuperDrive when I need it. Yes, the Anker is a little pricey for "just" a USB hub, but your time is worth something, too: buy this and don't look back.
Additional notes, July 2014: One thing you might want to consider is that, apparently, some USB3 devices can interfere with GPS reception. I'm a radio amateur and have my VHF radio close to my computer. The radio has a GPS built in to support APRS (a position reporting protocol). I noticed recently that my position was no longer appearing in the online APRS logs. When I unplug USB3 drives from the hub, the GPS works fine and the radio begins reporting position again. Plug the disk drives in again, and the signal from the GPS satellites diminishes dramatically and the radio loses location lock. I don't think it's a problem with the hub so I'm leaving the star rating where it is...just be aware that if GPS is mission critical to your application some USB3 devices may cause interference.
What do I like about this hub?
I like the fact that I don't have to switch cables when I need to use one of the attached idle devices. I like the fact that I have four spare USB ports to connect transportable devices like a flash drive. I like the fact that it's a powered hub with enough power to connect a USB 3.0 128 GB flash drive. I like the fact that I no longer have to connect that drive directly to my computer to get it to work. I like the fact that it's a made of aluminum and not plastic. I like the fact that I no longer have to find a power outlet to charge my iPad 4 because it has a charging port. Yeah, I know a few have complained about not being able to charge your iPad while it's connected to one of the USB ports. Well, if you sync it wirelessly, it doesn't really matter.
You know what, I just like this hub.
By the way, I mounted the hub to the wall behind my desk using two 3M medium picture hanging strips. They'll hold up to 12 lbs each. I know the hub doesn't weight that much but I didn't want it coming loose after all of the cables were attached. These strips are similar to velcro and are easily removed from the wall without damage.
Finally, this isn't the first Anker item that I've purchased. I have always been more than satisfied with the quality and reliability of their products. And, as you may have guessed by now, I highly recommend this hub.
Top reviews from other countries
As expected, my USB 3.0 hard drives work slightly slower compared to being plugged in directly to my ExpressCard/34 card, but the difference is really insignificant (e.g. sustained reads of about 96 MB/s instead of 98 MB/s when attached directly to my ExpressCard/34 card).
Pros:
1) charging port charges either my tablet or smartphone as expected,
2) on/off switch enables you to use this hub only when needed,
3) having 13 USB 3.0 ports is great.
Minor cons:
1) this hub can get quite warm,
2) as other people mentioned, the USB ports on the hub are a bit tight (maybe over time they'll wear in?),
3) every time I plug this hub in, I always hear eight sounds from Windows 7 announcing that devices have been connected.
Anyway, thus is a high-quality USB 3.0 hub at a great price.
