I tend to budget and look for good value for money but have had an eye on the Marshall Bluetooth speakers for a while. I also play the guitar and my husband is British so I was drawn to an historic British brand like Marshall. And I especially like the retro guitar amp styling of their bluetooth speaker range. Aesthetically speaking, it goes well with our hardwood floors and mix of classic modern, vintage and antique style furnishings.
I was originally going to get the Stanmore which seems like the best bang for your buck. But everything I read suggested I would be disappointed. When I brought this up with my other half I was surprised that they were ok but only if we were to spend almost double to get the one I really wanted.
Anyway, when the Woburn arrived I was very happy with the physical appearance and build quality. It appeared to be everything I hoped for and was also pretty heavy which means that it probably has good quality speakers with big heavy magnets inside. I was a little anxious because my expectations were high and I wasn’t sure how a pair of 5” woofers would produce the kind of range I am used to from the Sub.
I needn’t have worried. The Woburn is an amazing speaker and sounds perfect (as far as I am concerned) in almost every way.
Sound
It is LOUD, I actually have it on 2 out of 10 volume on the speaker which is the master volume and tweak from the device or computer I am playing from. To get the fullest sound with the broadest range without going muddy I found the best settings for my tastes was 7 Bass and 7 treble which produces the full range, from deep low rumbling bass that causes rattles around the room to the minutest details in the treble. The rest can be tweaked on your device using an equalizer.
Initially, I found the bluetooth signal a bit weak from my android phone compared to the signal I was getting from a wired device. It really helps to get one of the premium audio apps that offer high end features to get a better signal. I went with Poweramp app for Android. That app has both an equalizer and Pre Amp feature that lets you boost the output signal to match a physical cable. I’m not sure why the initial Bluetooth signal seemed somewhat muted unless it’s to save battery power on the phone or tablet.
A coiled 3.5mm aux cable that comes with the speaker is very nice. It looks a lot like an old coiled guitar cable with a flexible spring collar to prevent kinking coming out the back of knurled gold plugs. With it, the output was strong and didn’t need a preamp.
From my desktop computer I have it hooked up with the digital optical toslink connector. It might be a placebo effect, or just the expensive soundcard in my PC but it sounds the best of all.
The speaker’s relatively compact size means that even though it is stereo the soundstage it projects is quite narrow and directional. For the desktop computer I ended up getting a small speaker to place directly in front to act as an accent speaker and thus widen the soundstage. The Woburn still does most of the work; the accent speaker just widens the mids and highs to surround a bit more because I have the Woburn on a table to my far right.
Conclusion
The Woburn is a truly amazing speaker. It really does produce deep and punchy bass and very crisp high detail which projects very warm and colorful midrange. It’s the closest thing to an audiophile I have heard. This is the case even with MP3’s where a lot of detail can be lost and unstruments might merge and sound seem a bit muddy. The Woburn lets you pick out separate instruments very clearly and voices sound extremely real, rich and resonant with lots of fine detailing that in my experience often gets lost. I haven’t listened to Queen in several years and was quite startled to hear all the subtle voicing in A Winter Tale; was astonished really. And it’s been the same with everything I listen to, be it a voice, guitar or a full blown orchestra. Classical, Opera, Rock, Metal, 80’s Pop, Punk, Grunge, Folk, Jazz--it all sounds great.
It didn’t take long for me to relocate my Denon and Polk setup. Now our study just has the Marshall Woburn center back of the study and a small accent speaker in front of my desktop to widen the stage somewhat. I am truly impressed and feel privileged to have such a lovely sounding speaker. It is expensive and filled me with apprehension when we first ordered it. Three months later it’s been paid off and we love it, no regrets whatsoever.

