I thought I’d provide a long term review as I’ve been using this stand on a daily basis for over 2 years and am amazed how well it has served me. I use this at my bed with an Apple iPad Air 2 a fairly thin and light tablet but heavier than a phone.
It has a heavy stable base that that prevents it from tipping in any orientation (I use it on carpet). The arm is is in 2 sections by leaving the lower horizontal part stationary over the most stable part of the base, one can use their device at max distance from base and then swing it aside when done.
The calipers that hold the device are the best part and excellently designed with a padded contact point that sits on a spring platform. The spring allows for more travel than the thickness of the cushions unlike other holders I’ve seen. This is important as the extra travel allows one to ratchet the tightness consistently each time. It is tight enough to hold my device in any orientation (even in portrait mode) without slipping (it has never dropped my iPad) but also keeps prevents over tightening and damaging the device. A simple press of the release button unlocks the ratchet and frees the device.
The holder allows one to twist it from landscape to portrait as needed and even pivoting up/down/left and right with no need to loosen and tighten a tension screw or locking/unlocking. Also once you set the tension spring on the upper vertical arm to counter the weight of the device (they include a tool for this), one can lift or lower the device easily and it will stay in place. I’ve had to adjust this 2x in 2 years of ownership.
The only weak part I found was the collar that holds the moving arms onto the stationary vertical tube. It is plastic with a metal pin that passes through it and the metal vertical tube attached to the base to join both together. This design is fine if one doesn’t lift the unit by grabbing the movable arms above the collar. Since the base is heavy, lifting in this manner places all the weight of the base on the pin which will eventually break the plastic collar it passes through. Lifting at the base or by the lower vertical tube will avoid this.
I was lazy and after lifting the unit several times a week for ~1 y, the collar broke at the pin hole. It was usable as long as I didn’t lift it as the upper tube would slide out of the lower tube. I fixed this with a hack that secured the upper and lower vertical tubes together with a new pin (made from copper wire) and drilling a new hole through the metal tube and collar.
This item is pricier than most others but there is value if you use it as much as I do.
Note: I saw a comment on running a charging cable through the tubes to make it convenient. While this can be done I use magnetic cable clips to keep a longe charging cable attached to the tube of the unit.
