This is a God send for my dog and me!
I am so glad I took the chance and bought this! I was not sure if it would work the same on animals, since it was designed for humans, but it most definitely appears to allow pain-free testing on my dog. I have a diabetic, 11 pound Maltese dog that was fighting me tooth and nail when it came time to do testing. Just like in humans, it is vital to test a dog's fasting blood sugar before giving insulin and I also conduct weekly or bi-weekly blood glucose curves on him to determine if he is getting the appropriate insulin dose and that requires testing every 2 hours for a 12-24 hour period. I felt awful every single time I would test him because I knew I was hurting him. As soon as I would take out the meter or lancet, he would start planning his getaway and would growl and cry and fight me all the way. I was frustrated and feeling defeated every day. Thankfully, I heard about the Genteel through an online support group for diabetic dogs, and after watching a couple videos of how it works, I decided to give it a try. If it would allow me to test my dog’s blood sugar without causing him pain, then it would be worth every penny. Well, I am happy to report that since the day I received my Genteel, my dog has not cried or growled at me one single time. He is now oblivious to the fact that he is even being tested and has even been successfully tested several times in his sleep, without it even waking him.For those interested in using this on your dog, I will provide some pointers and advice. I cannot tell you how wonderful it feels to be able to test my pup without feeling like I am hurting him. I know several other canine moms that use the Genteel on their pup and they are also just as pleased with the Genteel. How I use Genteel to test my dog:I use the base of my dog’s tail to test because he does not feel it at all and I can actually test him while he sleeps or just rests and he has no idea I am even doing it. I get everything together ahead of time and sit him next to me on the couch and give him either a chew toy to play with or just rub his back. Meanwhile, I am prepping and testing and he is none the wiser because he cannot see what I’m doing. I shave a small spot at the base of his tail, (as indicated in the photo) then I warm the area by placing a sock filled with rice that has been microwaved for 25-30 seconds and applied to his tail for 15-20 seconds to warm the area and make it easier to get blood. I had just tested when I took the photo, that is why his skin is dark pink, because it is still warm and he has sensitive skin. Once the skin is warmed, I put a thin layer of Vaseline on the area to keep the blood from spreading into any remaining fur, then I place the Genteel on the base of the tail, holding in place for 3-5 seconds, then I depress the button and continue to hold the Genteel in place for an additional 3-5 seconds so the blood forms a nice size drop, then I remove my finger from the button, and then I remove the Genteel from the base of his tail. I am then left with a nice blood drop for testing.Tips:Make sure your finger is covering the hole in the button as this is what creates the suction that pulls the blood up to the surface.Do not remove your finger off the hole until after you have depressed the button and waited 3-5 seconds for the blood drop to form. Once you release your finger from the hole, the back of the plunger will come out even further so make sure there is nothing blocking it or you might mess up your perfect blood drop. Carefully remove the Genteel once you release your finger from the hole on the button.Animal skin is way thicker than human’s skin, so if you are using a thick skin area like the base of the tail, make sure you are using a lower gauge lancet, such as a 21g or 23g, or you will have great difficulty getting blood, no matter what type of lancing device you use. When testing at the base of the tail, the purple tip works best for me and for several friends of mine who have diabetic dogs and use the Genteel to test the base of the tail. When testing in other areas, a different color may work but most find the purple tip is best for testing this area.Make sure the area you are going to test is shaved well, otherwise the blood will disburse into the surrounding fur.Warming the test area for 15-30 seconds with a warmed rice sock or heating pad can make a huge difference in the amount of blood that forms in the drop. This is true whether using a conventional lancing device, holding the lancet in your fingers, or using the Genteel. The warmth allows the blood to flow more freely and warms the capillaries so they release blood more easily.Applying a very thin layer of Vaseline to the test site after you warm it and before you test, can help the blood form into a drop, instead of disbursing into the fur, when the area is not shaved completely. If you are testing the base of the tail, try to keep your dog from looking back to see what you’re doing, especially if they are accustomed to feeling pain from testing before you purchased the Genteel. Even though the Genteel will create a more pain-free testing experience, if the pup sees what you are going, we might react and try to pull away because he associates the process with previous pain. Since I’ve started using the Genteel, I have tested my dog several times while he was asleep and he has had no idea I was even testing him. For me, that is a testimony to the fact that he is not experiencing any pain with the Genteel.I am so glad I gave the Genteel a try, I hated seeing the hurt and frustration in my pups eyes as he looked at me as if to say, “Mommy, why are you hurting me every day?” Before using Genteel, he would wrap his arms around my neck and try to get away as I was testing him, fighting me the whole way and crying and growling. I felt like the biggest monster but I had to do it because I cannot give insulin blindly to my dog and just hope his blood sugar is high enough for his insulin dose. As a responsible pet parent, I realize the importance of testing his fasting blood glucose every time, before I give his next insulin dose. This way, if his numbers are low, I can allow the food more time to work and raise his blood glucose to a safe level, before giving his next shot.I found out about the Genteel through a wonderful support group on Facebook called Canine Diabetes Support and Information. If you are the parent of a diabetic dog, please feel free to join us. We are a group of 6k+ who are all going through the same struggles…trying to do the best thing and provide the best care for our diabetic pups and we support each other immensely.

