Nice Design, Mounting Options (Get Creative)
Overall, the Ring Doorbell 2 Pro works very well and was a worthy upgrade for my existing Ring Doorbell 2.The image when zooming in on far away things will only be as detailed as any reasonable person would expect when zooming into any other image. Downloading the video might be advisable for catching details at the beginning of the videos. The beginning of a motion alert video can be glitchy while the stream starts. I presume this isn't a limitation of the device, as much as it is the video buffering and streaming in the app. This isn't specific to this model either.Mounting Rant:The mounting can be easy and the instructions are clear for standard mounting configurations, but this wasn't the case for me. I moved recently and the mounting configuration I had used before wasn't going to work anymore. This was new territory for me (and for Ring). I concede now that this isn't the product's fault, because Ring does offer mounting options for most configurations, but none immediately worked for my unique need. The Amazon Ring Security Team Advocate jumped on the opportunity to find a solution. Although it successfully addressed my needs. We were trying to solve for something different than a mounting solution usually calls for.You see the Ring Doorbell 2 Pro corner and wedge mounting kits work well together, but double stacking wedges gets tricky because of missing recess spaces for the screws. I had to get creative, but not for a lack of the mounting versatility or Amazon Ring Security Team Advocate's willingness to make it right. Thank you Ring.Experience:On 4/3/2021, I just received it a day or so after it was released. I wanted to upload some photos for others. It was delivered in a small box and it was very light. At first, I was very skeptical about the size of the package. I'll update my review after I use it for a while.I usually don't make assumptions, but it is pretty clear already I'm going to have a mounting issue. It came with a single corner mount kit, but no other wedge or flat mounting bracket like my older Ring Doorbell. I don't want the camera pointing at an angle and without any other mounting option, this is going to be tricky.I have a long-time gripe that Amazon Ring for not having a tall standoff mounting kit that is taller to allow the camera's view to get up and over a thick facade, such as molding or brick just right outside the door molding at the existing doorbell wiring. The new Ring Doorbell Pro 2 has a curved back that may make it easier to pull off a home without a proper mounting kit that allows for the device to sit recessed in.Ordering a flat mounting kit will need to be my next contemplation. That or wait for the community to 3D design a feasible taller standoff. Amazon needs to sell taller mounts and includes a flat-mount plate. On 4/4/2021, an Amazon Ring Security Team Advocate contacted me to help resolve my concerns. On 4/5/2021, with Ring's assistance, I will be alternating reverse stacking two wedge mounting brackets. The hope is to get some height on the Ring doorbell. Picture to soon follow.Side Note: I learned that (1) backing plate isn't required and the device is designed to be mounted with or without the included wedge mounting bracket. (2) the curved back design is to aid with cooling. Presumably because of the extra compact design. (3) I appreciate and learn the battery kit (included with my model) is installed in line with the indoor doorbell transformer and chime. Saving space and spreading out the components that may dissipate heat.On 4/15/2021, the Amazon Ring Security Team Advocate reshipped the delayed two-wedge kit. I also ended up receiving the first that same day and receiving the second the following day. Very proactive resolution. On 4/17/2021, I reread the new wedge mount and Ring Doorbell 2 Pro instructions, then began to install the alternating reverse stacking two wedge mounting brackets. The instructions anticipated only stacking wedge and corner kits. The wedge would typically be stacked first and the corner would be second. Because of this, there is a recessed hole on the top and bottom for the head of the second screw in the corner kit to make room for the device to be then placed in the larger recess space without the screws being in the way. This is not on the wedge. I had to double-tap through the main mounting hole to stack. This isn't usually advisable, because there wouldn't be room to place screw anchors or risk splitting a wood frame. This worked out in a way for me, because I have an aluminum frame around my door, so I didn't use the screw anchors. Before realizing this, I spent a great deal of time trying to figure out what screws would work better for my mount configuration because I didn't know none of the diagrams would work for not having a hole with a recessed space for the screw head.

I had the Ring 2 before this and it would not connect to the Router WiFi in another room, I had to use a wifi extender and for what ever reason the Ring 2 would go off line every so many days. I would have to unplug the wifi extender to reset it to get the Ring 2 to reconnect. The view range on the Ring 2 I did not like as I could not see the floor of the porch like I now can with the Ring 2 Pro. Now that I have the Ring 2 Pro, the video picture is much better, but what I love the most is that the thing has yet to go off line. It is reliable such that it catches everything as it never goes off line (at least not yet and it has been a week or so now).

I also like that it loads faster in the app than the Ring 2. I have it set to take a photo every 30 seconds, which is nice and already saved me on a delivery in which the delivery app said that the driver made the delivery, but there was no motion that put the camera on at that time, but since I had the photo taken every 30 seconds I was able to provide the photos to the delivery app to prove that there was no delivery car or driver on the driveway or my porch showing photos taken every 30 seconds. Had I not had this new Ring Pro 2 that stays online and takes those photos, I would have been out $40 for that delivery. So this new door bell already has saved me $40.

The motion detection range is also nice that I can have it cover the lawn and drive way, but clearly not the side walk so when people walk their dog it does not go off. But, if someone is in my lawn it will go off. I also love that this has the recording live all the time, so when it detects motion it has many seconds before the motion was detected so that I have the person coming on the drive up to the porch and can see the the entire time later. The Ring 2 I had before, at times did not have the motion detected right away and the video would come on when a delivery person was near the front door dropping the box off. This at times made it hard to see the face of the person, the video did not get them from far away.

