It took me a few years to get here and I'm here to tell you that this is one of the best sounding wireless headphones out there and stellar noise cancelling feature without the heavy pressure on your ear drums (synonymous with the Bose QC35)
Let's start with looks and feel. The headphones feel solid. I did listen to the MDR1000X and it is well on par except with the added features of gesture controls, ambient noise and fold-flat mainly. The ear cups are a bit deeper compared to the MDR1000X so you ears don't touch the inside of the headphone cups. I do like the semi matte finish giving it a professional look. The toggle button for the music controls is amazing and I wonder why other headphones do not have it. This headphone does not fold flat, but twists a bit to conform to your ears. I would have loved that feature but I found some people were having issues with the MDR1000X breaking up in the twisting section. I didn't see any issues relating to this for the MDR-100ABN. These are also very comfy on your ears even with glasses. Very very comfortable.
Now, the sound coming the MDR-100ABN will absolutely blow you away. I won't get to the specifics as there are numerous online reviews on this. For all of you that have android phones, I would highly recommend you download the Poweramp music player as it takes this headphone to a whole new other level. I'm not advertising for Poweramp but I'm very particular about my music and having been through quite a bit of music players, Poweramp beats the competition hands down. (Poweramp is not available on iPhone) What blew me away was the noise cancelling feature without the heavy pressure on your ear drums. Really great and that pressure is always non-existent. I take the commuter and subway trains to/from work and these fared absolutely well. This was one feature that a lot of headphones are missing plus there is no difference in the sound quality when it is on or off.
I've traded my Bose Soundlink for these as I could not find a true wireless noise cancelling headphones with superb qualities. If you are looking for no frills headphones with excellent sound quality, stellar noise cancelling feature without the heavy pressure on your ear drums, don't mind the non folding flat and solid build, this is the one.
With over 20+ hours of playtime, you have plenty of time to recharge in between. I saw some people complaining about the lack of low power notifications. While it doesn't do that, there is a flashing red light by the power button when the battery is low. Also, at any time during listening, press the power button momentarily and a very nice lady with voice prompt will tell you the status of the battery.
Update 09/15/2017 - The first time I connected the headphones via bluetooth, I had intermittent connectivity. I even returned the first one and bought another one only to find out the following. Sony has 'Priority on sound quality' or 'Priority on stable connection' modes, with default connection on the first mode when initially connected. See link http://helpguide.sony.net/mdr/100abn/v1/en/contents/TP0001034995.html on how to change to stable connection especially if you don't have LDAC connection.
I also love the noise cancelling feature as I get to interact with it even more. Keeping in mind that it does not totally eliminate outside noise. It constantly analyzes environmental ambient sound components and automatically selects the most effective noise canceling mode.
Update 09/24/2017 - it's not the headphones, it's the darn case. The case that comes with the headphones shape like a pancake football to the point that I can never hold the case without slipping and the cover material made it worse. I ended up purchasing one that is a full case ballistic nylon one.
Upgraded from a pair of Samsung Level On Noise Cancelling Headphones and these absolutely blow them out of the water.
Sound: Very balanced. Seems to do well with a variety of music (pop, electronic, classic rock, r&b). Not too over the top bass wise either, compared with Beats headphones. Sounds great with bluetooth and better with the 3.5mm cable. Definitely needs to be powered on for the best sound when using the 3.5mm cable.
Fit: Comfortable, but a little tight on the sides. I expect these to loosen up over time as they break in. Ear cups and headband have plenty of padding and swivel to fit perfectly and create a nice seal. Have worn for 2+ hours at a time and could have continued wearing them.
Construction: High quality plastic. Very flexible. The finish could attract some scratches, but the hard carrying case should help.
Bluetooth: I used to get occasional drops with my previous headphones, but these haven't dropped the signal while paired with the Nexus 6P. Seems like these also have great range when roaming about. Have gotten 40+ feet away with few drops. Also, NCF pairing works pretty flawlessly.
Noise cancelling: Definitely an upgrade over the Samsung Level On headphones, but not as good as Bose or the new Sony 1000X. Does a great job with ambient noise, not as great with voices. For the price ($199), they are hard to beat.
Conclusion: I was seriously looking at the Bose QC35 and Sony 1000X, but these went on sale and I jumped. I'm glad I did. At that price point, these provide great sound, comfort, and noise cancelling. 100% satisfied with my purchase and would recommend these to anyone.
ME: I am not an audiophile. My ears are 40-ish years old and I believe I have typical hearing. I travel on a long haul flight about once a year. I was looking for over-the-ear (OTE) headphones that I would use 85% of the time at home and 15% of the time when travelling. I had some ear buds and on-the ear headphones I had used on previous trips but decided it’s time to go OTE with some real noise cancelling. I wanted to go wireless and I know the limitations of Bluetooth. Frankly, I don’t find the Bluetooth experience that terrible (see sentence #1 – I’m not an audiophile).
I watched a dozen video reviews and read the same number of reviews (you know, “best wireless headphones of 2016!!!”). Obviously, everyone pointed to the Bose QC35’s as the best noise cancelling headphones on the market. The new Sony MDR1000X headphones were equally regarded (if not, better by some people).
I picked FOUR headphones to try. Let me put my subjective assessment of their sound later.
