Perfect for weaving introduction!!
5 Stars
Perfect for weaving introduction!!
This was my first attempt a weaving, something I got interested in exploring after loving macrame / macraweave so I went on the Amazon hunt for a simple loom. This very affordable loom had all the suggested features (minus heddle) mentioned in my various intro to tapestry weaving books. It did not disappoint. I mean for $25!!! I included a few examples of weavings I completed on this M&D loom. I’ve upgraded now to a larger/adjustable loom with a heddle but I don’t plan to get rid of this one and I’m so grateful such a solid affordable option was available on my journey to falling in love with weaving. If you are curious if weaving is for you, get this one!

This is a very nice loom for beginners like myself. I bought this after leaving my local art store. They had a professional loom that was smaller than this one but for $80. I didn’t want to spend that much on my 1st loom so I got this one instead. I was worried it would be toy like since it’s advertised for children, but it definitely not. It’s very sturdy & it’s the perfect size. I looked through basically every loom Amazon had to offer, and I’m so glad I picked this one.

Got these for Christmas for my 7yr old twins last year. We have always loved Melissa & Doug products and these don't disappoint! This is an amazing price for a loom this size! Search for lap looms and make sure to look at the sizes and you will see what I mean.

Easy to assemble and pretty sturdy when tight. Comes with great yarn for the first few projects and directions and can be set up for 2 different widths. My girls are pretty crafty so they picked up the process in less then a few minutes and were off on their own. They have made purses, rugs, coasters, doll blankets and more in the last 9 months. Their art teacher wants to get a set for the classroom.

The only complaint I could say I have it 2 screw that keep it together get loose after a while so it gets a touch less sturdy, but it is easy to tighten and again an amazing price.

Yarn Tip: Yarn is pricey while they are 'experimenting'. Check local thriftshops for affordable yarn for them to practice with!

I bought these unasked-for surprises for my 3 grand daughters at Christmas time. I also checked out all the adult looms and would have bought one, if it was bigger or better. But this was the sturdiest and biggest, and a good value. Their busy mothers didn't have time to set them up, but the 11 year old figured it out following directions, and without help, did her own weaving, but will need help putting the pieces together to make scarf! The six and nine year olds needed help putting the looms together, while on a ski trip, but developed an amazing amount of patience, and both were pleased with their beautiful purses with matching chain stitch crocheted draw strings I made for them, We went shopping immediately to Mammoth (ski) Village, and they were able to put their money in them and use them to carry home their purchases for gift shops! Love the looms! Will borrow one next year to make Christmas scarves!

I got this for my daughter who expressed interest in learning to weave after a lesson on different home structures where the people had thatched roofs. This was easy to put together, easy for her to use (once we figured out how to use it), and the colorful yarn that it comes with is magical for a child to make rainbow scarves with. The problem is the instructions don't very clearly tell you how to do this in an easy way. We had to you tube it. Basically if you don't want tangles and nonsense and hours of work to get one line done, you have to use shorter lengths of string, but the instruction manual didn't tell you how to "add other strings on later", but luckily a youtube video showed us how. Hint: you need to know how to tie a square knot, and you tie the ends together to keep weaving. Once we figured that out, using it was a breeze. Also, the needle had some peeling off parts that resulted in poking of fingers, but I shaved the sharp parts off.

This is an excellent loom for the cost, whether you're interested in purchasing it for a child or yourself. I've wanted to try weaving for awhile but never wanted to spend a ton on something I didn't know I'd even like or stick with, and I didn't want the hassle of making one by hand, hammering nails and finding an easel and such. This loom is a pretty substantial size, especially for this price. It is easy to use once you get the hang of it, although the directions aren't very helpful, honestly. You're better off going on YouTube and watching beginner weaving tutorials and just applying them to using this loom. The pictures are all black and white and aren't very detailed or clear. Most of the directions are just written out and difficult to translate into what you're doing. For a product that is geared toward children I'm surprised by how poorly the directions are executed. I also recommend getting a curved tapestry needle if you're an adult or teenager, because the large wooden one it comes with is rather bulky and isn't going to cut it for detailed work. It's helpful for some things, but I much prefer using a tapestry needle, or my hands with chunkier yarns or fabrics.
You can use any size of yarn, string or fabric with this loom. A previous reviewer said that only a larger worsted yarn can be used, but I disagree. You just have to kind of play around and see what works and make adjustments to how you thread the loom and what you thread it with. I managed to have two strands of the white string the loom comes with in each space, which makes the weave tighter and accommodates a smaller worst. I also recommend using a wide tooth comb to keep your weave tight after you've finished a row.
All in all, this a great craft tool and is a ton of fun. I honestly haven't stopped weaving since I got it set up and went to the craft store to get all kinds of yarn ($100 worth lol). As it is now, I'm well on my way to having a brand new wall hanging and I'm looking forward to all the possibilities this loom will help me create in the future. If you want to start learning to weave, this loom is definitely a great option without spending a fortune.

The loom and yarn are made well. It is also easy for a child to use. We had a quality issue with a missing piece and a duplicative piece in our box. With the tapestry paper sets, each piece is numbered. When we opened the owl set, we were missing slat #11 making the project incomplete. My child was disappointed we were unable to finish the project. When we opened the turtle tapestry set, we had a duplicative slat for #1. There is obviously a quality issue on the tapestry sets. We missed the return window as this was purchased early for a gift. We would appreciate a replacement piece #11 slat for the owl tapestry so this project is able to be completed. Thank you

Great for beginners. It is sturdy, easy to warp and easy to weave on. I appreciate that you can take the legs off and weave on a table, but I prefer weaving with the legs on.

I wanted to learn how to weave and this loom has pretty good reviews online. The price was great for a start and it comes with yarn and a 'mostly smooth' wooden needle. It also comes with 3 cardboard paper pictures for you to weave, but that's not what I wanted personally. The loom was mostly together in the box except for the feet and these were easy to attach either using the instructions or from know how. For my very first project I am doing the Craft Carry All bag. There is only one set of instructions on how to thread the weaving area which is for the small left side (coaster) and every project in this kit returns back to that instruction. So basically you start from top left then down and up continuing on towards the right side, but the only problem I ran into for my project was my string on the right side was pointing down and at the bottom-not like the coaster's which was at the top and you tie it around the dowel. Eventually I figured out to go underneath the bottom crossbar come up and then tie my string around the dowel and vertical string. Next after guessing how much yarn to cut off for the first rows and starting to use the needle weaving in and out I found the wooden needle was catching on the yarn fibres a little and my pile of yarn also kept getting tied up. (Note: the space between the right hand dowel and the vertical side bar is just barely wide enough for your needle to come through). So after the second row I decided to make my own shuttle so I could wrap a couple of layers of yarn around it (that's all that will fit through that space I talked about) which solved the knotting issue. The weaving went so much faster after I made that shuttle (foam board-9.5"x2.5"). I do wish the space between the dowels and side bars was a little wider so I could wrap more yarn around the shuttle and maybe this kit could have a shuttle instead of a needle or maybe both. I will probably sand the needle to get rid of any rough spots since I will use it near the top of the project. I'm looking forward to experimenting with this loom and maybe trying some tapestries.
