Product Care

Your Outdoor Vitals Down Summit Sleeping Bag is a high performance piece of gear. It needs some extra attention to keep it performing at the highest level.

Please read through the care instructions below to ensure that you care for it properly:

Before Washing:

Always wash your down product completely alone to prevent down migration. - Never wash your down product in a washing machine that has an agitator. - If you cannot follow either of these prior instructions you should hand wash your sleeping bag using the detergent and drying process described below.

The Wash & Dry Process:

Use a mild detergent like Dreft (for babies) or Nikwax (for technical gear). - Choose Low Spin or Delicate wash - Choose Cold Wash & Cold Rinse. - Hang dry until the sleeping bag is completely dry. - Then loft and redistribute your down insulation in the dryer by running it for 10 minutes on low or no heat with 3 dryer balls.

Long Term Storage:

Do not store down product compressed long term. Long term compression weakens the insulation's ability to loft and therefore insulate. - We recommend hanging it in your closet or using the included storage sack between uses.

So close to perfect it hurts

So close to perfect it hurts
First the good:Let met start with the fact that this sleeping bag is without a doubt he best quality you can get for the price. Claimed 800 fill for less than $200 is unheard of. Super light, packed with features, comes with a compression sack, sturdy zipper, comfortable shape, draft color... and so on. All of these are also listed in the description of the product and it is accurate.I bought this sleeping bag as well as a Mountain Hardware ratio 15 (650 fill, $200) for comparison purposes. Set up a sleeping pad last night and first went to sleep in my mountain heard wear 15. By 4am it was 32deg outside and I was freezing! The bag is made of very high quality material but lacked the essential feature of a draft color, needless to say I will be parting ways with it.Then I quickly jumped into my Outdoor Vitals summit bag. It was pure bliss! Super warm once I tightened up the draft color as well as the hood. Temperature staid at 32 until 8am and I once I woke up I even forgot I was sleeping outside. I would say this bag is accurately rated and I would not take it lower then 20deg unless I was wearing something heavy underneath. It has a nice and soft interior, packs very small, comes with a stuff sack, and was no heavier then the $200 bag. In terms of features, price, and warmth it blew the mountain hardware bag away, but a few quality issues is what forced me to return it and its loss of two stars. The bad: (Take a look at photos for comparison)Down itself is not waterproof, and the down in this bag is not coated with a hydrophobic coating. This would be ok....but the exterior skin of this sleeping bag does not feel sturdy or too waterproof. I fear taking it into moist conditions which can be an issue when planning to hike for a few days at a time as it feels very thin and flimsy. A video test or review of someone spraying water onto the bag like I've seen with others who claim their bags are waterproof would be the necessarily convincing factor. Just seeing a picture with water beaded up on the the skin of the bag is not enough.Second downfall factor is its drawstrings. Drawstrings should be made of an elastic material so they can be pulled with one hand once inside the bag and not fray. These frayed the second I pulled them to tighten up the hood and draft color. The reason for this fraying is a a combination of drawstring quality the plastic spring loaded locking mechanism which seems to sit too tight on the strings.More on the drawstring issue: The points where the drawstring leave the sleeping bag are just small holes cut into the fabric. These small holes are NOT lined with eyelets as other higher quality bags are (picture included). These eyelets are essential to extending the life of the bag- as without them the previously mentioned plastic peaces can catch onto the bag and slowly start biting away at the outer or inner shell. The Zipper: The zipper itself catches into the inside quite often as all bags do....however it is missing a pull string! Zippers with pull strings make life much easier when zipping up with one hand... not a huge deal however or nearly comparable to the drawstring problems.Final decision: I returned the sleeping bag due to the strings fraying the second I pulled them and my doubt of the bags ability to repel water. (I would test the water theory if I had an extra bag encase water soaks straight through in the process)TLDR: Buy this bag if you are looking for something warm and do not plan on using it in moist conditions. NOTHING beats the price and features. Do not buy this bag if you have some extra cash to spend on a higher quality down bag and plan on doing some serious hiking where snags may occur.UPDATE 3/20/2017I camped out in the Smokey Mountains this past weekend. It was 24 during the day and 8 deg overnight. Granted I have a very good sleeping pad with and R value of 4.4, this sleeping bag kept me very warm. It was also very breathable as all my moisture gathered up on the surface of the bag.Full disclosure I had a thermal base layer with pants, very thick wool socks, thermal base layer shirt, thin wool shirt ontop, and fleece jacket ontop of that. Also I used a 20deg liner.... effectively converting the sleeping bag into a 10deg pag