“I like the way old things look, but I like the way new things work!” The Marshall Woburn on top of my kitchen cabinet looks vintage and darn right cool! It’s marketed towards the rock, hard rock and metal appeal due to the iconic Marshall name marquee placed just so on the center. I have friends who play in bands and have a Marshall stacks. The Woburn knobs, on/off switch, control panel and lighting feel as similar to the real-thing. I listen to mostly rock and Jazz – with some Sinatra, Willie Nelson and Johnny Cash on the side. I’ve also listened to R&B Beyoncé and Classical Chopin and Bernstein. From my listening variety the Woburn truly sounds amazing! The Bluetooth setup is incredibly easy – less finicky than the Bose – and very simple. The 4-inputs are fantastic (go to Marshall website and read all the specs). This set is a Stereo unit, not Mono. It boasts 2-5.25” woofer drivers, and 2-1” dome tweeters. The rear of the console has 2-baffles to provide sound venting and extra bass push.
Pros:
1. Looks Cool, if you’re into the rock motif.
2. Well-built cabinet and controls.
3. Sounds incredible
4. 4-types of inputs + Bluetooth capable. I mainly use BT
5. Simple to use knobs, switch and set up
Cons
1. Very heavy (go to website and see specs) this is NOT a portable unit. However I will be placing this in my back yard during get-togethers, etc. Portability was not a factor to me.
2. No Airplay or complex apps to control and add pre-programmed radio stations, etc. This was not important to me. I prefer the simple BT
3. The look may turn-off some folks. As mentioned: the cabinet appeals to the rock fans.
4. No remote. I use my device as the remote controller; however you have to manually adjust everything else. Again, not important to me – I like playing/adjusting the knobs.
5. Your neighbors are gonna hate you!!!
Why I DID NOT buy the Bose Soundtouch 30. Note: They’re approximately the same price during the time of this review and sound reasonably the same. Bose is a bit muddier. Sonically, the sound is not drastically different, based on my ears.
1. I did not want to have another airplay device – for my application, I prefer BT
2. No analog bass/treble adjustment, very typical Bose
3. I have no need for pre-programmed channels and the complexity of an app-loaded control on my device – all my channels are on my Mac devices already - no 3rd party app required
4. The ST30 looks good, but for me, the Marshall looked so much better
5. The Marshall is much clearer on higher volumes.
Hope my review helps you with your purchasing decisions!
UPDATE: 90-days later. The Woburn has been thoroughly "broken-in". I have not pushed this above five - keeping my macbook pro at 80% the volume. Mids and highs are very sharp - very appealing to my ears (may differ from yours). I listened to Jeff Beck live at Ronnie Scotts via BT, and it sounds amazing!
MINOR GLITCHES: the primary source for me has been my late-2013 macbook pro using itunes at 256mbs. Soon after each iOS update, the paring connection appears to cut-in-and-out, as if the BT was not properly paired. SOLUTION: Disconnect the Woburn BT connection from the laptop - and once again re-connect/pair. This solves the problem quite nicely. This has happened 3-time already... right after an iOS update.
Top reviews from other countries
I am a bit biased because I am a huge Marshall fan. It does not disappoint. Quality , ease of use and flat out rockin sound. Does it replace my Kilburn? No, my Kilburn has a beautiful sound and can I can bring it anywhere, and I do. Did I need this?..not really. The Kilburn fulfills all my necessities, but the Woburn is the biggest and loudest of the Marshall line up, and worth every penny.

PRODUCT REVIEW:
The Woburn is a loud beast with Excellent sound quality and perfect build. For me personally SQ is A balanced and neutral sound. So this review or the speaker won’t work for hip hop/trance/Bollywood/edm fans.
Connect it to a good audio source like a fiio x3 with good FLAC files and the difference is very evident. The mids vocals and guitars are very forward. Guitars and snare appear gritty enough when metal is played. Instrument separations and transparency is gorgeous for the price. Where as if you wanna play vocal performances like Indian classical this won’t fail you. Treble is delivered smooth like the way you want in a controlled fashion with its twin ferro cooled tweeters. The twin 50w parallel powered woofers extends the bass to sub freqs only when required. Only issue is there is a slight boominess on mid bass when records like tools 10000 days is played. But you can control that with the simple bass/treble adjustments. Other than that anything like tool, led zeppelin, sabbath are presented in a warm tone and with neat dynamic range. There has been so many reports of amp not powering on and Bluetooth woes. Hopefully none of them strikes me. Will post an update after few months of use.
