I had a hip replacement and need to use ice to keep my swelling and pain reduced. It has been hard to find a single resuable compress that is large enough to cover the top of my thigh and 8 inch incision. Even in the hospital i needed to use two ice packs to cover the affected area and then keeping them where i wanted them was impossible. I found this gel pack on Amazon and am thrilled that it is wide enough to cover my entire thigh, even down the side of my hip and up to the top of my incision which is just below my waist. The cover that comes with the gel pack has elastic straps that are long enough to wrap around my waist and can loop around my leg... with velcro at the ends that hold the compress securely against my leg and stays right where i want it. I can move around easily (laying or walking) with the gel pack on, it doesn’t shift as i move. This gel pad/cover combination has given me great relief and is contributing to my fast recovery. It exceeds my expectations. Well worth the price. I recommend this product very highly.
I am adding this comment, i just read several bad reviews and their main objections were the fact that the icy cold does not last 2 hours and the length of the straps. My understanding is that ice packs should not to be applied for more than 20 minutes to avoid frostbite, so since i followed my doctor’s directions i had no issue with the duration of the gel pack icy-state. It was more than adequate for my purpose and there were plenty of ice crystals in the pad after i returned it to the freezer when i was done. Regarding the ‘petite’ person who could not wrap the straps around her leg. I can tell you that i am not petite but normal a size 10. I had to wrap the straps around my thigh TWICE they were so long and the strap i used around my waist was more than sufficient to fit; keep in mind, the straps are elastic so they could have been longer.

Use As Horse Ice Boots
I bought these to use for icing horse's legs. Boots made for this are exceptionally exceptionally expensive and there are complaints on many that they don't stay cool for long. These work well for icing. The Velcro sticks anywhere on the straps, so I have been wrapping them around and around snugly to give some compression. There's enough strap to cover most of the surface once. I can't attest to how long the material will hold up to the snug pressure, but for now it is working and beats $100-200 per pair of boots. The extra large size is just large enough to cover from below the knee to the bottom of the fetlock on my 16h horse. It just meets in the front on the cannon bone and gaps over the fetlock a bit. I left them on today for 50 minutes while working another horse and they were still cool when I removed them. They don't ever feel exceptionally cold, but they are definitely cool. They remain very flexible right out of the freezer. This is a great hack for those not wanting to drop large amounts of cash and should do the same thing as more expensive "compression" ice boots.
