Product Description
Just plug in a Victor Mini PestChaser and this high-tech device produces high frequency ultrasounds that repel rodents. As an added feature, the Mini PestChaser is also equipped with a new nightlight feature that provides a soft glow in the dark. The plug-in unit's mini size and discreet design make it ideal for all living areas in your home or business. Simply plug it into an outlet near entryways and it begins to produce a sound that drives mice, rats and other rodents crazy. The ultrasound, with over 80 oscillations per second, emitted at varying volumes and varying frequencies keep rodents from becoming used to the sound. The sound cannot be heard by humans or non-rodent pets such as cats, dogs, birds and fish. Users can experience a reduction in rodent activity in as little as 6 to 10 days. One unit typically provides 3 to 5 years of service. This package contains 3 Victor Mini PestChaser with Nightlight devices.

Got this PURELY because the low end of the ultrasonic frequency is 32 khz.
(Even with that one guy who almost burned down his house with this masterfully designed piezo electric speaker crammed into a plastic case.)
My apt's floors appear to me made out of screen door mesh and the walls are built out of termites holding hands together. Next time I'm going camping, I'm just going to rip off some of the siding for camp fire tinder.
That being said, not much I can do about the squirrels fornicating in my floorboards... Except put on some Barry Manilow and hope their babies turn out healthy.
Plugged it in, but wasn't sure if it was working or the squirrels went on vacation. So, unplugged it and waited for the delightful scratching, thumping, and seemingly rabies fueled screams of territorial battles to begin again.
Plugged this sucker back in.
The scratching stopped INSTANTLY. About 5 seconds later hear 2 or 3 of those furry squatters flee from my floor boards.
Based on the other reviews, I can imagine the size of the room, how fortified your walls are, and even just carpeting could limit its effectiveness.
For once, I'm glad I have thin floors, even if they have induced a crippling fear of falling through at any moment.
I will be unplugging this thing every night....
This experience tells me that if you've got mice in your house you have the following options:
1. Prevent them from getting in. Easier said that done since they can get through the smallest of cracks, or make their own entries.
2. Catch them with mouse traps.
3. Hope that deterrents like this work, but place them at the likely point of entry. My concern is that if you put an area off limits by using a deterrent in that area, then they'll just go somewhere else in your house. You really want them gone from everywhere, not just moving around.
Ironically, I can't say whether this product works or not. The mice didn't move into my attic with the ultrasonic installed, even when they were visiting, so that's something. On the other hand, the traps and webcam don't lie.
But I dont' think it's a good idea for inside your house. I tried a few many years ago, but the ultrasonic waves don't penetrate sheet rock and the high frequencies are readily absorbed by any non-reflective surface. I also tried them in my basement, lots of stone reflectivity. But I think all that does is encourage the mice to nest in your walls... a bad idea. Or, they get used to the sound. In my basement I still have an occasional mouse problem, I'm using good old snap traps, poison for a backup (but I'm no longer a fan of poison since the EPA recently forced a formulation change on all manufacturers, which IMHO can possibly attract more mice, at the very least it causes a much slower death) and I'm about to try an electronic shock-type trap. This is after spending proably about 7 days this summer, trying to plug every hole, making a wire mesh boundary along the foundation and/or 4" of pea gravel 36" out from the foundation around the entire perimeter, etc. Not a fun job but I'm determined to keep them out fo my basement, a tough challenge for my 200 year old farmhouse with a 3' thick stone foundation. The snow hit before I could block the underside of the vinyl siding, another favorite entry point, so it's hard to say where those rascals are getting in. I did see a mouse go in a hole just outside my pea gravel, which is 36" out. The experts say they won't tunnel that far. But sure enough I caught one that night.
All my work has reduced the number of mice by a lot, I'm down to maybe one every 1-2 weeks, sometimes longer. My advice boils down to this:
1. Eliminate ALL entryways... PERMANENTLY... with something non-chewable (1/4" hardware cloth, flashing, or stone or concrete). You can plug holes with copper mesh and great stuff. They're attracted to heat in the winter and will figure out how to get in if your cracks and holes aren't sealed properly. Eliminate food and water sources. These steps should be your first line of defense.
2. You have to kill them. You will never encourage them to stay away. They breed faster than you can imagine.
3. Where you catch one, there are probably many, many more. Take a "shock and awe" approach and stay on top of checking them and resetting every day, and use a lot of traps. Doing it one or two at a time doesn't work.
Hope this helps.
