The HDMI Out from the receiver goes into my television - this provides the signal from the three HDMI devices. The Video TV Monitor Out goes into the Video Input on my television - this handles the signal from the three devices that use RCA cables. To use the three HDMI devices, the TV input source is HDMI and for the three non-HDMI devices, I use the TV's AV input. In all cases, the receiver is used for sound. I have a Bose 2.1 speaker system, but the subwoofer does not have a separate input, but rather filters the lower frequencies from the L/R channels itself. Thus, I am not using the subwoofer outputs on the receiver. I have not tried the Bluetooth capability yet and don't expect to be a heavy user of that feature, if at all, although it is nice to have. My family does not tend to sit in front of the boob tube for long periods of time, switching sources, and watching for hours on end and so I don't really use the front panel source switches muchl, although I can see those could be handy for some people.
I liked the included microphone used for setting up your sonic environment. I have not experimented with that, but I certainly like the idea. It was easy to use and gave me a warm fuzzy that audio settings were optimized for the space our media center is in.
Bottom line: At $229 it's a great receiver. At $279, perhaps not so much. 5 HDMI ports allows for expansion. It has features that I'm not using and so can't judge any audio characteristics for systems that use more than stereo speakers and a subwoofer, but the sound is good, "feel" like it well built when using the controls, and looks great.
UPDATE: I have noticed far fewer random handshake errors with HDMI lately. I don't know if Denon transparently pushes updates through the app to the AVR but it would seem that way because I have noticed an improvement and I don't believe this issue was going to just work itself out. This device has been working far better for me in the last month or so. Many people probably won't come back to update their reviews like I did so keep that in mind when reading the plethora of "this thing is buggy" reviews. Good job Denon.

Denon app that turns my iPhone into a remote is pretty decent also.
Pros:
- Price (excellent quality for a low price)
- Effective and easy room calibration (it sounds great and adjusts to the room with auto-calibration)
- All the basic features (it has bluetooth for wireless connection, passive passthrough for watching while receiver is off, single HDMI output from receiver to TV, 4k 2.2HDCP compliant inputs; required to play MOST 4K content on a 4k tv)
- 5.2 connections (5 speakers, 2 subwoofers)
- 5 HDMI inputs (2 for 4K, 3 for 1080P) and other analog inputs like RCA
Cons:
- No ARC (meaning you'll have to connect the TV to the receiver (with coaxial or optical cable) if you want to play sounds directly from the TV to speakers)
- No network connectivity (so no music streaming apps, etc)
- Bluetooth screen doesn't show any song details, (like title, album, artists, etc), only name of connected device
If you're new to home theatre or whether you've had older receivers (without 4k features, many HDMI connections, and bluetooth). This receiver is worthy for your first home theatre experience or a worthy upgrade to an old receiver with lesser features, especialyl for the relatively low price
