Zircon MetalliScanner m40

The MetalliScanner m40 quickly and easily detects metal in wood, drywall, paneling, tile, stucco, plaster, concrete, and other non-metallic surfaces. It locates ferrous (magnetic) metal up to 4 inches (10 cm) deep and non-ferrous (non-magnetic) metal up to 2 inches (5 cm) deep. The MetalliScanner m40 finds plumbing, ductwork, rebar, and nails in walls, floors, and ceilings, and is great for scanning reclaimed lumber for hidden metal.

m40 Functions:

- Detects ferrous and non-ferrous metals in most non-metallic surfaces.

- Finds the pattern of nails to detect studs.

- LED arrays indicate signal strength.

- Blue coil and audio tone indicate when metal target is located.

- PinPoint Scan locates small objects, including screws and nails.

- Wide Scan detects metal in walls or concrete.

PinPoint Scan

Use the m40's PinPoint Scan position to locate small metal targets such as nails and refine your search results.

How to Use:

As the m40 approaches a metal object, the red LEDs progressively light from the bottom up. The top lighted blue coil and an audio tone indicate the strongest signal when a metal target is located.

Calibrate away from any metal for maximum sensitivity. Recalibrating closer to the target decreases sensitivity to find the precise location of metal.

Wide Scan

Use the m40's Wide Scan to quickly find approximate locations of metal in walls and/or concrete.

Use the m40 in Wide Scan position just as you would in PinPoint Scan position.

Scanning through Lath and Plaster

The m40 solves the difficult problem of finding studs in lath and plaster walls that do not contain metal mesh by finding the pattern of nails that attach the wood lath to the studs.

The m40 scans through lath and plaster in both PinPoint Scan and Wide Scan positions.

Key to Success is the Battery

A fully charged 9V battery is required to steadily power the integrated LCD screen in Zircon tools. Please note that, like a cell phone or any personal electronic device, the 9V batteries needed to power Zircon tools can lose power even when sitting idle. The installation of a fresh battery, with an extended expiration date, typically resolves 99% of problems.

THANK YOU ZIRCON METALLISCAN M40!!!!
5 Stars
THANK YOU ZIRCON METALLISCAN M40!!!!
This one gets a full 5 stars. I had to find studs in a wall that has drywall over lath and plaster. I tried everything I could find on the market and nothing worked before I finally gave the M40 a try.I tried base model stud finders, high end stud finders, the Walabot DIY Plus, even the FLIR One infrared camera and even my best strongest magnets. Nothing worked. I've been doing residential construction for 30 years. Admittedly, I haven't had to deal with too many situations like this where there was drywall over lath and plaster, but I have tons of experience looking for structure behind walls. And I thought I would have no trouble with this situation. BUT, I got stumped by it and wasted a lot of time that I could have saved had I known about the M40. It's just plain awesome. It makes you feel like you are in the 21st century, whereas every single other device I used in this type of situation made me feel like I was in prehistoric times, because they just plain old did not work in this situation. I was so frustrated by being stumped that I called a mechanical/electric engineer friend and asked him why stud finders have so much trouble with lath and plaster. I won't go into detail but I now feel like I grasp that engineers really are up against it when it comes to designing a standard (capacitor or radar) stud finder for lath and plaster walls. That made me feel better. I feel like I can sympathize with the designers. But, the M40 gets around the problem. I originally just resorted to drilling to search for the studs in order to install a hand rail. But after the job was done, I tried the M40 on the wall. It took me 10 minutes to find all the studs and I've labeled them with blue tape in the photo. I've now used the M40 on straight lath and plaster walls and on straight drywall. It finds the nails in the lath and finds the drywall screws. I find it more user friendly than any other device I've used. The only drawbacks that I find are...1) that it also finds wires and metal pipes so any time you get a reading you have to go vertical to double check that there is an intermittent screw or nail beep pattern rather than a consistent beep that you get with wires or pipes (but this is a minor issue because it doesn't take long to check)2) you can't really verify center of stud. The device only finds metal, and if the fastener isn't central in the stud, you get the idea. But even with those drawbacks I'm giving it a FULL 5 STARS because it is quick and user friendly.Bravo to the folks at Zircon. All this is not too bash all other stud finders. If there's just straight drywall a lot of them are great, but if there's lath and plaster, honestly I haven't found a single other device that does the job, and I don't think I'm alone in that.

4.0 out of 5 stars Finally, a pretty decent Zircon product (dud detectors, anyone?!)
Reviewed in the United States on August 12, 2019
Works well in testing, able to find even broken off staple legs buried in wood. But it requires being as close as possible (i.e. touching) the wood if you want to scan with the broad side of the tool. Alas, they put rubber bumpers on the end and so when it contacts wood it skids and jumps. I solved this with a couple short bits of 3/4" PEX notched so to grab ahold the rubber bumpers (see picture). Now I can glide this thing down a board, at a consistently close distance, with reliable detection. You'll even see a couple bars on the indicator light up when you run over the iron oxide left in nail and screw holes.

Using the bit of PEX has been immensely helpful and so I thought I'd share.
