The speakers were delivered within a day because of my Prime membership. They were securely boxed by Edifier so they wouldn’t get damaged during transit. When I removed them from the box the first thing I noticed was how well built and good looking they are. Quite compact (perfect for bookshelves) and absolutely look and feel more expensive than I would expect from a hundred dollar pair of speakers. Setup was super easy. Took only about 5 minutes. The remote is simple, but that it was I like about it. Volume up and down and mute. If you want to tweak treble and bass you simply turn dials on the side of one of the speakers. The on/off switch is also on a speaker. Easy enough to deal with.
I held my breath when I put the first record on my turntable. At first the speakers just didn’t sound right. Did a little trouble shooting and realized I didn’t hook up the wires to the back of the speakers properly. They are color coded for positive/negative polarity but I just didn’t pay attention or read the small instruction manual that came with the speakers. Once I fixed the wire polarity and replayed the record, I could feel a smile come across my face. Yes! Exactly what I hoped for, nice clean sound, with decent treble and bass. Adjusted both to my liking and walla, totally enjoyed the music.
After being satisfied with the basic sound I cranked up the volume to see if the speakers could handle high volume without distortion. Again, the answer was yes. Plenty loud for me, and I do like to crank it up once in a while. Never did put it to full volume. Just wasn’t neccessary.
I know there are better speakers out there, and these are not Bluetooth or WiFi ready. But that is not what I was looking for. These are dedicated to my phonograph and for me they are perfect. From the great reviews they receive on Amazon, it is obvious many people feel the same as I do. In fact, this is supposedly Amazon’s best selling speakers. In that regard, I want to thank all of the other Amazon reviewers who wrote about these speakers. They definitely influenced my purchase decision because I for one do rely on the star ratings products receive on Amazon.
The bottom line on these Edifier speakers is that I highly recommend them, specifically because of their excellent price, beauty and sound. In my humble opinion I don’t think you will find a better value out there today in speakers at this price range or even slightly higher.
Having gotten those critical comments out of the way, I want to say that I really like these speakers. A recent move into a new home meant I did not have the desktop real estate for my previous sound setup and I was left with using some very tiny Harman/Kardon speakers left over from an old bundled pc purchase. They worked okay for Windows to ping, chime and clink at me but not much else. The Edifier R1280T's were a huge step up and I can again enjoy music, games and videos on my pc.
As other reviewers have done, I swapped out the cables that came with the speakers for some more substantial items but the improvements were minimal. What makes a more noticeable difference is the position of the speakers. I made some stands out of scrap particle board shelving to get the speakers off the surface of the desk and angled upward. This may reduce the impression of "warmth" that many listeners notice first but the bass is tighter and the overall tonal balance is improved. Getting the tweeters directed more towards my ears also cleaned up the top end and helped imaging substantially.
I wanted to stay within my self-imposed budget and while I realize while none of us can blow hundred dollar bills out of our nose (if you can, I want to be your new best friend), $100 doesn't buy as much as it use to. You will probably spend more on snacks for your super bowl party and I can't go into Walmart for socks and a can of cheese-whiz without spending more than this before I can get out. Edifier has made smart choices in what they put into their product at this price point. The R1280T cannot accept a digital signal nor does it connect via Bluetooth. However, the construction seems solid, the cabinets are handsome, the woofer has a rubber surround instead of foam, the tone and volume controls are thoughtfully located and offer some tailoring of the sound in applications where you can't do this with a sound card. The speaker size is small enough to allow you to move them around to get the best overall sound. There are connections for two devices and you don't need to manually select the source, the speakers just play whatever signal they are receiving. You even get a modest little remote to control volume or mute the speakers.
I don't care for inexpensive 2.1 systems as, almost invariably, the sub-woofer has to do a lot more work than just reinforcing the bottom octave and getting all the drivers to blend, especially listening nearfield at a computer station, is almost impossible. While no speaker can produce true low end bass with a tiny driver and limited power, this speaker produces sufficient bass to make listening enjoyable and the sound is much better integrated than a comparably priced 2.1 system.
Most audiophiles will probably ignore this product because of its relatively low price but it's their loss. If you resist the urge to crank up the bass or volume to extremes, this little speaker will reward you with a very natural and musical presentation. If you keep the distance between the speakers equal to or less than the distance to your listening position, you can get a decent soundstage and reasonable imaging.
I would recommend them to anyone looking for wired, powered speakers for their computer in this price range.

Setup was quick and simple. The included instructions were easy to follow. Package includes all cables and wires you may need.
Sound quality is excellent and the bass/treble controls are very responsive. The bass and treble controls have a notch at centre so you can feel where 0 is without looking. Volume control is notched on every turn. Controls are well marked and easy to understand
The speakers have a sleek, modern design that are compact and fit nicely into plenty of aesthetics with their wooden side panels. The front fabric covers pop off easily if the bare speaker look is more to your taste.
The remote control is handy and works well. Haven't tried it at a great distance as the room is average sized but I'd imagine range isn't an issue.
Neutral/negative:
I wish the on/off switch was located with the other controls on the side, as opposed to on the back. In my setup, I have space to reach in behind to turn them off (as I do when not in use) but others may not
The remote only controls volume/mutes the speakers. It might be nice to include the bass and treble controls as well. The other thing worth mentioning about the remote is that the battery compartment is tricky to open. It can be done quickly with practice, but the first few times you'll probably fumble with it.
Overall impression:
These speakers are well made, and sound fantastic. The issues I mentioned above are minor and don't take away from my overall rating.
I would recommend these speakers to anyone looking for a high quality option on a budget.
It gets loud enough to be adequate for large rooms and halls (of course in halls you have to atleast cover up the walls in drapes so that sound doesn't reflect and create echoes). For audiophiles, they need to sit at right, sweet spot or try adjusting the speaker to various positions, to hear the best stereo effect from both speakers.
I have listened to a lot of 2.1 cheaper computer speakers during my college years, but this just straight up beats them. And not just in clarity but in the bass department too. These small looking speakers have surprisingly very tight, punchy and deep bass. Of course it isn't as deep as an external subwoofer system would be, but speaker systems with a subwoofer in this price range lack the tightness and punch (which makes the bass enjoyable in the first place). Still the bass in this is more than needed. So much that I can feel the rumble of a car engine when its revved. That too even at very low volume levels! Needless to say it handles high frequencies without any sweat. Instrumentals sound great, and even better when I turn the bass knob down and the treble up.
My suggestion: If you have the budget for it, don't hesitate even a bit. Rather you will be pleasantly satisfied if it even falls a little outside your budget.
Other pros: The wires are long enough. Plus the remote comes in handy sometimes.
Cons: No Bluetooth on this version (Bluetooth version is costlier than it should be at the moment of writing this review). So I had to buy a Logitech bluetooth receiver for around ₹1-1.5k. Plus it would have been a good idea to have a mechanically controlled volume knob instead of digital, so that one can pinpoint the lowest and highest volume settings.
Sound: no scratchy sound when you turn the volume/sound control, great amplification
Worth the buy if you are looking for small but powerful bookshelf speakers for your turntable! (Changed into this after dealing with degrading quality of PreSonus)
