I could spend thirty dollars for one replacement or buy this system for thirty six dollars and get two remotes. HA Haaa, they both work great! They programmed to my old system just fine. Finally get to use it again after 8 years in Valet mode.
-Valet input appears nonfunctional, though the switch works.
-Could not reprogram the key-fob because of above problem with valet input.
-Poor instructions. Had to resort to internet search and instructions for "work alike" models.
-Shock sensor could not be made sensitive enough for my taste.
-Antenna length restricted mounting location to "up high."
-Starter interrupter wire length restricted mounting location to "down low."
This was a fun install, if not for being a PITA. Though, to be fair, I also did the "well, if I'm going to install this, I may as well also do X,Y,Z,..." which lead me to fixing my entire HVAC system, as well as installing a new radio. That rabbit hole made this take much longer than it needed to.
They say professional installation required, and I understand why. I have an ATA in electrical engineering and it still took me a few days to sort out the details. The alarm is not the issue; when you understand the system all the wires become self explanatory. The problem will be your vehicle. 80% of the battle will be getting ACCURATE wiring diagrams for your specific YMMT. Critically, be aware that you're not going to get away with just a blown fuse if something goes wrong. A lot of the stuff you will be integrating this into connects directly to sensitive electronics. Pop an integrated circuit that's deep in a computer that's deep in your dash/fender/firewall/??? and it's game over, it can take out your whole vehicle. That being said... It was only about 10-12 wires... With patience most DIYers can handle it I'm sure.
There are provisions for electronic door locks, which I have yet to hook up. My truck has manual door locks, so I need to add aftermarket actuators. Instructions seem to say the alarm by itself can drive actuators, but I don't trust that. I probably will have to add relays to bolster the lock/unlock signal current, which is pretty lame. The lock/unlock feature is quite essential, honestly. Once, because obviously it helps prevent theft to have your door locked. But twice, because without it you are 90% likely to open the door with the alarm armed, and set it off in your face.... Ask me how I know.
There is also provisions for auxiliary remote control, which is mostly for separate remote start feature. Since my ride is pretty basic, I intend to fabricate that system myself. This will entail more relays and wired logic for the safety checks, but is otherwise no more complicated than turning the key.
With respect to another review.... it SHOULD be possible to reprogram the fob such that lock and unlock are on separate buttons. Though, be warned, they are purposefully combined as a sort of security work around for the "rolljam" exploit. Knowing how rolljam works, I personally prefer to have them separate, and simply cycle the unlock button a few times physically near the alarm antenna. Problem is, I can't get the box to acknowledge the valet button press!? Not sure what that is about.
ProTip: Don't solder! I'm no stranger to a soldering iron. Soldering is my go to for everything I do. However, even in my cigarette burned interior I realized the iron was a mistake as soon as I started using it. I even burned my hand on my iron and I haven't done that in probably 20 years! NOPE, don't do it! Instead use non-insulated butt connectors and 3:1 adhesive lined heat shrink. Faster, cleaner, better looking, less likely to burn your hand. Trying to solder in that enclosed space is 50% of the reason it took me as long as it did. And that's AFTER I took the seats out. You have been warned.
