If you’re looking for the BEST bamboo kendama on the market, buy the Kotaro Kendama brand. Made of laminated bamboo parts, Kotaro Kendamas are designed for high level kendama play.

With enough practice, you’ll be doing all your favorite tricks like Oozara (big cup), Kozara (small cup), Chuuzara (base cup) and Rousoku (candle). Use grips like the Sara (or Pen) Grip, the Ken Grip, the Tama Grip or the Rousoku Grip.

The deluxe Kotaro Kendama model comes with a bamboo ball (the tama or dama), a pre-strung length of string, and the Ken, or handle with three cups. Also comes with one extra string! They were historically a Japanese skill toy.

Improve your hand eye coordination, speed up your reflexes and improve your balancing techniques. As you learn how to use the kendama better and better, you’ll build skills like patience and focus and enter the magical state of flow. Named After Fuma Kotaro, the Japanese ninja. Some people mistakenly call them cadoma, cadama, kentama, kandamas, kindamas and kondoma or kondomas.

Highly recommended! We bought two of these for Christmas gifts, for a 12-year-old boy and 10-year-old-girl. The bamboo is very resilient to the constant collisions that are inevitable, and the string has shown no signs of weakening either. There isn't much else to say about the physical characteristics, but the entertainment factor was more than I expected.

No exaggeration, the kids spent at least a couple of hours playing with these every day for the next week, and the whole family still plays with them 3 months later. They sit in the living room and will catch my eye every so often and I just have to try again. Guests enjoy trying their hand at it as well. It doesn't take long before you start getting the hang of it and getting cocky. The family all thought we were doing pretty well until my Japanese sister-in-law decided to embarrass us. :) Of course, searching online for videos of people playing will make you feel even less skillful. I highly recommend it though—you will be amazed at the talent and inspired to keep practicing.

Like some others, I became curious when I saw a kendama in a TV show. At the time this one was selling for $10, which seemed (just) worth trying. I’m glad I did. There are a lot of much more complicated (and expensive) kendamas out there, but for a casual user like me, who just wants to improve their hand eye coordination, this small, unpainted kendama is perfect. Out of curiosity, I actually bought a Kendama USA piece, with much larger cups, a longer string, and special paint, but I prefer this one. If you want to perform the many impressive advanced tricks, you’ll probably want a fancy kendama. But I’m happy tossing the tama between cups, spiking, and the occasional “airplane.”
