    Appearances Can Be Deceiving
    [UPDATE]------------------------------------Date: 01/12/2017With extensive usage more problems have begun to emerge with this panel.First, a very faint buzzing noise has started to emanate from the back of the screen. This wouldn't normally be an issue, but, as I've said before, a $1200 screen should be perfect. It should cook you dinner, feed it to you, and sing you to sleep. Unfortunately, I don't like the song being sung to me. And the fact that I paid $1200 to hear it makes it that much more unbearable.However, the minor coil whine picked up by my rather sensitive ears wouldn't be a so bad if it weren't for the second issue that's emerged: scan lines. For those unfamiliar, scan lines are a screen artifact consisting of faint, faded horizontal lines that overlay the screen and (obviously) detract from image quality. I've placed a sample below to demonstrate what scan lines look like and added a comparison shot of another panel (PB258Q) with no scan lines. After numerous tests over several other monitor types, the PG348Q is the only one to demonstrate intrusive scan lines. Some cursory research indicates that Asus has declared that this is 'normal' for this panel. Some customers have exchanged this panel up to 5+ times only to find intrusive scan lines on each one. Ironically, overclocking is one of the suspected causes for this issue. For me however, the problem wasn’t overclocking: it was the G-Sync module. Upon disabling G-Sync, the scan lines became far less visible. I paid hundreds of dollars specifically for the adaptive abilities of this screen. It turns out the reason I bought this screen is now the same reason I’ll be returning it.More and more I'm becoming convinced that the niche ultrawide market is actually a testing ground for experimental technology. The guinea pigs like me who fork over large sums of money to participate are given half-baked versions of what we think we're getting: '100Hz ultrawide' really means ‘60Hz-overclockable ultrawide'. 'Overclockable to 100Hz' really means, 'MAYBE overclockable to 100Hz and G-Sync with scan lines'. 'Curved IPS display' really means 'Curved IPS display with 20% of the screen eaten up by bright orange glow', and so on.As for me, I have no interest in forking over $1200 to be a test subject. I'll have to make time to send this panel back.[REVIEW OF MONITOR 2]------------Date: 12/31/2016Received the replacement today. Amazon has been quite helpful so far. I can't say the second screen is much better, however. I was looking forward to have it up and running so I could take some samples of the light bleed. Unfortunately, this panel had strange power defect: if unplugged and then plugged, the screen would temporarily refuse to reboot (when plugged in again). I naturally assumed this was due to a defect with the power brick so I tried the brick from Monitor 1, but to no avail. Then, randomly, the screen turned back on when plugged in again with its original power brick. It worked for a short while. Then, upon unplugging/plugging it again to rearrange cables, it refused to boot again. The first monitor works fine in all outlets, with both power bricks so I'm forced to conclude the defect is with the replacement's (monitor 2) internal power delivery.Due to Monitor 2's power issue, backlight bleed was entirely irrelevant and I'm sending it back posthaste. However, before packaging it up, I did take one photo in low light and brightness to demonstrate the bleed and glow prevalent on the screen. Although this photo isn't entirely accurate, this light leakage will only worsen in a dark room and I suppose I can take solace in the fact that, since this screen was likely no better as far as backlighting is concerned, I didn't have to waste time testing it.For standard of comparison, I posted a photo of a review sample given to TFT Central (a screen review site) that evaluated this monitor for backlight leakage. The photo is posted below with a description so you can see what this screen is supposed to look like with proper QC. Contrast this with the photo taken of Monitor 1. My photo, at least of monitor 1, is done using the same standard of testing provided by TFT: 1/8s shutter, 1.5-2m distance from screen, dark room, brightness to ~30 or 120cd/m^2. There's a stark difference in the amount and type of bleed present. It proves that ASUS isn't incapable of making these screens with no backlight leakage, they apparently just don't care to maintain this level of QC on average. They also have one standard when it comes to showing off their products through reviewers and a completely different standard for 'off the shelf' products that you'll likely take home.Another major issue is that there seems to be some misrepresentation of this monitor’s specs. The Amazon page states that it supports, "...seamlessly switching from 60Hz to 100Hz for smooth gameplay..." and that it, "...SPORTS a 100Hz refresh rate." This is stated in multiple places on the box as well: '100Hz Rapid Refresh Rate'. The problem is, this monitor is NOT a 100Hz native refresh rate screen: it is a 60Hz screen that may or may not be able to overclock to 100Hz. It does not SPORT a 100Hz refresh rate as described. The fine print in the manual states the following:"Please note that Over Clocking function/performance depends on the GPUs or contents displayed. ASUS only provides this function. The performance or any side effect after activation is not guaranteed."In other words, despite what they say everywhere online and on the box to get you to buy their product, ASUS DOES NOT GUARANTEE THAT THIS SCREEN WILL OVERCLOCK TO 100Hz, i.e. performance is not guaranteed. Moreover, they heavily imply that any defects that arise as a result of overclocking will NOT be covered under warranty and are the sole liability of the consumer, i.e. any side effect after activation is not guaranteed. This is a blatant case of misleading the consumer into believing they're purchasing something which they aren't. ASUS does not support the repeated 100Hz claims that they make for this monitor. Therefore, this is a 60Hz screen with OPTIONAL built-in overclocking capabilities that MAY give you stable overclocks UP TO 100Hz as a maximum. It should be advertised as such. Saying that this screen 'sports a 100Hz refresh rate' is very misleading, bordering false advertising.For me personally, the bleed isn't bad enough in the dark that it ruins my work entirely, but it’s still a serious issue. Due to time constraints, I may or may not end up keeping this screen even though I find this level of quality and the disingenuous nature of the manufacturer to be unacceptable for a $1200 purchase.However, if you're a busy professional that likes to play games for fun and you're looking for an all purpose screen with great QC, minimal defects, low IPS glow/leakage, and a true native 100Hz refresh rate, you'll most likely want to consider looking elsewhere.[REVIEW OF MONITOR 1]------------Date: 12/29/2016Pros:[1] Gsync works fine[2] No coil whine[3] A 100Hz overclock works at the time of this writing[4] The screen has a clean, non-tacky aesthetic and the color accuracy is spot onCons:[1] As many others have mentioned with the PG348Q, backlight bleed and severe IPS glow (more than normal IPS screens) is a major issue for those looking for deep blacks in games, movies or (more importantly) for professional purposes. As you can see in the photos below (brightness @ 30 or 120cd/m^2), the orange glow on the panel is profound, particularly from the bottom left. At the very least this is unacceptable for a ~$1200 screen. Fiddling with settings doesn't change this and moreover, should NOT be necessary. I shouldn't have to adjust image settings to compensate for poor QC on such a high-end piece of equipment.[2] Additionally, there is a small smear of dust in the top right corner, under the panel, covering 4-6 pixels (seen in the white photo below). Normally this wouldn't be a major issue, but for the price, QC needs to be perfect.Currently ordered a replacement from Amazon. Will update this review when it arrives.

