-It was well packaged in the shipping box, assembly instructions pretty good, and screen size just right.
-Display quality is amazing, matte screen as well, no annoying reflections.
-Sound is great too, I don't plan to buy a sound bar. If I did I would get an Edifier R1280T, better than a sound bar.
-The initial set up is biased towards customers using cable, so watch out for that if things don't work. Also "Signal Type" means Antenna or Cable.
-If you can live with the limitations (it isn't very SMART, and actually has some dumb design decisions) ) it seems a very good TV.
This initial review is from looking at some DVD's (Midsomer Murders and Case Histories) using 5 wire component cabling to an older Magnavox DVD player. Colors were natural realistic with the default settings. The face stubble and head hairs are tack sharp, and a Norwegian wool sweater looked real. PBS over the air stations at 1080i are noticeably better. If you are a photographer you will like this TV.
There were some frustrating problems:
1.One leg of the stand was not properly in the keying slot, and this caused the front of stand to not touch the table on one side. Easily fixed, after finding it.
2.The initial viewing of Midsomer Murders had everyone on the screen with green faces and not much blue or yellow on the screen, It turned out to be the 3 wire 3.5mm connector not being pushed in all the way, it makes a click when fully seated.
3.If you use an Antenna, the default for the initial set up is Cable, so after the long scan the result will be zero channels. If you go away while autoscan is happening and return later the TV auto shut off will have activated and the TV is then in a strange mode where the power button on the remote no longer works. Remedy-cycle the input power and turn off the Auto Power Off feature, there is also some evidence that the TV
should not be plugged into a surge suppressor power strip which may cause the problem..
4.We have a TV repeater station a few miles away for PBS and other over the air stations. The tuner on this TV works a bit better than the old digital to analog box tuner and gets 23 stations. It doesn't have an on screen menu of stations/programs-too bad. But the only stations we watch are two OPB (PBS) and occasionally ABC, NBC, or CBS so it isn't a disaster. The unwatched channels can be removed from the list.
5.The screws for the base should be attached to the base or the bag in which the base is packed, NOT the large TV bag. To make them easier to find.
Update: I have to power cycle it sometimes when it doesn't power on. Otherwise it works fine for Network TV with an antenna, DVD, and Amazon Prime Videos (I use a chromebook wi fi and connect to #2 HDMI connector which passes through audio).
The sound is great, no need to buy a sound bar. Normal resolution DVD's are also great no need to get a Blue Ray system. (It's the content that is important!!).
We recognize that it's because of the amazing advances in technology that we have TVs like this Sony, with its beautiful, clear picture unlike any set we've ever experienced... now that it's functioning (thanks to little bro!), we absolutely love this set! We live on a fixed income, so I did a simple google search of "5 best TVs under $500" which popped up a couple of Vizio models, an LG, a TCL, and this one. But here we go again... terms like "UHD", "LED", "HDTV", "ROKU", "Ultra HD", "Smart TV" are Greek to us! We knew the name "Sony" though, and the review talked about it being a best seller because of its clarity, high resolution images, and 48" screen size which is rare in its price range (things we understood!), going on to say you can use its USB ports to plug in your Chromecast or Fire TV and its HDMI to connect it to your other devices and gaming consoles, but that you don't need any of that because it comes with built in wifi, allowing you to stream Netflix, YouTube, etc. (we didn't understand ANY of that!) With the blessing of little brother, we forked over our $453.44 (kicking myself that I hadn't clicked that "submit order" button when the price was $427.44!)
When it was delivered, I couldn't believe how light it was! (We thought we'd died and gone to heaven back in '09 when little brother bought the "latest & greatest" and donated his old '97 Mitsubishi big screen to us... at 3'-8"W, 4'-3"H and over 1 FOOT depth, we dubbed it "The Monster" - that was the TV that finally bit the dust after serving valiantly, so - needless to say - getting the same width in a TV that was only going to take up 2'-5"H, including its 3"H stand... which I actually attached myself!, and a screen just ONE-HALF INCH thick (the base is 10-1/4" long... we weren't interested in the wall-mount feature) seemed incredible to us. I'd been a bit concerned about such a "big ticket" item being shipped to us versus picking it up at the retail level, but it was very securely packaged/protected.
BUT... if you're a dinosaur like we are, you'll panic at the brief illustrated "Setup Guide", accompanied by the 54 page Operating Instructions manual! That's when we called little brother (oh, heck - his name is Mike!), and he barely looked at the instructions as he began hooking things up (we needed our DVD player connected as well so we were ready for our shared bowl of popcorn with the grandkids while watching their favorite during the next sleepover). One thing he almost immediately realized is that we needed a... well, $20 "6 ft High-Speed HDMI Cable" is what the Radio Shack receipt says! Quick run to the store, then paging through our cable remote's instruction manual to get everything in sync. Took 2-1/2 hours (of course, that included the store trip and a lot of chit chat over a couple of cold ones!), and though I don't know HOW he did it, all I can say is we are enjoying the heck out of the results! But if you're technically disinclined, make sure you have your own "Mike" on hand lend an assist (ours is already spoken for!)

Tough to cast content from your phone/ other devices if they're not a Sony - something I know for a fact a Vizio has no issue with. Sure Sony Vs. Vizio, but then its all down to the convenience factor. I spent about a $100 more on this 2016 model than a 50in Vizio 2017 model - and now I have spend another $30-$60 on a ChromeCast/ Roku/ Fire TV stick equivalent.
If you really want a truly connected Sony, spend the extra couple of hundred and get the higher version - I'd return this if it wasnt such a pain to pack up and carry to the UPS drop-off location. (Hey, no jugement!)
