I don't have a problem with my WIFI range, but I wanted a way to get Gigabit Ethernet ports on another floor. This worked wonderfully for my purpose and was much less expensive than adding one or more Powerline adapters (the 2 port Gigabit versions can run $80-100 each). Set up was a breeze with the touch screen and now I have 4 Gigabit Ethernet ports with speeds the same as my router.
LONG STORY:
I'm planning to purchase a new Smart TV. My current TV is a 32 inch LCD that still runs well, so I'll be moving it up into the bedroom. I have a couple of older streaming devices connected that aren't able to use the 5 GHz WIFI band. For this reason, I'm currently using Ethernet connections, rather than the slower 2.4 GHz WIFI. I plan to keep the router downstairs and want to move the older TV and streaming devices upstairs.
A few years ago I purchased 500Mbps Powerline adapters that work very well for my printer in the upstairs 2nd bedroom, but the speed is only half of what I get when connected directly to my router. The newer Powerline adapters or range extenders with Gigabit ports are a bit pricey and have only 1 or 2 ports. The one I liked with a passthrough electrical plug and 2 Gigabit Ethernet ports was $89.99, but it was out of stock. Then I happened to see this range extender. It cost less than the Powerline adapter and has 4 Gigabit ports. So I decided to give it a try.
Setup was extremely easy. Using the touch screen I was able to easily connect with both WIFI bands and rename the SSIDs. I then tested the Ethernet ports with my laptop computer and was happy to find that my Internet speed was the same as when connected to the router. I then took the extender and laptop upstairs and tested the speed again. I'm happy to report I am getting the same full speed upstairs as I get directly from the router.
Since I don't really need the additional WIFI bands upstairs I decided to hide them so they don't display on my WIFI list. This was very easy to do via the touch screen. I also like that the screen shows how many devices are connected.
I've been using this extender for a month now, and have not had any problems with dropped signals or slow speeds. I'm very happy with it.
Wifi range seems equally good. I tested it and was able to get ~60ft away, again through many walls, and still get a decent signal on both bands.
Setup was a breeze. I do have a recommendation however, if you plan on using the TP Link webpage dedicated to monitoring and controlling this device. I would set it up using that page (tplinkrepeater.net) instead of the touchscreen. At first I used the touchscreen, but found out afterward that for whatever reason, I couldn't login to the TP Link page. The page is useful, as it gives you more information about the device than what the touchscreen shows. I did a hard reset on the device and was able to login to the webpage and set it up through there. Super easy.
As far as I'm concerned, this thing rocks. I'll cross my fingers and hope this remains true over time! If not, I'll post an update.
***NOTE, be sure to go to the TP Link website and download the latest firmware version and install. It seems to have improved performance.
Background info: I use ATT Uverse with the modem they provided. I use a MACbook Pro with the OS Sierra. I have a smart phone and 3 iPads and a Windows 10 laptop. I also have 2 Amazon Fires connected to 2 separate TV's. My ATT router is located downstairs & the Amazon Fires are located upstairs.
Now, for the problem. In order to watch Amazon Fire, I have to turn off the wifi for all other devices. Then, from 5 am until about noon I can watch Amazon Prime. After noon, there's no use--I can't watch anything. So, based on the reviews, I decided to order the TP Link AC 1900 Range Extender.
I used the set up on the unit. Once set up was complete, the system told me I had wifi but did not have an internet connection. When I unplugged the TP Link and tried to connect to my ATT Uverse, couldn't do it. I tried this a couple of times before I contacted tech support. The ladies were courteous but could not assist me--they kept insisting I didn't know how to enter my ATT password..really??
Looked online for help at TP Link's webpage but nothing helped. Ultimately, my issue was my ATT router IP address was incorrect. I had to also select a new IP address for the TP Link. Now, I don't consider myself a tech genius or even tech savvy. I just have a certain stick-to-it-ness and am a stickler for detail.
So, if you find this doesn't work after the first 12 tries, walk away as I did, and try again the next day. Check the IP addresses, check the iPv4, router and sub addresses. As I write this review, I'm using my ATT Uverse connection for my Mac and I am watching Justified on Amazon Prime...
