Fastened to a piece of scrap wood adds sturdiness and portability to cap in the kitchen or fermentation area - would be better if you actually had a 'bench' to mount to as it was designed for.
Be prepared to run through a few test caps before actually capping your brew. Adjust height to about inch higher than bottle (or next slot). Pull down on handle and you should feel a lot of resistance. Continue to add pressure until you feel the handle become easier to pull an inch or two more as the capper finishes the crimping action.
Tested with variable sizes of bottles with great results- finnally able to cap see through cerveza bottles that usually break with a two hand capper when pressure is applied to the neck.
Well worth the price and added space the capper takes up with my brew equipment. Durability feels great and easier/safer to operate than a two handed capper. I don't expect it to fail anytime soon but if it were to I would definitely buy this brand and model again.
Never having used a bench capper, I had problems getting the caps to crimp properly. A few emails back and forth with Home Brew Ohio, wanting to return the capper. The last one said "Set the capper just above the bottle and push harder than you think you should. It is a common problem that customers think the capper is not working but the handle isn't being pushed far enough down."
That did the trick. There is an extra 1/4 inch that I just wasn't pushing through. Did that it, and caps are crimping great!
I find having the capper on a counter or bench to be too high, putting too much strain on my shoulder. It works much easier on a cheap, all wood stool with a flat seat that I have. It is about 6-8 inches lower than the counter top. I also used a piece of carpet anti-slip mat to steady the capper. I probably will be bolting the capper to the stool in the future but for now the anti-slip mat works great no matter where the capper is used.
The capper seems well made (pressed and stamped metal, mostly) so I am expecting many years of service.
I operate this screwed to a table. Word to the wise: Don't put the uncapped bottles on the same table ... I did, and got away with it this time, but I feel it would be better to avoid having a bunch of bottles with caps lightly put on the same table as a capper like this, inles the table is stout indeed.
When I feel the "crimp" I then turn the bottle 90 degrees and press again. Not sure if this is necessary, but I did see mention of doing it like this with other cappers. The "crimp" is best felt when the bottle is square and center, and the pressure is such that you can just feel a sudden "give" at the last. The more centered and square the bottle is ont he pad, the better it feels.
I have no idea how long this thing will last. The construction seems solid, but the main concern I would have is that the lobe at the base of the handle that pushes the plunger down is made of plastic ... I'm not sure if I should lubricate it or not. If it wears too much, the plunger won't be pushed down enough, but I expect I would have heard about that from other reviewers ... ?
The one thing that can be improved is the handled grip. I've not checked, but believe a bicycle handle grip will slip over the existing hard plastic grip and will make the actual capping process kinder to the palm of the hand. Otherwise I endorse this product with 5 stars. As for durability, time will tell but there seems nothing flimsy about this Italian made product. One thing I think was mentioned as a negative comment in the reviews was extra pressure was required to actually complete the capping process. I did find that for the first few caps extra pressure was required but after that "break in" period the required handle pressure seemed normal.