    Top reviews from the United States

    Reviewed in the United States on September 1, 2017
    Trying to find the words that will adequately describe this stupefyingly incredible monitor will be challenging. The wow factor is huge when you see this for yourself. ASUS has put a lot of work into every aspect of this LCD from the packaging, to the out of box experience, to the technical achievement of producing the single best image I have ever seen on an LCD.

    I had high expectations when I ordered this. I was aware of the quality control issues that are referenced in some of the reviews, especially the early ones. I was worried about IPS glow and all the other concerns. Let me tell you, either I got lucky or those are issues of the past. This thing is a masterpiece and a work of art.

    First of all, it is bright. I have 3 ASUS PA238Q LCDs, which have served me well. I’m not sure I can use them along with this due to the massive change in quality and brightness. The PG348Q is twice as bright. It makes it hard to even look at anything else. Of course, as soon as I thought about the brightness, I thought about the IPS glow. I didn’t really notice any. I tried a few games with dark backgrounds. It’s barely noticeable. I mean you really have to work at staring at the corners to notice a very, very slight glow. I tried Premiere and After Effects as well, which sit on static dark backgrounds. There is no issue with IPS glow for me.

    My desktop looks incredible. The text and icons are razor sharp. There is a tremendous amount of workspace. My productivity is guaranteed to increase with so much real estate. ASUS also includes a tool to make it even easier to send windows to different areas of the screen.

