At the price these were going for when I got it, it's a no brainer. Just get it and play. There are better radios and there are supposed to be dual banders on the way, but why wait and why early adopt when these are so affordable? This is the one to have -until- that perfect radio is available at a price you're willing to pay.
Be warned though - be prepared to find and use a "code plug." A code plug is a configuration file that can be loaded into the radio and -boom- the radio is set up and ready to go, except for radio Id for the DMR aspect. For example, rmham dot org has code plugs for a number of radios including this one, but is intended for the rocky mountain area. The TYT configuration software simply read the file and then wrote the configuration to the radio. You'll want to add your own "channels" "zones" and scan lists. Here, a channel is just the parameters for contacting a repeater or other radio.
Anyways - out of the box the thing was a mysterious brick. The first DMR QSO came 15 minutes later after installing the software and uploading the code plug. It's that simple if you let it be that simple. Note - I did spend a bunch of time reading up on DMR before ordering the radio.
Software oddness - it is distributed as a "rar" archive. Windows 10 does not understand that format. I used 7-zip to unpack the rar. Also, I grabbed the most recent software from TYT (tyt888 dot com) instead of using the supplied optical disk. That said, this is pretty good radio programming software. It could be better and I'd love to send a wish list to TYT, but it is pretty easy to use. Especially after loading the code plug because the code plug is a working sample and a great starting point.
It's nice that the TYT software is good. Last I checked, Chirp can't program this radio. Also, I doubt this radio can be programmed from the key pad. Certainly not without huge frustration.
Programming cable oddness - the programming cable that came with the TYT MD380 seems to be incompatible with my Boafeng UV-5R.
I had previously gave a little listen on the Brandmeister Hoseline and wasn't terribly impressed with the audio but chalked that up to the internet in general. When I got the radio I build a quick code plug for the 17 talk grounds available on one of the local repeaters. (The local group has a dozen repeaters blanketing most of the Southern portion of the Central Valley of California. Even a few low level repeaters filling in downtown areas for great HT coverage.
Then I updated the regular firmware. I looked at the instructions a little for building the experimental firmware but didn't feel like installing the build environment. Then I found someone who was distribution built firmware images. SCORE! Some of that stuff is cool, and some I have no clue what it's for or how to use it.
So I've had a couple contacts so far. The audio is generally pretty good, but it still lacks something compared to good old analog FM I'm used to. (Now I sound like I'm an OM, but I'm not.) Sometimes the audio gets flaky and drops. Sometimes it's so clear you can't even tell when the person unkeys.
If you're looking to try a new mode, I think this is a great radio. Great price. Now let's see some decent price mobiles!
Fit and finish are very good. It's robustly constructed with thick plastic case. Keys have firm feel and you hear a click as key is pressed. Battery engages firmly and smoothly. Unit slips snugly into charging base but requires several (like 8) hours to fully charge. Battery life is good. Buy a second battery when you order this as they are very reasonably priced. Display is pleasing and bright indoors, but is difficult to read in bright sunlight. Transmitted and received audio is crisp and clean. Unit feels good (but not great) in your hand.
There is third party software that adds many features to this radio and tremendously improves its value. You will be doing yourself a disservice by not using the third part software.
I finally had the radio programmed and select the local system and throw my call sign out there, but no one comes back. I think it is working because the light is green and not red. So I bump it up to the county level system and again no one comes back. I keep going up until I am world wide and no one comes back. I started to get a bit frustrated and left the radio on the local system for days and didn't hear a thing until about a week later. As soon as he un-keyed, I threw my call-sign out there and asked for a radio check. It worked! I was so excited to finally know this DMR radio was working.
Then something funny started happening. As I would be listening, the radio's display went blank and the buttons became unresponsive. I turned it off and back on and it would work for a bit more but eventually it would do the same thing. It got more and more frequent to know there's something really wrong with this radio. I returned it to Amazon and haven't replaced it.
