This creates really trippy light shows that can easily light up my bedroom ceiling which is 11'x17'!! I recommend taking off the dome (it unscrews easily) and this makes the LED lights much sharper.
I'm a 20-something college student and for me this way the lights are much more fun. If you want to use it as a soft nightlight for your kid it's probably best to leave the dome on which makes a sort of underwater/cloudy effect.
It runs on a 1-hour timer and then shuts itself off. It has several types of programmed lighting it can do: red laser with green+blue light, just red laser, just green, just blue, alternating, etc.
a WARNING...for the love of all that is holy, do NOT look into the lights if the dome is unscrewed! It has red lasers and insanely bright LED's and if you're in a dark room and this is your only light source, this can blind you for a good 30 seconds if you look straight into it. Don't let your kids play with this. It is also very light weight and cheap-plastic feeling, so if you have kids, make sure you keep it somewhere where they can't throw it around, because I feel like this could break pretty easily.
It also comes with an Aux-In to connect a phone or iPod to it to play music, as it has a built-in speaker. This is NOT worth it. It sounds like an old 1920s phonograph, no bass, cheap sound.
I just use it as a light show thing to impress my easily-impressed fellow 20-somethings and for just chilling listening to music on a (better) speaker.
Given it's price this is a pretty good product if you just use the lights. I've had it for 6 months now and it still works fine.
