A spectacular option for keeping your yard shaded from the sun

A spectacular option for keeping your yard shaded from the sun
When you see the pictures for this on Amazon, you do not fully comprehend just how wide this shade covering is. At over sixteen feet, it is quite large. As a result, it provides shade for a huge area. The higher up you hang this, the wider the shade spread down below is. I have used tarps and umbrellas to help shade our picnic table in the past (we actually cut a hole in our picnic table just for this reason a couple of years ago). This covers substantially more space. There are periods of the day where the sun is low enough in the sky that it can angle beneath the umbrella and still make sitting at the table uncomfortable. This guy is wide enough that we never see that issue really. By the time the sun is low enough to get underneath the impressive span of this covering, trees and buildings on the horizon are blotting it out.Not only is the covering large, but it is also incredibly durable. The material lets you stretch it out and make the covering quite taut. That being said, there is some give to it, which means you do not have to be incredibly precise with how you are hanging it up. I used a combination of long, thick tree branches in front of my house and some large eye hook hangers that were already attached to my house (usually used to hang Christmas decorations in the winter). If you take a look at the picture I attached, you can see the sheet is made up a sort of mesh/slightly overlapping design. This is great because it keeps the light out, but it has the necessary porous design to let water drip through. I would not advise trying to wait out a thunderstorm in this, because it is not a flat, waterproof tarp. Considering the size of this thing, it would be a disaster if it allowed water to pool in the middle. It would no doubt sag and possibly cause damage to whatever it was attached to.Because of this surface, you can hang it relatively flat to the ground. That being said, I did find it advantageous to hang it at somewhat of an angle, since running it perpendicular to the ground also caused the middle section to sag very slightly. I opted for the green color (big lawn, lots of trees, it blended nicely). The only bit of additional upkeep I see myself needing to perform between now and when I take it down for winter is that it might begin to collect sticks on it that fall off of the trees nearby on particularly windy days. One more nice touch to mention about this unit is the transparent carrying case it comes in. The case can be sealed shut and has a rope handle, making storage and transportation easy. Thankfully the case is not skin tight to the covering, but anyone who has ever tried to pack a sleeping bag or tent back into its original case knows that these things come out far easier than they go in. All in all, a great shade covering for almost any yard - as long as you have something to hang it from.

It blocks sun. It does let water through, which is obviously intentional since water would pool in the middle otherwise. You have to get it pretty high on at least one side for a 6ft tall person to be able to stand up in the middle. My garage and fence was not enough. You really need one side to be at 10+ feet and the other to be at 8+ feet for a normal man to be able to stand up straight in the middle (I improvised by attaching additional 2x4s to my fence post). And yes, the tension is extremely tight, but this is cloth.

This product is great! The product came very quickly, and I loved the fact that it came in a nice zip up carrying bag (see photo). I plan on using that for storage when winter hits and we have to take it down.
The size we ordered was slightly too wide for our deck, so my husband ended up building a frame with 2x4s to extend the shade over. I included pics so you can see what I'm talking about. The installation was super easy once we had that part done. The kit doesn't actually come with any clips or screw eyes to attach it, I might recommend to the manufacturer to include some of those in the kit, but the shade is pretty versatile and there's a variety of ways you could install it. We attached it to the overhang of our house with screw eyes and clips, and then attached to the lower part of our deck with screw eyes and paracord (pics included). It should be extremely easy to take down when windy weather hits (just undo the clips and be on your way!
We've had it up for a full day and it works really well! Normally our back deck gets super hot but it still feels cool out there and its midday! Great product!

We bought this for our deck since the other options for some shade were extremely expensive - awnings, pergola, etc. We waited two years before reviewing so our review would have some significant experience to go with it.

First some notes. We bought mounting hardware separately since we we concerned about how sturdy kit hardware would be. We mounted hooks for attaching 3 corners of the sail to the house, and installed a 4x4 post (very well supported) for the remaining corner. We attached turnbuckles to two adjacent corners of the sail so we can adjust the sail to be good and taut. Finally, we do not leave the sail up all the time, and never in snow season. I don't think we have left it up for more than a week at once. If we have high winds or thunderstorms forecast, down it goes. It takes about 2-3 minutes for one person to put it up, about 5 minutes to take it down, including folding and storing (in a chest on the deck). So we have been taking good care of it.

After two years, the sail has not stretched at all - it has probably shrunk a tiny bit, but less than an inch in any direction. It looks as good as new, having neither faded nor degraded, as far as we can tell. Since we set it up, we have spent far more time on the deck. This is definitely a two-fer. The whole notion of using a sail for shade is a great one, and so is this particular sail. It looks to be a long time before we need to replace this one, but we'll definitely replace it with the same.

Easy to put up with the corners already having the rings attached. With the corners placed how they are, it's very convenient for placing on an area that isn't completely flat or level. Covers my patio nicely. Texture of the product is smooth & strong, nothing like the tacky, easy to tear, material you get from a tool store. Placed it up right after receiving it, & had a bit of rain & a nice pick up of wind & it withheld. Only thing to mention, that is a more of a positive to me, then a negative, is that after placing it, it will stretch.
