This lightweight but sturdy machine seems to hit the sweet spot of functionality and ease of use we needed. In our house, husband does the mowing and I'll try to go around with snips to get errant vines or usually I'm hand-pulling weeds. I really wanted something so I could actually contribute to lawn clean-up. But I also suffer from muscle weakness and nerve damage in my left hand and wrist, up to the elbow, so typically larger more powerful machines just leave me jiggled, shaken, and my arm useless for a couple days following. Not so with this tool!
The plastic guide wheel for edging mode is wonderful. I was able to plop that down on the sidewalk and use the existing marks in the concrete to slowly rock back and forth to get a year's worth of overgrown edges manageable. I also also able to get all the grasses growing up out of the driveway cracks. Switching back to trimming mode is super easy and could probably be done with one hand in a pinch. It also never felt like anything was going to come undone or go wildly flailing between modes.
I did go ahead and buy 3 extra spools of the prewound string which ended up being a good idea. Because I was concentrating on very thick grasses on edges, I went through 2.5 spools in about 3 hours. Usually I try to DIY everything so felt slightly guilty about not using bulk string or something and may look at that for future projects. But now I know about how much effort, time, and string would be involved if we didn't maintain the edges for a whole year.
Right after, my arms were a bit wobbly but nothing extreme. I'm also very tall (over 6 feet) and never felt any strain on my lower back or neck. Today my left arm is fully functional, just a bit sore, but nothing like what I had experienced with other tools in the past.
I am a fat little old single lady of 62. I have fibromyalgia and arthritis. I just moved back East 6 months ago and am dealing with a small row house back yard. It's green but has no grass to speak of, just very hardy, healthy weeds that pass for grass if you squint. Since this is a rental and I have already sunk enough of my own sheckels into paint and better tile floors in the kitchen and bathroom, I thought I could get away with a lightweight lithium battery powered string trimmer to keep the back yard tidy. As a house warming gift, a friend gave me Black & Decker Model No. LST136 40V MAX* Lithium High Performance String Trimmer with Power Command. Well, not to look a gift horse in the mouth, but that was an out and out piece of crap! The battery does not stay charged so when I rolled up my sleeves to go out and whack, the thing puttered out in 5 minutes. I would have to recharge the battery for 24 hours to get another 5 minutes of work out of this. Philadelphia has a lot of thunderstorms and sun showers in the summer and the weeds (and grass) thrive on the combo of heat and moisture.
Since I get sick of recharging my life in to keep it running-cell phone, Kindle, flash light, tea kettle, Clairsonic - I opted for something that just plugs and plays. This baby is IT!
Based a lot on Miansa's great review of this product, I pressed the 'buy' button. I just got this yesterday, assembled it today (basically attached the handle and the guard) in under 5 minutes with a tiny Phillips head screw driver (and me half blind) and did a combo Mad Max/Born to Be Wild number out in the back yard. This trimmer takes NO prisoners! It has power and guts. My back yard looks better than the ones on either side of me-and they have real, heavy duty lawn mowers. This is light, my arms and wrists were not sore when I was finished and I felt like a young cowgirl while I was out there obliterating ankle high weeds posing as lawn.
Do yourself a favor. Buy this. It will not disappoint!

Last week I finally got around to setting trying it out on fairly heavily overgrown walkways.
SET UP
The weed whacker is well packed in a small box for shipping. Assembly requires attaching the lower guard (with a single screw), and attaching the handle (no tool required for the handle). The unit has a rotating collar which can be backed off to allow the telescoping stick to be extended/retracted. I’m 6’1” and find the most extended position just a little shorter than ideal. There is a power cord retention loop that works well to prevent you from accidentally pulling the power cord out of the back of the trimmer.
TRIMMER
When used as a trimmer, this performs exactly the same as any other electric weed whacker I’ve used. Noise, feedback, and comfort are essentially the same.
EDGER
This (and many of the more expensive B&D models) can also be used as an edger when flipped onto its back. There is a wheel on the back of the trimmer head which allows you to maintain the proper distance from the ground while edging. The handle is easily adjustable without tools and should be adjusted when switching from “weed whacker” to “edger” mode. The edger works extremely well for grass, but is a little less effective when dense, thick weeds have taken hold.
AUTO-FEED SPOOL
The auto-feed trimming wire feature works very well, and is completely seamless to the operation. This can be a very bad thing though, because you don’t notice that you are losing/breaking the line. The first time I used the unit, I burned through an entire spool (30 feet!) without noticing I was breaking the line. B&D’s proprietary auto-feed line (AF-100) costs about $5 per spool for 30’ line if bought in 3-packs (.
OVERALL
This is a great low-cost trimmer that brings edger capability to the table. Although I wish I’d bought the 20V wireless version of this trimmer, I am very happy with what I bought, especially for the price!

The trimmer for making an edging along the walkway was a little hard on the back,,, only because they all tend to be. It would be great to just walk along and easily make an edge without holding the unit at a particular angle. It does it as well as to be expected though. Nothing good or bad there.
I have never liked having to re-roll trimmer line to just get it on the trimmer. Need one that does it for you obviously.
Still, I say it was a good purchase for the money and the usability. I like it. I would still like it had it not been stolen, so I guess someone else liked it too. Two thumbs up for this one. It is was it says it is, and it does what it says it does. :)
It's well made and easy to use. I like the wheel at the front. I especially like the auto-advance feature of the string. The cartridgers are on the pricey side but very convenient. I've stringed my own as well but I've gone back to the cartridges in the name of convenience. Besides, unless you're using it to trim along hard surfaces, it lasts plenty long.