Lets start the review with the purchase process. I bought this from Amazon after checking out the Outdoor Vitals web site. I was looking for a zero degree bag that was going to be lite to carry, perform like it should, have good reviews, and not cost me an arm+leg. Right after I purchased this I received an email from the owner of the company telling me they had changed the warranty to be a life time warrant. He also directed me to go to the web site and watch informational videos on the sleeping bag. The key one was on how to pack the sleeping bag and how to really compress it without ripping the straps and compression bag. Nice! The bag can be compressed to a really small size.
Now lets get to the performance of the bag. Once a year a group of friends and I head to the AMC Zealand Hut in the White Mountains of NH usually the 3rd weekend in February. Temps average 20 degrees or colder during the days, much colder at night, and the AMC does NOT heat the sleeping quarters. Two years ago it was 20 degrees in the bunk room, 1 year ago it was 12 degrees in the bunk room. During the past years I backpacked up a 20 degree bag (about the same weight as this zero degree bag) and a fleece liner that is supposed to add another 20 degrees to the bag. But carrying both really takes up a bit of room in the pack. This year I took this bag up by itself. The forecast was calling for wind chills of -11 on the summits and temps in the 20's. The bunk house was around 20 degrees and no heat source. I slept in my thin base layer shirt and a thin layer of techwick base layer for pants.
This bag kept me extremely warm bordering on being hot without the need of an extra liner. I did keep it open a little around the neck just to let out a bit of internal heat. Really nice and warm bag.
I am six feet tall, 34 inch waist and average shoulders. The cut of the bag is really nice as it fits my height just right. The width of the bag allowed me to sleep on my side. The finish work around the neck area made it nice where it did not irritate me or slip up to cover my mouth.
I highly recommend this bag for the true warmth, weight, and price.

First of all I have to say that I am extremely impressed by the product overall. As a long-time camper/backpacker I have seen what I refer to as the "500" club (those sleeping bags costing $500.00 or more, which are more than you might think). While they are high quality bags, they are well above the price range of your average camper/backpacker.

The folks at Outdoor Vitals have settled that issue with their "500 Beater" as I will now refer to it. The workmanship and quality are outstanding, the down fill is as good (or better) a quality I have ever seen, and it just plain works! So, those of you out there wishing you could afford one of the "500" club bags, now you can, without paying anywhere near the price. Thank you, thank you, thank you Outdoor Vitals!

Some specifics - the back is roomier than it first appears. I am 5' 9", broad shouldered and 190 pounds. The length is more than enough for several more inches without a problem. The zippers are obviously high quality, and work flawlessly (which is more than I can say for some of the "500" club). The foot room is what I like best about this bag. It's a mummy type bag, which means to foot area is smaller, but yet there is ample room to move the feet without fighting with the bag. And for the other broad shouldered guys out there, you will be happy to know you 'can' be comfortable, warm, and still be able to move inside the bag without unzipping it to re position yourself.

Again, thank you Outdoor Vitals for a truly luxurious bag, without the luxurious price!

When I started looking for a lightweight durable sleeping bag I found this company on Amazon and I started researching it on the internet and YouTube. It's hard to find a lot of good reviews but I really like the owner of the company and the concept in which they sell their bags. The bags are made overseas and before you say Chinese crap I'll let you know they do a good job with their quality control and making sure they put out a good product I now own two of their bags and I find them every bit as good as the $400 bags that you would normally purchase. They keep you warm in the temperatures they rated for. I've had an Aries 30 degree bag in 25 degree weather and a lightweight blanket and I stayed very warm. They're comfortable lightweight and very packable. I highly recommend this bag for Backpackers. If you absolutely have to spend $400 for a sleeping bag buy three different outdoor vital bags for all your seasonal needs you will not be disappointed. This 20° Summit sleeping bag is it very warm and very comfortable when paired with a nice thermal rest air mattress. I will be purchasing more sleeping bags in the future.

Spent my first night in this bag this weekend with the Boy Scouts. What a crappy night! Rain all evening and night, right through to the morning. Got down to about 33 degrees F by about 4. This bag kept me warm all night long while only wearing long-johns, maybe even too warm. I opened the zipper and stuck an arm and leg out and was fine. I got the large in order to have a bit more room, and am happy I did. It's a mummy bag, so not exactly roomy, but the extra 2 inches in width that the large offers makes a hug even difference. And having a little space at the bottom means I'm not coming pressing the loft by filling the entire length.
It stiffs down really small and is surprisingly light for how well it performs. If I traded out the stock compression bag with a heavier duty after market one I bet I could get this compressed down to about 7x9 inches.
I'm extremely pleased with this sleeping bag, well worth the money spent when you consider you can easily spend hundreds more for similar features. My next purchase will be a bivvy sack to accompany my new cold weather bag.

Very satisfied. Slept out in - 25c, inside an igloo. Aside from slipping off my mat, I slept well and the bag performed perfectly. I wish I bought this years ago. Lots of great features. Plenty of room for a mummy cut. You still want to wear a hat/face covering.

I'm 5'11, 175lbs, cold sleeper, and went for the large.

A little thread came undone rather quickly but I don't think it affects the performance at all. I'd still highly recommend it.

this bag rocks! Have used in ground tent and hammock. I love the foot pocket and center zip. I use this as a top quilt(upside down), dont zip it up or anything, and it works great. Also awesome when used in its intended Mummy style. I also like how the stuff sack is actually big enough and wide enough to easily repack.
The neck baffles are an amazing addition as well, they really seal in the heat.

5.0 out of 5 stars CBSA sucks! But, Outdoor Vitals is awesomeness
Reviewed in Canada on March 12, 2021
If you are ordering this into Canada. There is a CBSA tariff on these products. To bad out door vitals didn't have a shipping depot in Canada. So CBSA charges 113.22$.

Other than that this is the lightest sleeping bag ever I have owned and I have been hiking back country for over 20 years. I wish out door vitals had a Canadian distributor. Their products are of the highest standard and you won't be unsatisfied.
