The TB330 troy-bilt mower arrived today. Having spent 51 years on this planet and pretty much been cutting a lawn every week since I was 11 this is the first self propelled lawn mower I have ever owned or used. Seeing others who owned them it always seemed they were prone to problems and I always just went with regular push mowers. I am no kicking myself I didn't buy a self propelled mower sooner. Not having to push is so much better!
The mower arrived in the promised time. The box and packaging was adequate and not issues even though it was on its side by the delivery person. I followed the instructions to assemble the mower and it was no problem. Added the oil and fuel and it started up right away. It was easy to adjust the height or the blades. The self propulsion of this mower is so great. Really I can't believe I've spent sp many hours pushing a heavy mower. I should have gotten one of these years ago. Even without engaging the drive it is as easy or even easier to just push this one than my old 21" craftsman push mower. I feel using this self propelled mower for the first time is among the top three experiences I have ever had in my life. Well, thats exaggerating but using this machine was amazing and made cutting the lawn so much easier. I had to turn the drive speed from 3 that it was set at out of the box to 2. I'll try it in the future but position 3 and 4 must really make this mower go. So my experience so far just from it arriving today and my using it for the first time I am so far extremely pleased with this mower. So as of now first day I and my experience so far I would totally recommend this mower and I really like it.

MY SPECIFIC SITUATION

I bought this to supplement my riding mower on a 3/4 acre yard. I use it only in those spaces where the
riding mower cannot go. For example I have some tight spaces as well as some steep hills where I cannot take the rider.

PROS

The wash port - After every mow, I use the wash port to clean the underside of the mower. This keeps
the underside free of debris and will hopefully extend the life of the mower.

The "no oil change" engine - The manufacturer states that there is never a need to change the oil in this
engine. The only thing to do is to add oil. Troy Bilt does use a variety of engines, some that require
oil changes some that don't. Just something to be aware of, as not all mowers have the no oil change feature.

Self propel - I do use this on steeper hills (20 degree incline) and I really like that the mower will push itself right
up the hill. On flatter grass I don't engage the self propel, as the mower is easy enough to push.

Single lever height adjustment - allows easy switching among four or five different cutting heights.

CONS

The packaging could be a little better. The mower was delivered inside of a torn, beat up box. I was afraid that the mower
would be damaged, but after opening the box I saw that the mower was fine.

OTHER THOUGHTS

So far I have started the mower about a dozen times. On all but one of those, the mower started on either the first or second pull. The one time when I had difficulty, I had to pull it a dozen times. Hopefully this doesn't happen too often.

Another reviewer said that the handle was problematic, but I have not had any problems with the handle. It seems sturdy and well built to me.

Overall I am happy with the mower and would definitely buy again!

I still really like the mower and maintain the 5 star rating. I have learned a couple of things:

1. Over time the mechanism for the self propel loosens up and therefore the self propel doesn't work as well. I was getting frustrated with this and took a look at the manual for a fix. It turns out there is a fix! On the underside of the black box that contains the self propel triggers, there is a little wheel that you can turn to tighten or loosen the self propel mechanism. Just got this delivered today. Easy assembly. Pretty much just have to assemble the handle. Put the oil provided in and filled it with gas. Pulls easily and started on the first pull. Love the self-propelled. First one I have owned. Has 4 speeds and even on 1 it is powerful. Love how you can attach the side discharge chute on the mower handle when using mulch or the bag. Also very easy to adjust height with the single lever adjustment. Can't wait to actually cut with it. Also love the hose attachment so you can wash the undercarriage. It is a little on the heavy side, but it seems to be well built. The speed adjustment is plastic so hopefully it holds up over time. Highly recommend this. I give it 4 1/2 stars only because I haven't cut with it yet and like I said It is a little heavy. Will write another review after I actually cut with it.

The rear-wheel drive and all wheels' axles also require re-lubrication frequently to avoid rapid wear. Single-lever cutting height control (you must pick up back of mower while moving the height lever)--changing blade height for all four wheels is quick and easy. Speed selector has several speeds. Drive belt can be changed fairly easily. Engine speed is entirely automatic. Periodic maintenance: when gas tank is nearly empty, remove engine cover, pull-started assembly, gas tank, air intake and filter; plug carburetor intakes; wash off surfaces; blow dry with blower; empty gas tank contents into bottle; re-assemble. Discard removed gas. Oil change requires a pump sold as accessory (works efficiently). Pump must be cleaned off (messy) after use and stored in plastic bag with tubes. Blade adapter mount is strong, does not fracture. Always have sharp, balanced blade for good performance in mowing. This mower has a heavy frame and engine and is not intended to be pushed--the handle attachment is not meant for that level of strain. Turning the unit sharply (as in a 180-degree change of direction) requires pushing down on handle to pick up from wheels while turning. Going up sudden incline requires tilting the mower, shifting weight to back wheels of mower to avoid blade hitting the ground. Used and cared for with skill, this unit will be adequate. It is good for smaller yards where a riding mower is too large. The rear wheels lack deep treads and mower does not move well on hills or slippery grass; wheel treads wear down very rapidly requiring replacement.
