The machine is fantastic for it's intended purpose. If you enjoy rowing, then this machine doesn't disappoint in that area. My knowledge of mechanics for how to row is entirely from watching technique videos on youtube. My natural inclination for the motion was probably 85% correct already, but it was good to see how it's supposed to be done to really do it properly from the start. I would say the motion felt quite natural after 25K and you only improve after that with fatigue being the real hinderance to maintaining form all the time.
Hardware:
Comes in a easy to handle box that actually has cutouts for your hands to grab onto. Made it easy for me to carry in myself. Depending on your strength, you might want a second person to help carry it. Everything is well packaged and secured. Little risk of damage unless someone drops or smashes the box.
Assembly is simple. Just a handful of screws to attach the front legs. Then attach the rail to the main 'head' and you are done. The attaching of the rail is just line up and snap together. Very easy. 20 mins at most including time to take things out of the box.
The rail system is nice and smooth feeling. No complaints on that. The seat on the other hand, leaves a bit to be desired, but it isn't the end of the world. It's just hard plastic essentially and will be fine for short distance rows, but you definitely start to feel discomfort sitting on it on longer rows. I would highly suggest getting some sort of pad. I would recommend something low profile and with firmer support vs memory foam or anything that compresses as I find that firm but not plastic hard support to feel the best. It won't eliminate discomfort on long rows but it makes a difference for sure. Should be noted that over time, the discomfort seems to lessen.
Handles are fine. No thrills, but nothing bad. Handle grip is rubber textured, and comfortable enough. If you are new like me, you'll develop some calluses most likely, but nothing unbearable. Proper hold is loose grip and mine have developed without tearing or causing any issues. Shouldn't be an issue.
PM5 is a bit dated looking but it does the job it needs to do. Programming workouts is simple and the predefined workouts aren't bad. There's no option to set multiusers on the PM5 itself sadly, but you can use a USB thumb drive. Using the Concept 2 software on your computer, you can format and set each thumb driver to an individual user (still one per user, but any cheap spare small storage one you have will suffice). Alternatively, and what I use is the ErgData app on my phone to sync with the PM5 via bluetooth. It has horrible reviews and I was skeptical of it at first, but have had 0 issues with it so far. The plus side is if you use it, it produces charts some charts for you if you upload to the online log book. Uploading data only collected from the PM5 itself or with the USB thumb drive doesn't produce these charts.
Noise:
It's noticeable... I personally don't mind it while I'm working out, but it may be distracting if you are watching something. I usually just use wireless earbuds and it blocks out most of the noise from the flywheel and I can watch vids or listen to music comfortably enough. Others may not appreciate the noise though. My little one complained :) I originally had this in the living room, but moved it to the basement to spare him the noise when he is trying to study or watch some tv. I've read the noise can be annoying in some condo dwellings, so something to consider.
Size:
It's long. Make sure you have the space per the dimensions specified. When broken down into 2 pieces, it is about the size of my exercise bike. Breaking down and re-attaching the 2 pieces is quick and simple, but still a bit tedious if you are doing it every day. If you use it often (daily) you might want to have a space you can leave it as one piece all the time, but it's certainly not a deal breaker to have to break it down to put to the side. Takes less than a minute.
Maintenance:
Overall, maintenance is fairly simple.
- Wipe down the rail once in a while.
- Oil the chain every 50hrs of use. C2 recommends SAE 20 oil and specifically the 3 in 1 Multipurpose oil but any 20W should work. I actually went with the 3 in 1 Motor Oil as that is actually SAE 20 whereas the multipurpose I think is light weight but either should be fine. You can put some on the rollers under the seat as well if you like. I do this every so often.
- Clean out the fly wheel at your discretion. I'm sure there's a recommended period, but it'll probably depend on how dusty your environment is. This can be done with a vac and if it gets really dirty, you might need to take off the cover (just a few screws).
Overall impressions:
I have enjoyed the rower a lot. I use it daily for the most part for roughly 5K. I enjoy that it's full body and get less bored during the workout than I usually do running or on a exercise bike. If you needed just one piece of equipment and one workout, this machine certainly is a good choice given how many body parts are worked in each stroke (assuming you are doing it properly). I do supplement with weights and other workouts, but imagine doing just rowing would be good enough for most. The only downside is the noise and that is subjective; you may or may not care about that.
This is not a cheap piece of equipment so be honest with yourself. Do you actually think you will enjoy it? Don't just get it because people told you rowing is great. If you don't really want to do it, it makes for an expensive drying rack or dust collector. If you are going to use it, it is well worth the investment.
First off, it is long -- you need 9 feet linear to use it when set up. But you can split it in half and store the parts upright in a much smaller footprint, so it worked for us for 3). For 1) and 2) it also fits the bill perfectly. No impact, but can be an intense workout. I was full-body sore after only a few 5 minute intro sessions, which is what I wanted. We leave it set up in a guest room, but can store it easily in the corner when there's visitors (it's like 2'x3' or so footprint stored. This means I have instant access for a quick workout first thing in the morning -- even an intense 10 minutes before morning shower is worth it. Face it -- I knew I wouldn't go to the gym. I don't have time for that, and I don't want people looking at me. It's hard to say I don't have time for 15 minutes with no travel time to the gym and changing and showering and all that. I wasn't sure -- I mean, I don't row for real in a boat. And don't ever plan to do so. But as for exercise, this is a workout.
