Weight CapacityBecause winches are designed to handle weight, not length, the first essential when looking for a winch is its weight rating. The Seachoice 1-speed 800 lb. winch is ideal for dinghies and inflatables. Heavier loads like sport boats and center-consoles will require something more robust, like the Seachoice 2-speed 2,000 lb. or 3,000 lb. winch. And don’t forget to factor in the weight of your engine(s), fuel and other equipment! More on that below. |
Features & ConstructionManual winches have one simple job: to multiply your strength in order to move heavy loads on or off your boat trailer. This is done most efficiently with a planetary gear system, 1- or 2-way ratchet and a long handle with a comfortable grip – all features of Seachoice’s popular line of trailer winches. Add to that all heavy-duty, zinc-plated steel construction for excellent corrosion resistance. |
AccessoriesAll Seachoice trailer winches come equipped with a heavy-duty, 2-inch-wide nylon strap at a length of 16 or 25 feet. Nylon straps won’t rust or kink and spool cleaner onto the drum than wire cables. At the end of our straps is a zinc-plated, forged steel winch hook with 5/8-inch throat and spring-loaded snap closure. Finally, our winch handles can be quickly detached and safely stowed when transporting the boat trailer, and feature a roller grip for easier operation. |
Choosing a Trailer Winch: Gross Weight
When choosing a trailer winch, the first consideration is its weight rating. The rule of thumb is to buy a winch rated to handle 50-75% of the gross weight of the load – that is, the dry weight of the boat plus the engine(s), fuel and other equipment. For example, a 20-foot deck or sport boat (3,000 lb.) with one outboard engine (500 lb.), and a full tank of gas (252 lb.) will require a 2,000 lb. or heavier winch (3,752 lb. gross weight X 0.5 = 1,876 lb.). When it comes to winches, bigger is always better so if you’re unsure about your calculations then always err on the winch with the higher weight rating.
Choosing a Trailer Winch: Carpeted Bunks or Rollers
After weight, the second consideration when choosing a trailer winch is the type of boat supports on your trailer. Carpeted bunk boards will put significantly more frictional resistance on the winch than rollers, so if you have bunk boards then you may want to go with a winch that can handle no less than 75% of the gross weight.
Choosing a Trailer Winch: Boat Ramp Incline
In addition to weight and friction, gravity will also play a role in the amount of resistance on your winch, so it’s a good idea to take into account the steepness of your favorite boat ramp. Obviously, a steeper incline will require more power so do your arm a favor and consider one of our 2-speed winches. These winches have two gear ratios: 4.1:1 for faster winching, and 8:1 for slower winching with a lot more power.
Choosing a Trailer Winch: Additional Straps
Your trailer winch isn’t designed to secure the boat to your trailer. Always connect the safety latch to the bow eye and make sure all tie-down straps are attached and tightened before heading out on the road. Seachoice adjustable Transom Tie-Down Straps (model 51121) and Premium Gunwale Tie-Down Straps (models 51051, 51071 and 51091) won’t let you down. They feature heavy-duty webbing in standard lengths, plus corrosion-resistant quick-release buckles and zinc-plated hooks at both ends.