** ROUND ONE: Sony Premium Noise Cancelling, Bluetooth Headphone, Black (MDR1000X/B) **
I picked these first because they had all the nifty features. Specifically, you could swipe the outside of the ear cup to control your music (skip, back, volume, etc.). It was a bit finicky. They were very comfortable. Noise cancelling using the vacuum test was quite impressive. Helpful voice prompts. Modern design. You can turn the noise cancelling on or off. They are plastic and leather or “leather” – not sure – but they feel very premium. The most expensive of all the headphones I tried.
** ROUND TWO: Bose QuietComfort 35 Wireless Headphones, Noise Cancelling - Black **
The venerable QC35. I had to try them. I mean – every headphone is being compared to them. Somewhat old school in their design and controls. Not particularly good looking. However, these were definitely the most comfortable of all of these headphones I tried. They just fit great with the tilted ear cups. Noise cancelling with the vacuum test was as impressive as the Sony MDR1000X. Helpful voice prompts. The noise cancelling is always on. Controls are buttons and you’re going to have to spend some time training your fingers to feel and use them. Also very expensive but about $50 less than those Sony’s above. Bose has a quaint little phone app to control some basic settings on the headphones – no equalizer or sound quality controls. You’ll know these are plastic but the ear cups are soft, comfortable leather wrapped cushions.
** ROUND THREE: Sony H.ear on Wireless Noise Cancelling Headphone MDR100ABN/B **
I guess this would be the “cheap” pair in the bunch. At the time, about $100 less than the Bose and $150 less than the Sony MDR1000X. Also comfortable and bit smaller than their Sony big brother. Noise cancelling was good but not as good as the two above. You can turn the noise cancelling on or off. One glitchy thing I experienced was they wouldn’t always automatically connect back to my phone (Nexus 6P). The others did. I like the basic control toggle that you can feel, click forward/backward or click down in various combinations. You can find it easily by touch.
** ROUND FOUR: Sennheiser Momentum 2.0 Wireless with Active Noise Cancellation- Black **
Unique retro look and unlike all of the above, they are made of metal and leather. Very premium. I think the only plastic is in the round knobs that hold the ear cups. I am actually not sure if those knobs are plastic, could be metal. Noise cancelling is very good but not quite as good as the top two. It is always on, no switch. It’s a toss-up as to whether they beat or just meet the H.ear model. These seem to fit the least tightly. They just softly press against your head (and I have a bigger head). The ear cups are leather wrapped, soft cushy material. If you have a small head, there may be issues with fit. These aren’t tight.
The only other pair I wanted to try were the Plantronics Back Beat Pro 2 that were recently released. Amazon didn't have them. Best Buy didn't have them. I didn't like the way you turn them on/off though.
CHARACTERISTICS OF ALL OF THEM…
--- All of them come with a corded option in case the battery dies. No noise cancelling without battery power though.
--- I experienced no problems with the Bluetooth connection on any of these.
--- Your ears will get warm after a while with all of them. I was able to go the longest with the Bose before I started to feel it.
---- All of them have sound leakage. All of them have enough that its noticeable in a quiet setting. This disappointed me but then I thought about the fact that on a plane, the engine noise is going to drown it out.
---- They all have battery life that is going to last an entire long haul flight including the waiting when connecting flights. I’m not going to wear them continuously.
So… why did I end up with the Sennheisers and not those amazing noise cancelling masterpieces? Sound quality. The Sennheisers sound great. They were the last pair I tried. I put them on, played various types of music and quickly realized they were the way to go for me.
NEED THE BEST NOISE CANCELLING?
If you need headphones primarily for transportation situations where noise is a problem (planes, trains, etc.), get one of the top two (I would pick the Sony’s). They have outstanding noise cancelling capabilities. Don't get me wrong, they sound pretty great too.
NEED BETTER SOUND QUALITY AND OCCASIONAL NOISE CANCELLING?
If you are like me and the majority of your usage time will be in environments that aren’t noisy (like at home), get the Sennheisers... and the build quality, wow! If those are out of your price range, the Sony H.ears are a good alternative. They also sound better than the two big guys. I got them when they were $229. I had a friend try the top three and he picked the H.ear model as the best sounding. He didn’t get to try the Sennheisers.
TIP FOR ANDROID USERS: I tried a few equalizer apps. I chose an app called “Equalizer FX” by devdnua and it further improved the sound of my streaming music.
Hope this helps someone out!
Top reviews from other countries
On initial receipt of the H.EARs I was impressed that they came with a 3.5mm audio cable for AUX use(gets a lot of use with my XBOX), a charge cable, and a semi rigid zipper case for keeping your headphones safe when not in use. The charge cable is a standard size micro USB which is great since in the past I have owned other wireless headphones and they had a proprietary power connector that you had to keep track of and tote with you everywhere. This one you can plug in your headphones wherever a micro USB can be found which in this day and age is, well...everywhere. That being said the battery life on these is about 20 hours new with the noise cancelling on, so its not like you will need to scramble for a charge as long as you are diligent. Even if that isn't the case they will still work without power in the standard corded fashion, albeit to a lower standard (no noise cancelling and the sound isn't as phenomenal).
The buttons are well placed and easy to find without taking the headphones off, the volume up and down is easy to find along with the call answer/play, next track and previous track buttons are smooth and easy to use. The pairing on these headphones was fast and easy allowing my Blackberry to quickly sync up and play tunes, sometimes Bluetooth is difficult to use but not this one. Overall for these headphones my thoughts are that they are comfortable, offer great sound quality, are intuitive and robust. The only con I can see is that they are a little steep on price but once you put them on and use them as designed they perform the task incredibly and are well worth the investment.