OK, it's boring. But that's why we have streaming music. I find it meditative -- once you ease into a rhythm, you can just meditate on the motion, focusing on the bar in front of you and zone out into the music while 10 minutes and 100 calories glides by. To me, that's the best. Any solid workout, from spin to personal training, to jogging, burns around 100 calories / 10 mins. What's great about the ergometer is that the monitor right there in front of you tells you what your burn rate and expended calories is so far, in terms of energy required to spin that flywheel. So if you go a slow pace, you might only burn a baseline 300 calories/hour as your learn and warm up, but then you work up into the 800 cals/hour range for some burst intervals and you can hit 200 calories in 20 mins. I love this feedback right there.
I guess the monitor also hooks up to some 3rd party software I have yet to try. So you can do online competitions, virtual scenery, personalized programs and upload to your friends if you're in need of accountability reinforcement, etc. I'm going to look into this at some point, but for now I just sit down, do the first pull and the monitor turns, starts the clock and tells me how much I have burned and what my current pace is. That's just great. And since it's a giant flywheel, it can generate electricity to run the monitor without using much of the batteries. Nice!
My wife also can use it, even though she's half my size. Just sit down and go. She might have to move the footstraps, but that's 30 seconds and easy. She can pick her own pace. With 2 people using it, the cost is much better than a gym membership.
Overall I am quite happy with this rower. I am new to rowing, but with a few videos they offer online and doing the training they suggest, I managed to get a reasonable repeatable stroke after maybe 5 minutes of practice. They also have a video of common mistakes, which was great to watch once you get comfortable and move harder and faster, since that's when the bad habits creep in. If you start slow and focus on form for the warmup, then go hard, then focus on form when you're tired in a cooldown (much harder to have good form when you're tired!) you can make sure to avoid bad habits and let yourself get all the benefits when you get into a really strong, hard pace. Burning 400 calories in 30 minutes in my target now -- after a week I can do 200 in 20 minutes. The nice thing about a consistent workout is when you are sore from the last workout, the best remedy isn't rest or Advil, it's to jump on and do a gentle workout just to warm things up without going nuts. That's one thing I love about having this setup all the time at home -- I can jump on for 5 mins for a quick little warmup whenever I feel like it, in between the hard 30 minutes sessions where I am more serious.
OK I wrote a lot. But for $1000 I wanted to be sure it was worth it, and wanted to help those of you looking to maintain fitness as you enter middle-age, have kids and can't go to the gym, and can't handle anything not low impact. And can work in a cramped lifestyle, both in time and space.
As for this product in particular -- I am happy with the construction. It's super solid. Easy to put together (even came with the screwdriver needed). Easy to store when needed. Easy to just sit and go. Clear constant feedback on calorie burn. Comfortable to sit on, and smooth operation. Chain is great quality and works smoothly. Handle is comfortable and easy to hold for extended time. Seat slider action is smooth and comfortable enough to not be noticeable even after 30 mins. Foot pedals are excellent -- easily adjustable for multiple users to quickly get on and go, with pull straps for easy in and out securing. Model D is "lower" for people who doesn't have mobility issues. Model E is a higher seat for less squatting to get on and off, so consider the Model E if you're older or with joint issues for getting down low and back up. Model D is perfect for us, no issues at all. I think the Model D is the only one with adjustable screen position, as well, which is better for my wife and I to adjust. I picked up some chain oil, but it only needs it after many hours of use, so no concerns there.
Now it only needs Virtual Reality.

Fitness pur unser Weihnachtsgeschenk und Geschenk für unseren Körper
It arrives in a giant box, and the whole thing is absolutely massive so you really need a large area for it - it’s not wide, but it’s incredibly long.
It arrives in 2 pieces and it comes with instructions so you can put it together but, literally, you just screw the legs on then clip the two parts together and you’re done. I was worried it would be flimsy but, somehow, clipping it together forms an almost solid steel bar.
If you don’t have room to leave it “open” you can just unclip it to store it in two parts against the wall and it’s well made enough that the clipping and unclipping probably wouldn’t damage it but, to be honest, if you do have room to leave it as is I would really recommend it because over time wear and tear at the join *could* affect its durability.
The seat is surprisingly comfortable - I remember using the rowing machine at the gym in my twenties and my bum being angry at me for days. Presumably over the years they’ve made them more comfortable, but you can order a specific seat cushion for it if your coccyx has words with you.
It’s good and quiet to use with just a fan that whooshes as you row, and the LCD screen tracks your speed, how far you’ve rowed and how long you’ve been rowing.
The LCD screen has myriad buttons on it, too, where you can program specific workouts including Racing mode and Games but we only use the Just Row option and then heave ho until our legs get a bit wibbly.
To be honest it, all a bit high-tech: you can connect it to various apps and monitors using Bluetooth and something called ANT+ (?) but we’re luddites who just want to go for a row in our front room.
It’s a bit like having an iPhone or an expensive camera - you know it does loads of fancy gubbins but you just need it for the basics and having a dabble with the gubbins is really, really fun but ultimately you always go back to the fundamentals.
And the thing is, the fundamentals of this thing are *amazing*. The rowing motion is smooth and sleek and, even as a bit of a chubber, it feels absolutely rock steady beneath me. It doesn’t even wobble.
Just quickly: on the flywheel there’s a dial that goes from 1 to 10 and I assumed that was the resistance. I actually put it to 10 because the resistance wasn’t increasing so I wondered if it was faulty. Have no fear, it isn’t broken! That dial doesn’t increase resistance, it’s a damper - essentially the higher the number, the heavier the boat you’re rowing. The instructions recommend setting it to between 3 and 5 to simulate a sleek, fast rowing experience.
So, is it with the money? My goodness YES. We went back and forth for a while because of the cost but it’s worth every single penny. This will be with us for years to come and not compromising on the quality is so worth it for something like this. It feels like a better piece of kit than the professional rowing machines I used to use in the gym... if you’re thinking of ordering it, don’t hesitate a single second. It’s absolutely bloody marvellous.