    Playing a game is incredibly satisfying. I tried Prey, Flight Sim World, Witcher III, and a few others. Ultra widescreen is jaw dropping because I’ve always been used to bezels. Seeing an image without having it split across 3 screens is really incredible. Everything is so immersive. There’s also a one button solution to get from 60hz to 100hz. I’m running an EVGA GTX 1080 ti SC, and have everything generally maxed out. My performance can be variable but with gsync it’s pretty consistent. In Prey, I’m at 100FPS. Other games, like Flight Sim World, are at 45FPS, but gsync keeps everything buttery smooth. Gsync as far as I’m concerned, is the other real big winner in the experience. It really helps.

    In closing, it is clear to see that I love every aspect of this LCD and recommend it highly. Yes, it very expensive but it delivers and experience that is second to none.

    ***EDIT***

    I just wanted to say that it's been more than 6 months now (3/20/2018) and I have had no problems. I do think that the the brightness controls are pretty extreme. I have my brightness set to 45. You practically need sunglasses to look at the desktop when the brightness is set to 100. I wonder how many people crank it to 100, wait for the screen to go black, and then use that setting report on the backlight bleed? It's not a realistic expectation.

    Before I start, I'll let you know I have a preference towards Asus and I also got this monitor from Amazon Warehouse Deals. Gaming was tested on a GTX1080Ti.
    Reviewed as of 2-23-2018
    Keep in mind, this review is strictly about the monitor. Not about the seller or any feedback on packaging and shipping.

    ========Asus and I backstory========
    Before buying this monitor, the PG348Q, I've had the Asus ROG Swift PG278Q for almost 3 years and it has been a great monitor. I lucked out and haven't had any issues with it as a lot of other people have. So, here I am again, rolling the dice on another Asus monitor. These are fantastic monitors but be aware that build quality is an issue that plagues Asus to this day. What I'm saying is, don't be surprised or disappointed if the monitor you get has an issue. Amazon will graciously replace it. This new monitor isn't a replacement for said monitor, rather I will be running both together. The PG278Q is still a very high performance monitor even by today's standards. You can read my review on that monitor here: https://www.amazon.com/gp/review/RIW3GGTZB0QAI?ref_=glimp_1rv_cl

    ========Setup========
    Got this monitor in and immediately began setting it up. The monitor portion itself weighs quite a bit and the mount between the monitor and the tripod like stand was surprisingly heavy. Made it really feel like a solid piece of hardware. Very simple assembly, was smooth. As I mentioned above, this monitor came from Amazon Warehouse deals, meaning someone more than likely returned it for whatever reason. Since most of the factory packaging was there and some stuff was in sealed bags, I feel it is safe to assume it had never been setup or turned on.

    When you first turn on the monitor, it starts in HDMI input by default. Like a TV, you need to change the input through settings to Display-port; it won't auto detect. Just like my other monitor, it has the nice joystick on the back for navigating the menus. Very well done. This monitor has a max refresh rate of 100 fps, but 60 by default. Simply go into the monitors menu and hit the OC option to jump to 100Hz. Then in your card's control panel, be sure to select the 3440x1440 100Hz option.

    ========Thoughts on Performance========
    Gaming:
    I hopped into Battlefield 1 and wow it was incredible, such a wide view it looked great. Was easily able to max out the 100 fps on this monitor thanks to Battlefield being such a well optimized game.

    Next, I tried Rocket League. Rocket League has a lot of camera rotation and very fast movement. While this monitor is great, I'm not sure it is fully up to the task as my PG278Q is simply because of the amount of pixels it has to throw around. Nothing sits still in this game haha. Everything is changing every which way and I'm not positive the ultrawide is particularly useful for the game. Will stick to PG278Q on this one.

    And then I opened up PUBG. This game really made use of the ultrawide. Visibility is everything in this game and this monitor gives a real edge. You can see far and keep a huge area in view for potential victims haha.

    For another game, I opened up Star Wars Battlefront 2. This is another fast paced game but it looked great and performed quite well. I'm not entirely sure ultrawide is particularly useful for this game but nonetheless it was fun haha.

