It was very hard for me to reconcile the low price of this unit with the glowing reviews, but even adding $10 for a Thunderbolt to HDMI cable, we were still well under a quarter of the price, so I figured it was worth a try - guessing there was a about a 50% chance I would send it right back. That's definitely not going to happen.
I use a Thunderbolt at work, so I can directly compare the two. The resolution of the BenQ is of course significantly lower (1920x1080 vs. 2650x1440), so it's not really apples to apples (did I mention it's < 1/4 of the price?); however, that's enough for what she's using it for, and she would probably use that resolution anyway, to reduce eye strain. The color is every bit as good, and it's lighter and slimmer. There's also significantly less glare. There's nothing cheap-looking about the construction. It's solid and has a nice vertical pivot mount. Time will tell how well it holds up, but it at least appears well made.
The one quirk that some other reviews have mentioned is that it doesn't auto-detect the input. You have to select the HDMI input (the first time) using the menu buttons, or it will just sit there for a minute and shut itself off. Reading some of the negative reviews, I suspect some people never figured this out and just assumed the monitor was bad. Once the correct input was selected, the Mac correctly detected it and everything worked perfectly.
It (surprisingly) has built-in speakers, but they aren't very good. They can use the HDMI audio directly, but if you do that, there's no soft volume control, so you have to adjust the volume with the menu buttons or pre-fade it with the app playing the music, which is a little clumsy. If sound is important to you, you'll definitely want to use separate amplified speakers (you can buy some *really* good speakers with some of the money you just saved).
Bottom line: if you're looking for a good monitor, and 1080p resolution is enough for you, you can't do better than this one.
I bought this monitor for playing Minecraft & MMORPGs and for watching movies, it works AWESOME. (There is some motion blur in Minecraft when running 128bit textures, setting the AMA feature to premium resolves most of this issue. Honestly your eyes get used to the little bit of motion blur, and I'd rather have the deep blacks and crisp colors over the frame rate for my usage.)
I also tried the Asus VG248QE and the ViewSonic VA2746M prior to selecting this monitor. The Asus was horribly bright with tons of IPS glow and uneven back bleed, the color palette was WAY over saturated and everything looked cartoony, gama shift / viewing angles were very good, screen response & refresh rates were great, no motion blur or screen tearing. If you need a gaming monitor for use in a bright room and fast response is what you want over color quality & contrast ratio this is the monitor for you.
The ViewSonic monitor was just plain poor in every quality mentioned above, the gama shift / viewing angles were just awful and the IPS glow was just as bright as the Asus monitor....and this is supposed to be a VA monitor!!! If your considering this monitor, DON'T, the BenQ is WAY better.
Here's a few things to keep in mind about this monitor. Right out of the box it's nice and large. Assembly is very easy and takes about 2 minutes to complete. The bezels are very thin and attractive which is great if you plan on expanding to dual monitors in the future. The menu buttons are on the back of the screen which is a bit awkward for access. They are clearly labeled on the front so you know what you're pushing. The menu navigation is self explanatory and many preset viewing modes are included. This monitor does lack height adjustments and a pivot feature which limits its basic ergonomics to tilt. The included stand is relatively sturdy as long as you don't shake your desk a lot. Standard VESA mounting holes are provided on the back if you want to mount it on an arm. Due to the 27" screen size, the 1920x1080 resolution falls just short of the 100 pixels per square inch sweet spot.
In conclusion, this monitor lacks a few features you would expect to see on a professional model but for the $200 price point it's pretty darn hard to beat. If you want better ergonomics, 2560x1440 resolution and a refresh rate greater than 60 Hz you're probably going to spend closer to $400 for a nice IPS panel. For the average user this Monitor will perform quite nicely. Competitive gamers and design professionals may want to invest a little bit more in a higher end model.

One small disadvantage: you can't customize the brightness and contrast. You can adjust the blue-light level though.
The monitor has three inputs: VGA, DVI, HDMI. The only cable you get is the one for VGA. If like most people you intend to use HDMI, you will have to buy an extra cable. (You do get a power cord though.) There is an output jack for speakers or headphone, but no separate audio input; if your computer doesn't output audio through HDMI, I'm not sure what you can do. I don't care about the sound, so I like this monitor well enough.
Update. It's been a month and I've been able to use the monitor in other ways with other computers. The good news is that the monitor still works well at 1920x1080p (hi def) with the HDMI input. The not so good news is that it poorly handles other resolutions, especially with the VGA input. In particular, it drops half the last line in standard PC text mode (24 lines, 80 columns). Computers outputting that are getting rare, so this slight defect will probably not be important to most people. Also, the monitor takes a suprisingly long time to handle a change in the display resolution, often blanking out for 5 seconds or so. This is annoying, but again probably not a frequent occurrence for most people.
I'm editing pics and vids, so color representation was more important than responsiveness. On that note, the caveat of this monitor is the AMA settings - BenQ's Advanced Motion Acceleration. As far as I can see it just creates ghosting. It looks similar to vids rendered with resample enabled, if you're familiar with editing.
There is noticeably less eye strain with this monitor. In that regard it's great. Adding the blue light feature is good only if you're using the monitor primarily for reading. It interferes with accurate color representation for editing pics and vids. And with the monitor button placements it's awkward to be switching back and forth, so I leave it off. The flicker free setting on its own is enough to reduce eye strain.
You'll find a very good, in depth, review of this monitor at PCMonitors dot info, where they address the AMA ghosting issue. Taken from them, here is a sum of the 3 AMA settings:
- With AMA 'Off' there is a bold and discrete primary trail and very faint secondary ghosting trail.
- With AMA set to 'High' it weakens the primary trail somewhat and reduces the secondary trail
- With AMA set to 'Premium' there is obnoxiously bright trails of ghosting
So AMA set to High is actually the setting with the least ghosting. It's acceptable by me.
I think the average user would be very happy with this monitor. Especially the contrast and color. It's a very good compromise between the lesser quality of TN panels and the higher quality of IPS panels at an affordable price.
I'd give it a solid 7.5 or 8 \ 10
The three attached pictures are the three AMA settings taken from PCMonitors dot info. From left to right the pics are AMA High, AMA Off and AMA Premium. You can see that AMA high has the least amount of ghosting