Now that I have this new Ring Pro 2, I can see the people coming from far away and since they normally do not see the ring door bell until they get close people are not looking away. This provides much better video to show police if ever needed, to see who the person that came to the door was. Huge benefit of the Ring 2 Pro.

I am thinking of getting a Ring Spotlight or Ring Floodlight next with the video, but if they do not have this level of video I may get other Ring Pro 2 devices and install as this video quality and reliability is really good.

The installation I had problems with at first, because the old transformer was not getting enough power to the door bell. The Ring Pro 2 takes more power than the Ring 2 did, or the battery in the Ring 2 was enough power to make up for it.

The issue I had with my old transformer on the door bell power line, was that when I put the Ring 2 Pro on it, the inside door chime bell that is a old mechanical style would not ring. It did for the old Ring 2, but not for the Ring Pro 2. The Ring Pro 2 requires a power adapter be put on the mechanical chime inside or the inside Chime would make a loud buzzing noise when the door bell was rang and it would not stop for minutes, and then the chime inside kept going off every so many seconds. When I put the inside Chime power adapter back on the inside chime, it would not make the buzz sound, but it also would not ring. The app said there was low voltage, at 15v.

We took off the old transformer in the basement for the doorbell, it was hooked up to a light blub socket in the basement. Very odd place to put it, and was hard to find it. Once we changed that old transformer to one for the Ring Door Bell Pro 2, it fixed the problems. The door bell rang inside on the chime correctly.

The error message on the device health in the app for the voltage transformer did not go away, it still says in the app there is only 15V to the Ring Pro 2, but the direct feed from the new transformer to the Ring Door Bell 2 is direct and all the functions work perfect. No idea why the error message is still on the device health in the app, it has been many days now, it is still there, but everything works fine.

The night mode, color night vision, and HDR, etc. I had to change the settings to get the best picture at night as I have a light by it that is always on and a white wall by it, so I could not get the ideal picture, but got it to work best after trying many variations of the settings.

The door bell chime inside, for the mechanical bell, was also wired odd to my settings, we tried many different changes to it, but turns out that had we just changed the transformer from the start it would all worked.

I would say just buy the new transformer and plan to install it with the Ring Pro 2, now having this work perfect and never going off line, and all the functions work perfect. I did not get the transformer at first and wanted to save a few bucks, but trying to do it that way caused huge frustration. If I had it all to do over again, I would replace the transformer if it is old, and or if you did not get a new one that you know for sure has the power needed to the Ring Pro 2. That way you know the power feed is correct and chances are it will save you half a day of trouble shooting as well as issues down the road if it goes off line or has trouble with the night vision video.

Also, finding the old transformer may be tricky, mine was in the basement on a old light socked, but at first I was looking in the wall by the inside chime bell, it was not there. All in all this is really great new product and I do not see ever needing to change it. The old Ring 2, I had problems with from near the start. I wish I had this new Ring Pro 2 from the start.

I've used Ring cameras and the alarm system for years, but this is my first doorbell camera. Overall I'm pretty happy with the Pro 2 experience.

*** INSTALLATION ***

This is replaced a standard wired doorbell. The basic installation is simple enough and the Pro 2 powered up fine -- but failed to properly ring my existing (non-Ring) chime. Didn't take long to discover my old wired system was 10v and not the required 16v for the Pro 2. I've lived in this house for over 20 years (didn't install the old doorbell) and though my old-school doorbell chime claims it also requires 16v, apparently it didn't.

Nonetheless, replacing the old 10v doorbell transformer with a new 16v transformer was a piece of cake (but another $30 expense and a trip to Home Depot). Save yourself some trouble and (unlike me) actually verify that you have a 16v-24v wired system ahead of time.

*** RING SETUP ***

After installation, the setup was an easy 10-minute job. It probably helps that I have years of experience with the Ring system itself and the cameras setups, but it's all pretty simple if you just follow the prompts.

*** PERFORMANCE ***

With minor tweaks to the settings, the motion detection has been flawless. The system correctly alerts and records motion, and so far I have not experienced any false or missed detections.

The "package delivery" feature is really cool and has worked exactly as promised.

The camera range of field is exceptional for a doorbell installation - actually a much wider range than I was expecting.

Video quality is very good. I'd say it's a bit better than the Ring Stick-Up Camera quality. Close-up (e.g. someone within 10 feet of the doorbell) is very good. The quality drops fairly quickly beyond 25 feet or so. Seems reasonable for a doorbell camera.

*** WHAT I HATE ***

Apparently, a well-known issue is that when someone presses the doorbell button and the Ring event is triggered (signal sent to the chime, video starts, etc.) -- then the doorbell button is useless for the next 30-seconds. What this means in the real world is that someone pushes the button and they don't get a response within 20 seconds or so, they push the button again -- and nothing happens... Unlike a traditional doorbell that will ring the chime every time the button is pushed.

I was not aware of this before purchasing and it's disappointing. There is no technical reason why the chime cannot be triggered every time the button is pushed. It's just a bad design.

*** CONCLUSION ***

Despite the one flaw described above, I like the doorbell and we will keep it. The performance is on par with what I was expecting, based upon my previous Ring experiences. The system reliably detects motion and visitors, and reliably records pretty good video of each event -- which is really the entire purpose of the system. There is some room for improvement with the next version though - and I'll keep my eye on the changes whenever it's released.
