Customers have mixed opinions about the ease of installation of the networking router. Some mention that the software is easy to use and set up, while others say that the setup was a huge pain and the antennae setup was unusually difficult. Original Review…I spend a lot of time in a metal building barn 100 yards from my cabin. My eero mesh in the cabin will not penetrate the metal building.
I purchased 2 of these cpe510 units. I installed one as the host in the cabin connected by Ethernet to the primary eero router. The other is mounted outside the metal barn with an Ethernet cable running inside to another eero router. IT WORKS!
Coverage in the shed is excellent. No more walking outside the shed to make a call, send a text, or do a search. No more stopping work when I’m expecting a call. I am very pleased.
I must say, the setup of the antennae was unusually difficult. The provided instructions were pitifully inadequate. I am handy, but no IT expert. Among many other steps, you are required to set separate static IP addresses for the host and client antennae. Even drafting that sentence makes my eyes glaze over. 🙄.
I could not have completed it without the patient assistance of Edemer Nunez at TP Link support. He spent 45 minutes in the phone shepherding me through the setup process. Whatever they are paying him…it’s not enough.
I own several products from TP Link. Particularly the Kasa 360 degree cameras. Excellent products that are easy to install and use. Not so with the CPE 510.
The product works well. TP Link must simplify the installation process, AND, give Edemer a raise!
I searched before buying to see if a window would affect the performance At my distance I can say definitively that it does not.
Thanks for looking at my review. I am very pleased with this TP Link product! In fact, I am so pleased with it that I feel that it is well worth reviewing on Amazon.
Here is my setup. Essentially I am internet sharing with a family member. In order to d o so, I mounted an "AP" TP-Link antenna on the outside of their house about 12 feet off the ground. I then used CAT5e to wire a connect to it from the network switch. After that, I wired a TP-link antenna on my house in "Client" mode using the same configuration. I then plugged it into my ASUS wireless router. The mounting originally was not very good. They were not angled correctly so I used the meter built into the antenna to figure out the best possible angle. This was a fantastic feature that I am very grateful they included. After orientating them correctly, I began to receiving the signal. I established the internet connection and was getting 50/30 internet. I double checked with TP-Link's tech support (which was very responsive) and they said that was a really good connection. While the antennas say they can do 300/300, you have to look to see that for some reason the LAN connection is only 10/100. That being said, I was very pleased with the connection speed. I can steam 4K content all while browsing the internet.
Overall, I am very happy with this antenna. I have tested it in several Minnesota storms - including wind, hail, rain, snow, and grossly low temps. If you're looking for a reliable internet connection using a fixed antenna, look no further. It gets almost no more reliable and consistent than this product. FYI, I purchased two.
-----Update-----
I now have had an uninterrupted connection for 20 days. I am extremely pleased with the reliability of this product!
____Update
I still have yet to have an issue with this product. I was originally concerned because the max network speed is really limited by the 10/100 mbps network port rather than the 300 mbps wireless negotiating speed, but frankly I have never had a significant slow down. I have a constant load on my network due to four iPads, one TIVO, three laptops, four Google Homes, six smart switches, three smartphones, two ROKU TVs, and other miscellaneous devices. Most of these are constantly running some sort of process in the background if they aren't being used actively. While my up/down speed test shows I'm usually getting 30/30 - 50/40, the connection and speed are so stable it doesn't matter if I'm not getting faster up/down speeds.
I will set a calendar reminder to update this during February! We'll see how rural Minnesota weather treats them.
