Then... this clock. This glorious, wonderful, magical clock.
Full disclosure, this isn't going to work for everyone and every toddler. Ours happens to enjoy routine and structure, so this clock is basically worth its weight in gold. If you have a toddler that does well with routines, this is the clock for you! We use it for the following:
- Staying in bed - this is huge in the morning! Toddler has to stay in bed until it turns orange. We still have to set it fairly early (otherwise toddler is prone to wetting the bed after waking or just lays there, bored for too long). But we're pretty certain that it has encouraged more sleep as toddler wakes up around 5, sees that it's still blue, and dozes for another hour. We used the alarm feature on the weekdays when we needed to get going, but we stopped that, since toddler wakes up before that anyway and we try to encourage more sleep whenever possible.
- Nap Times - having a separate nap feature is awesome! Even when toddler gives up naps (we dread the day, but, like winter, we know it's coming), we plan on enforcing 'quiet time' or 'feet off floor time' to give parents a break and active toddler a needed rest. Since toddler is very used to having to stay in bed while the clock is blue, we foresee a fairly easy transition. But the nap timer actually made nap times easier, as toddler knows the routine and knows that once the clock is on, they have to stay in bed.
- Time out - love that this can be customized and it does a small beep when the time out is over. Sadly, our toddler figured out the 'secret' (eye roll) method of button clicking to change it back to orange, so we've had to put it up on a high shelf during time outs (the battery feature comes in especially handy then).
- 'Encourage' - to be honest, we've only used this once or twice, and we tried it for potty training (didn't really work - toddler is stubborn, but whatever). If we really needed to focus on a particular activity, it could come in useful - perhaps set for 5 minutes and kids have to clean up or do something as long as it's green? Not sure, but even if we don't use it now, I'm sure we'll find a use down the road!
- White noise - we're not white noise all the time type of folks - we don't want to be dependent on that to sleep. But we do have a few minutes of white noise to transition from the music to sleep. If we were sleeping in a different environment away from home, we might use more white noise. Either way, it's a great option to have!
Cons - (There has to be something!) I do wish there were more story/music options. I think the 'story' for bed time is super lame, but toddler doesn't seem to mind. I would like to change it up, but it seems like all the music is the same, so I'm not paying a bunch of extra money to hear a slightly different, lame 'story' for 10 minutes. We read to toddler anyway, we just use the story feature as a signal that lights should be off and sleep is imminent.
Honestly, this clock is super functional and allows for a ton of customization, which is why we coughed up a few extra dollars over the other popular toddler clocks. We've really loved all the features feel like this has really helped us get more sleep for everyone involved. Most toddlers wants to do the right thing, and if you can start them young enough (maybe 18 months? depending on the kid), I think this really sets a tone and great expectations for sleep.
Good night and good luck!
Wrong. Fail. Right now I've got two tantrumming toddlers because they both want the new and improved clock. Save me! Bring me wine!
Okay all joking aside, these clocks are awesome. I did like the size of the old version better. This one is smaller. The great thing about this version though is that the controls for changing time are behind the face panel... My sons LOVE changing times on the old clock. I'm glad it's a bit harder to reach but I'm sure they could figure out how to get the front panel off if they had enough time to mess around with it (I've got a 3.5 and 1.5 year old).
It's very easy to set, no instructions needed, and there's battery backup for the plug. Battery backup is key here if you have power outages in your area... My first son lives by his clock now. He's had his since he was 18 mo or so and he knows he stays in his room until the light is yellow. I think it was helpful for sleep training him and he seemed to understand what colors meant pretty early (with parent explanation).
You can control settings and time for bedtime, nap, discipline, rewards, etc. This new version lets you set different wake/bed times for weekends vs weekdays which is neat... We won't use it because our kids will be on same schedule everyone day (I wish they'd sleep in on Saturdays!), but for some kids it might work very well. When you want to discipline them (time out), you can press the red button.., it'll set up a timer and red face for however long you set it for. I do 1 min per year old (so my oldest gets 3 minutes). Green light is for rewards... Press that for special reward time (ie. 1:1 time with parent, screen time etc). Dark blue is bedtime and light blue is nap time. If you set bedtime at 6:30pm but one night the kids *need* to go down early, you can press the dark blue early (wink). If the kids are breaking down tired, we will sometimes run upstairs for bedtime ahead of them to hit the blue button so they don't get fussy about it not being bedtime. "Oh look the light is blue!" Lol.
I tried another clock on market and wasn't a fan. It wasn't an easy to setup. I think these clocks are amazing and awesome. They make great gifts for parents too, if they don't already have something.
Note: Picture I added is comparison between new version of clock and old version. Smaller one is the new one. Definitely takes up less space but I do like the big size for my sons' ages.
I added this video to YouTube to demonstrate how these clocks work and to compare the newer and older version. Enjoy: https://youtu.be/Mg523WsJ5V8

This clock is extremely expensive but can attest that it has been worth every penny. Do your mental health a favour and get it!
Solution: My Tot Clock. Set wake time to 7am with yellow back light
Result: Concerned as 4 year old still in bed at 7:30am. Enter room to find him staring at the clock and excited to tell us it is morning!
This clock has been a game changer for us! I love being able to explain to him that it is bedtime when the back light is blue and still time to sleep when it isn't yellow in the morning. I also use the Red back light (thinking time) with a 5 minute timeout if he has a nightmare in the middle of the night as it isn't as bright as the other colours. He is so proud to have his own clock!
Our Settings:
7:00pm - Blue back light turns on and clock plays white noise
8:00pm - Blue back light and white noise turns off
7:00am - Yellow back light turns on
8:00am - Yellow back light turns off
It is absolutely amazing, I wish that when my children were young something like this existed.
He know when the clock is blue it's time for bed and in morning yellow means time to wake up.
Plays music wonderful purchase
