When first saw this model on Ideas it was love at first sight, I put my vote in, and hoped it would get to 10K, be picked by Lego and go into production.
I was so glad that it did make it, only to be dashed when I missed out on the first production run. But I wasn't to be denied, I got my hands on one from the second run. After clicking the submit order button I could hardly wait the 2 Prime shipping days, And I must say I was not disappointed, the wait was worth it.
The box itself is very cool, display worthy in it's own right. But the real treasure is what's inside, the instruction book, which includes the story behind the set, and the 4 bags of parts that are soon to be a brilliant model.
The build was very enjoyable, employing several non-traditional techniques, but could be considered tedious by some. This is definitely not a "kid friendly" build. It took me a couple hours to build, what with all the parts that are for there for the details. Plus the bonus of classic Space minifigures in previously unreleased green and a cute "Turtle Mech".
The finish model is amazing in it's detail and is very poseable. I would say that it's very playable though as it is delicate due to the level of detail on it.
So in conclusion I would say that this model is the perfect blend of Sci-Fi with nostalgia from the classic Space sets. It has found a home on my display shelf where I can admire it. I even "change it's pose on occasion", okay play with, bringing back youthful memories. .
Exo Suit is a great LEGO set depicting a Aliens style exo-suit operated by a classic Green space mini figure. The set is a great build, but somewhat complex, more appropriate for a somewhat older lego fan than a young child. There are many greeblings (small pieces that add texture rather than function), so it doesn't make a great play piece. If your child plays with the set a lot expect to be repairing small pieces that fall off on a regular basis. That said, this set would make an amazing subject for stop-motion lego video, as it has wonderful articulation and possibility for a lot of creativity and expression.
In addition to the Exo Suit mech itself, you also get a small "turtle" mech and a second green classic space mini figure (a female figure as well, which are relatively uncommon)
As of this posting Jan 2015 this set is in regular production and is widely available for its MSRP of $34.99. While some Ideas set have had very limited production and became unavailable quickly after release (such as Mars Curiosity Rover), this set appears to be in heavy production. We expect it to remain available through 2016, after which it will likely go out of print. We expect it to go up in price substantially at that point as resellers fill the market, so if you like this set buy it before then.
As a long time Lego builder, I found this set to be a nice challenge.
No big pieces, it's made up entirely of what I refer to as "trim" pieces.
Small add on pieces that normally are just detail and flavor.
The result is a great looking, very mechanical model. It's borderline steampunk and would convert very quickly to full on to a steam powered unit. If done in yellow and black, you could just imagine the "Cat" logo on it somewhere.
Probably not very "playable" due to the very high level of articulation and small parts.
But as a display model... outstanding.
If you like powered armor or robots, this one is definitely for you.
It took him about an hour to build, maybe less (hard to tell because he had to keep stopping for silly things like dinner, homework, and drum lessons), and he was easily able to complete it without any help. Even before he had it half built, he was going on and on about how cool it was. The finished model looks great and is easy to pose and balance standing up. It has a lot of interesting uses of different pieces in ways you might not normally build with, so it's fun that way. I can also see how using pieces in new ways can inspire kids to think creatively about their own projects. My son said he loved the way the legs of the Exo Suit were jointed "like a lizard or dinosaur," and he noticed it even looks awesome from the back. The retro look of the astronauts (and one is a girl, yay Lego!) is a nice touch and the turtle/rover is just plain cute.
Of course, the beauty of Lego is that you can adjust it to do your own thing. After playing with the finished set for a while, my son said he thought the arms were a bit too long and that the claws were "too much." He then set about rebuilding them to suit his own taste, resulting in a suit with no claws, fewer fingers, and slightly shorter arms -- with a little help from Lego pieces in his own collection. I have no doubt this is a model that will be played with, displayed, and not taken apart to build something else.
