I had a couple pieces of plexiglass from glass shop, which I had on hand as I use these as a storm window over my casement window exterior glass. I had bought some 70% off cull wood trim from the “orange “ box store for my grandkids water tables I had made them..so the extra trim worked out perfect.
Made a simple box frame with screws (and glue just in case) on the wood frame. Skill saw cuts through plexiglass and will leave room at bottom for AC exhaust strip. First frame I cut a circular hole through plexiglas with a hundred drill holes, then screwed exhaust guard on to plexiglass, as hose clicks in nicely to exhaust sleeve. Plexiglass I used was 3/16 super thick and can be sharp and brittle.. Second unit I am waiting on delivery as it has an oval exhaust hole not a round. Will probably just cut plexiglass short on bottom to accommodate exhaust sleeve in the wood frame I pre built for next unit and screw exhaust sleeve onto my window frame unit I built for casement window.
Pre drilled all holes through wood and plexiglass, and used one inch screws ( Box of screws I bought at a yard sale for a $1). I can still shut the crank window if I position the frame in to accommodate closure.Happy the window frame unit I built from trim and plexiglass fits nicely just in the inside of the casement windows. I spray painted the frame brown on the second frame, and put a few screws through the frame into the inside of the window. These screws can be removed with the frame ..come fall, or could just leave in. The plexiglass still allows good visibility out of windows. And the casement window closes and locks when the unit is off/removed.
I have a square as I can’t cut a straight right angle without one, and handsaw, but I used a small battery circular saw, a couple clamps, and my little battery drill were perfect. While being basically handier than the average woman, but by no means super skilled, I was glad (and desperate) to get this unit on and cooling.
It works wonderful, easy to operate (I do suggest to read the handbook, lot of good tips on operating, draining, error code and storage). Not sure on energy usage yet..will find out more on that.
So very happy that I purchased another bigger unit for my main floor. Wondered why I waited so long.
Also bought some weather stripping for my bedroom door and put a weighted door draft stopper at the door bottom..(Run your hand around your door once you have it up and running for 24 hours for drafts).
Saw online to use emergency silver plastic “blanket” cut to size over my sun facing French doors to reflect sun/heat ..this helps also. The only negative was I did notice a slight plastic smell from unit the first time I had it finally installed at midnight and operating full speed. But smell seemed to be gone after first night.
Update:the two weeks it was running hard 24/7 and still 90 degrees out- my electric bill went up $100.’’but totally worth it, and now I am ready for the next heat wave.
** Now I use the timer feature,& only use limited times when extremely hot, as it cools quickly for sleeping, then our temps can drop drastically in the night. Before AC I usually opened windows to draw in cool very EARLY am air, then shut windows after fans drew in cool air for a few hours. Still do this but now only need the unit from 2 or 3pm in downstairs to bedtime, and bedroom unit an hour before bed to 1 or 2 am., then open windows with my fans to let the cool night air in”.

ORIGINAL REVIEW:
The central air in my house is broken and it would cost me nearly $7,000 to fix it so I decided to pass and buy this portable air conditioner and it gets the job done for a far less price. It’s only been a couple of days since I’ve used this thing and it’s been a LIFE SAVER. It gets up to 110F where I am and this ac unit cools down my room within minutes! I set it to turn off after 1 hour to save energy. I don’t expect this thing to cool down my entire living room but I always go to my room after work and I’m satisfied so far. My only complaints is the less than helpful instruction manual to set this up but you can get an idea on how to install this thing from YouTube, my other complaint is that it’s fairy loud but honestly the benefit far outweighs the cons so it gets 5 stars in my book. I’ll be sure to update my review if I encounter any problems, but as of now I’d highly recommend this unit if you want to beat the summer heat every year.
UPDATE 08/19/18: It has been about 2 months since I’ve bought and used the unit now and I still stand by what I said about this device, it is a LIFE SAVER! My area has been consistently hot all summer with temperatures ranging from 99F - 107! And not once did I ever feel the summer heat indoors. This was definitely worth the purchase and is an amazing investment for future summers to come.
UPDATE 05/17/21: It has been 3 years since I’ve owned this portable air conditioner and I firmly believe this is by far one of my greatest investments. It has reached upwards of 119 degrees where I live over the past 3 years of owning this AC unit and it’s been a LIFESAVER. I do not regret buying this and I can say with full confidence I would immediately buy a new one should this one fail; as things stand however, I don’t see it failing anytime soon!
Pros:
- Okay price/value
- It's not super noisy (its also not super quiet, but i've heard much worse)
- Relatively easy to put together all things considered, works on horizontal and vertical sliding windows
- You don't need to empty the water reservoir very often (like once or twice a season) which is awesome
Cons:
- the window kit requires cutting, etc. It works fine but how well depends on your actual window. You might need to add tape or foam or screws yourself.
- its 6000BTU and you'll get 6000 BTU performance despite the advertisement of 10000BTU. This is because there's 2 standards, and the old standard does not work well for indoor/portable units. Anyway, expect 6000BTU out of this, no more.
- the exhaust duct is NOT insulated . this means you lose a lot of efficient as it heats up the room as its trying to cool it. its heats up a lot!
All in all if you want this unit to perform properly you have to replace the duct by an insulated one. If like me you don't want to afford that right off the bat you can wrap it with some insulation material then a reflective material. On my picture this is synthetic sleeping bag insulation then good old kitchen grade aluminum foil. Looks ugly, its fragile but it works very, very well. Probably adds 30% performance and the duct is now always cold.