    Normal Use:
    The extra screen real estate is very helpful. I use the Creation Kit for Fallout 4 and photoshop a lot and this has been proven to be a hugely good purchase. I can have a window be the size of my other monitor and then also have other stuff going on. This was my main reason for purchasing it and it works great.

    ========Conclusion========

    Things I like:
    Small bezels
    Cool design
    Works as described
    Instant on, no Asus Logo

    Things I don't like:
    I wish it was black lol
    Menu buttons (not joystick) feel very cheap.

    Things I'm neutral towards:
    That red light thing at the bottom. Meh, I don't really care for it lol. Seems like a gimmick.
    It apparently has speakers? Didn't know that but my audio output changed to the monitor but I didn't hear anything.

    So yeah, that's my review so far. Going to update this over time so let's see how this goes.

    ======Updates=======

    9-25-2018 | Now 7 months later, still using the monitor as well as the PG278Q but this larger monitor has overtaken the other in just about everything! Haven't had any hardware issues. Still works perfectly like from day one.

    Before I start, I'll let you know I have a preference towards Asus and I also got this monitor from Amazon Warehouse Deals. Gaming was tested on a GTX1080Ti.

    Keep in mind, this review is strictly about the monitor. Not about the seller or any feedback on packaging and shipping.

    ========Asus and I backstory========

    ========Setup========
5.0 out of 5 stars Super Monitor
    Reviewed in Mexico on April 13, 2019
    Todo excelente, super monitor, un diseño espectacular, super bien empacado y protegido, calidad de imagen excelente, el unico pero que tal vez pondria serian la poca potencia en las bocinas, pero si consideras optar por un monitor asi y pagar lo que cuesta seguramente tienes en mente comprar un sistema de audio premium para complementar.

    4.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful monitor but suffering from some back light bleed
    Reviewed in Canada on January 9, 2018
    Very well constructed. larger than expected even though I've seen many reviews on this product it's still bigger in person than expected. Overclocked easily once I figured out how to do it lol. Beautiful image right out of the box. Make sure you use the display port cable in order to achieve the 100hz overclock. The on display controls are very easy to use. So after using this monitor for several days with many of my games I'm trying to decide if I can live with the back light bleed issue . It appears to vary from monitor to monitor and I guess it comes down to weather it affect you enough to keep what you have or rma. The only times I notice it is when I use a black wallpaper or when I play a space sims like elite dangerous . The backlight bleeding through is pretty noticeable and I'm somewhat disheartened, because it's such a expensive product. I knew before I purchases this monitor that ips monitors suffer from this issue but was hoping I be the person who didn't get a bad sample. So right now I need to find out what's involved in a return or rma or keep it. I don't want to rma it only to get back a refurbish model. I paid alot of hard earned money for this product and I would expect either a brand new replacement or my present one fixed and returned in a speedy maner. If I go the return route I don't want to pay restocking fees. So to wrap up my experience with this product . Its big, its beautiful, it's overclockable, it's everything you could ever want in a gaming monitor. Unfortunately backlight bleed could be a factor for you so it's a bit of a crap shoot ....good luck! **Update** after spending a bit more time with this monitor I can say with great confidence that its by far the best monitor I have ever used. I've accepted the light bleed issue, that's inherited in IPS monitors, and really its not that much of a factor for me any more, especially if you turn the brightness down to around 50 which is still quite bright for a IPS monitor, so its all good.

    3.0 out of 5 stars Great product, but the design just isn't for me.
    Reviewed in Canada on February 17, 2020
    Very glad when it came it. Once I opened the box I noticed the monitor was extremely thick and the stand only made it take up more space, it's also worth mentioning its an ultrawide so taking up space was something I was ready for givin its width, but I wasn't ready for the length it took up. Having a display this close to my face wasn't worth it. I thought maybe I could keep it for my xbox but it doesnt support it. The design is also very iffy for me, but that comes down to personal choice. Ended up buying the LG 27GL850-b and honestly never looked back. The only downside on the LG monitor is finding it at the right price.

    If anyone is interested in this, make sure you have the room on your desk first and that you are ready to settle for 100hz! (Once i tried 144hz it rlly changed the game no joke)
