I searched high and low for the right car seat. I felt like Goldilocks, those were too hard, these were too soft...except I didn't find any that were too soft. Most of them were hard as a rock. Granted, a baby isn't that heavy, so it's not like she needs loads of padding, but she doesn't need to be strapped into a seat that makes an electric chair look comfy. I could imagine her head getting knocked around every time I hit a pothole or, in the case of my Prius, an insect. Not fun.
This seat is about as comfortable as a couple of the other high end car seats. I would ask my little girl, but by the time I'm done strapping her in she's sawing wood. Yes, I'd say it's comfortable.
It's also beefy. There's plenty of protection around here, enough so that I kinda wish they'd make a full size one for me...Prius, remember? It is very well made, and you can feel the high quality materials and workmanship that went into this. Since the most precious thing in the whole world will be sitting there, I want to know she's as safe as can be in a vehicle. I rest easy with her in this seat.
If you find yourself transporting various aged/sized 'babyforms', you'll really like how this allows for easy and quick adjustments. Most of the foam inserts come right out, the headrest pulls right up or down with a squeeze of the top handle, and the harness adjusts with the strap in front. It sounds like I'm an expert, but I couldn't find the instructions when I finally got to use it, so I was whacking and yanking it around like a caveman. Finally I figured it out, and it is indeed simple. I don't take stars off for my own brain cramps.
Apparently the straps are yummy, as she starts gnawing on them until I get her buckled in.
Be forewarned, this thing is Heavy. This is one car seat you really want to stick in the car and leave there until the little ones are off to college...then keep it anyway for the grandkids. I'm not a weak dude, and more importantly, a master at leverage, so I appear much stronger than I really am. Even so, I'm not taking it out of the car unless I have to.
It's also big. Not a problem when facing forward, but facing to the rear, you'll have to move the front seat forward a bit...especially in a Prius.
It does, however, fit into a Prius. It's supposed to be behind the front passenger seat, which is fortunate, because that seat is about 8 inches forward from the rear most position with the car seat installed. I would be mighty uncomfortable if it were behind my seat, but I'm 6'4". If you or your passengers are short, it shouldn't be a problem.
Since it's for my girl, I got the pink one. Alright, Graco has women working there, so the name of the color is Spring Muave or Stardust Fuchsia or some such thing. It's pink. And it looks good for a girl...or a boy. After all, my daughter is far too young to announce her gender identity, so I should just refer to her as "Babyform" or "Gender-in-flux humanoid" rather than bigoted, sexist terms like "her" and "daughter."
Ah, maybe I'll let the next generation handle that. For now, She is my Daughter.
Anywho, this isn't my first one. I bought the exact same thing a few months ago, and I used it with my friend's kids with no trouble. Sadly, my daughter never got a chance to use that one (custody dispute). Fortunately, she wasn't in it, or the car at all, when some guy tried to mate his Jeep with my Prius...with predictable results. My insurance company said they'd pay for a replacement if I felt the old one was unsafe, and since my ability to see hairline cracks and other subtle damage is, well, isn't, I opted to replace it. The price even went down some since I bought the last one.
I like the ability to use this for several years. Not only will that save money, but it's safer, as I don't have to learn different systems and such.
Highly Recommend!
The seat installed fairly easily once we understood where the connectors were in the Rav4 we put it into. It tightens up to the seat easily and quickly with a pull harness on one side.
Putting the baby into the seat is easy and the belts tighten around him with a pull on the pull tab. You push down on a button and hold while pulling out on the chest belts and the belts loosen, then you can unbuckle and remove baby easily.
When baby is seating in the seat (he was 4 months when we got it and is now 6 months), it fits around him nicely with a removable head support to keep his head from bopping around with the motion of the vehicle. It is nicely padded and he appears to have plenty of growing room, which you would expect. The angle of his body in the seat appears to be comfortable, but is not conducive to bottle feeding while going down the road, even with an adult sitting beside him holding the bottle. As the bottle empties, it is difficult to raise it high enough for the milk to flow and still keep the nipple in his mouth.
As baby got taller, the height of the belts was adjusted quickly and easily by the handy release at the top of the seat back. We did not have to take the seat out of the vehicle to adjust the belts as we did with the Graco Click-connect 35.
We installed the seat into a 2008 Rav4 Sport. With the seat installed, two average-sized people - one on each side - can still sit in the backseat comfortably enough, though there isn't much wiggle room.
My husband, my daughter (baby's mother) and I all really like the car seat. It is extremely durable looking and feeling, heavy duty, and easy to use. We will see how it fits and endures as our baby grows up with it. Only time will tell the real practicality, functionality and durability of the seat. For now, we think it was a great choice and would buy it again.
At first, I was unsure if I wanted to purchase these car seats, as there are other less expensive options out there. After purchasing my first Graco 4Ever car seat 4 years ago, I became a believer and saw the cost effectiveness of the seat, since it grows with the child. It has inserts to help support younger children, and has the ability to adjust the headrest height to accommodate growth. The seat also converts from a back-facing car seat to a front-facing seat, and finally to a booster seat. I also went ahead and purchased this car seat for my in-laws and parents who take care of my children, as the seats are not only versatile, but are incredibly safe.
After the infant bucket seat, this is the last car seat that needs to be purchased, and it is well worth the price. The fabric of the seat is very durable and is also easily removed and can be thrown in the washing machine, which is a life-saver! I cannot recommend this car seat highly enough!
