1. No worries about leaking chemicals.
2. Easier to clean.
3. So much more durable. You have to toss plastic ones out after a while due to wear and tear but not with this. That means less junk for the earth as well.
Now the possible disadvantages
1. Heavier. BUT not bad at all! I'm surprised that it's so much lighter than I had expected.
2. Venting is not as fancy as some other brand like Dr Brown's. BUT they can be used in combination. Do note that 1) that way you are not plastic free. 2) you don't want to fill to the max 8oz because it's not designed with extra space and will leak. I only fill up to 7oz when using the full venting system.
Now, the BEST way to use them with Dr Brown's venting is without the blue part (the long tube). This works because the opening of this glass bottle is slightly smaller, allowing the vent part (vanilla color) to stay at top without falling into the bottle; also it doesn't affect venting much. The only difference is with the blue part air goes all the way to the bottom of the bottle; without it air comes out of the end of the vent and accumulates at the end of formula body.
It is so much better than using the full system because
1. It increases the amount of milk you can feed at once. The blue part is what takes a lot of space. Now you can fill 8 oz.
2. One fewer part to wash!
3. Less plastic that comes into contact with milk!
Knowing how precious breast milk is, I've tried several tests on these because I read various reviews that state that the bottles tend to break, especially in a bottle warmer. Here's my brief observation:
- Freezer: I place one bottle in the freezer up to the 8oz marketing, sealed the bottle with a lid and let it stay in the freezer overnight. The bottle did not last, it was broken. I didn't completely fill the bottle so I've decided not to use these for storing milk in the freezer. I'd go nuts if that were my breast milk and the bottle completely shattered from being in the freezer. So it loses a start for that.
-Fridge: Works perfectly, no complaints.
-Hot Water: Several times I've heated up water in the microwave for three minutes and immediately took the bottle out of the refrigerator and into the very hot water. And, the bottle did not crack, break or shatter.
-I've used the Dr. Brown storage lids on these bottles and they fit. I did notice that when the bottle is shaken, a very small amount (several drops) of water/liquid/formula (whatever you have in the bottle) will leak, but not significantly. If you were using these for breast milk, you wouldn't shake the bottle as is but swirl the milk so this may not be a concern for some people. My only thought is, what happens if the bottle is placed in a bag and is tumbled all around, will it then leak significantly? I don't plan on carrying the bottles like that so I'm not worried about it.
-At first glance, the nipples seem really cheap and not durable. That's fine as I don't plan on using the nipple for a breatfed baby and instead plan to use the Medela Calma nipple with the Evenflo glass bottles. The Medela nipples (standard and Calma) fits these glass bottles and there is no leakage. You can also use all the Medela lids on these bottles, except for the Medela labeling lids, which do not fit the glass bottles. There are many bad reviews about the Calma nipple, but there is apparently a technique that you must use to have a great experience with them, so I'm giving them a try.
Overall, I'm very pleased with the bottles. Although, I did purchase a pack from Target (on clearance for $10.06), and they had some minor imperfections (about two out of the six bottles) for example an apparent "crack" on the outside of the bottle, but it's not a crack...just some kind of imperfection.
Only pet-peeve is that they occasionally leak around the neck. Could be because I use Dr. Brown's nipples. I've tightened it to the point of not letting air vent through (just to test), and still had a leak. It's not usually a lot, but enough to drip a drop or 5 onto baby or down the bottle. And again, not every time.
Either way, I'm very grateful to have found these. I was able to transition baby from Dr. Brown's (once colic was done) to the EvenFlo. Granted the Dr. Brown's set-up leaked even more than the EvenFlo, but now that we've transitioned, I'm glad to be done with all those extra Dr. Brown's parts.
This is much simpler, and much less plastic.