5.0 out of 5 stars Zing! Wow that was quick!
Reviewed in the United States on August 30, 2016
Okay let's talk stabbing yourself. Over and over, day after day, and year after year. Let's talk about the trepidation of pain-- that time when you slowly creep up on hitting the button because you know it's going to hurt like hell no matter WHERE you put it (Alternate site or especially the fingertips (the sides even.) Even with 33 guage micro lancets, my nerves hate me. They absolutely HATE me when I lace anywhere on my body. When I go to the doctor for the A1C, my finger throbs for hours after (no joke.) I flinch when I lance my fingers. It hurts when I use my arm. The pad of the hand? Oh, lordy. Worst pain ever. I feel it for a while after.

Enter the Genteel lancing device.

I was skeptical.

I tried it on my arm first and had to use the 2nd tip to even get blood. That was ok because it still worked. I've used a few meters. Some like the Easy Touch were completely unforgiving about blood drop size, and they didn't allow OOPS-add more. I've used the Contour Next (0.6 microliters) and the Freedom/Freestyle Freedom Lite (0.3 microliter drops) that lets you add more. This lancing unit will, more often than not, get the amount needed for the Easy Touch without a need for a little up and down milking motion before releasing the vacuum. It would always give me enough for the Freestyle Freedom Lite. (You know that feeling, folks-- you stare at the blood drop and you know you are in better control because the blood barely wants to come out that day, or you know your sugar is high because that drop is right there immediately-- either way, this thing gets the blood.)

Pros: I know what you're thinking. Painless? Hah. What just about every place means is "pain lesser", usually. I can honestly say this is the FIRST lancing device (and I've used them all from the standard one that comes in the kit to the side-purchases in the effort to not hurt as much) that actually doesn't make me flinch when I lance my finger. I can push the trigger now (after about a week of being dubious and sneaking up to pulling the trigger) hold the vacuum, release the button, collect the drop-- all without wincing. I know some of you are truckers and it doesn't bother you. You're used it-- that's great, but I never did. Whether I test on my arm or on my finger, I don't even hesitate anymore pressing the trigger. I just put the tip up to my skin, create the vacuum, and press. Done.

This alone makes it worth every penny. Was I skeptical? Oh yes.

Does it really work? Yes, indeed.

Do you feel it? Yes, but while you feel the stick (sometimes) it is not a PAINFUL sensation, and that is what counts. I don't feel the OW--pull away sensation that I do with others.

it comes with an emergency contact card in the case. Damn, how useful. I never even realized how great that was until I saw it.

Everything FITS in the case, which is an added bonus: tips, glucose log, extra lancets, alcohol wipes, and even a few pen needles if you so choose. While some people may want "small and discreet" I prefer "functional and useful" and this fits the bill. The case is just big enough to hold everything I'd need before and after I lance. I can't really ask for more than that. The bag is branded Gentell with a butterfly on it. It doesn't scream "Hi I'm a lancing device and holding a glucose meter inside." If someone recognizes it, the already know what a Genteel is, so that's a different story.

The case comes with a place to be belt mounted and has a hand strap. Both work well, just don't get so exited that you swing it around and smack someone in the face with it, and you'll be fine.

Cons: the bag that comes with it is "universal" and it doesn't fit my test strip container very well. I had to struggle getting it in there. It fits-- barely. It's elastic, so it did work, eventually.

The velcro tabs have to be permanently installed on your meter to work. This doesn't quite work for my meter unless I put it over the battery cover. (Otherwise I can't open it). Now... every so often I pull it off the velcro and get my meter... and the cover... in 2 pieces in my hand.

Sometimes pressing the trigger is awkward. I feel like I'm pressing it, but it's not triggering. I'm getting better at it, but it was something awkward when I first started over to my switch.

Overall: Investment of funds aside, if you are going to pay for lancing device, this one makes up for the many I have purchased in the hopes they would do what this was actually does: take the ouch out of lancing yourself. It might take a few tries to find the right tip size for each area you test. (I use blue for my finger sticks, and yellow for alternate sites-- you may find it different). I can definitely see the use of this over a normal lancing for children if you want to not have them "fear" the stick and be willing to do it to themselves. (Hey this comes with cheerful stickers to apply... and I'm almost tempted to use them, and I'm an adult!)

Last con: you shouldn't use it for more than one person, so I can't just let someone borrow it and go "LOOK HOW AWESOME THIS WORKS".

You'll have to take my word that it worked for me very well. I'm a finger sticking hater, and I don't mind it anymore. To me, that makes this thing worth it. If you are reading this, searching for a less painful device, then I hope this helps you.

3.0 out of 5 stars Very messy vacuum device
Reviewed in Canada on November 23, 2022
I've used this device about 20 times now. I was surprised at the amount of blood coating the inside.
I remember an old vacuum lancet from the 2000s. It was cheap, and it had a lot of space between the lancet and the plastic walls. I used it for a decade and it didn't get bloody like this. It was also easy to clean.
This lancet device works - it creates a stronger vacuum than the old lancet did, and it gets so incredible messy that it's starting to scare me. It's also difficult and time consuming to clean because the opening is so small, and the rubber piece has to be removed as well.
It's a good device, but it would be better if the plastic cylinder were bigger so this would be easier to clean - and get less dirty over all.
