From the manufacturer

Mantis Electric Touch-Start Tiller

The Benefits of Electric

Quiet, instant-starting, 3-speed 540 watt motor has no emissions and no carbon footprint. Use in the garden anytime without disturbing the neighbors.

With the Light Weight and Power of our Gas Models

Ultra-light at just 21 pounds, the compact 9 inch width allows you to get into tight spaces around your yard that larger tillers simply cannot get to. The curvy tines are specially designed to break up clumps to create fluffy soil. Digs down 10 inches deep! Simply turn the tines around to shallow cultivate the top 2 to 3 inches of soil or to power weed your garden.

Built for Convenience and Ease-of-Use

Comfortable grips for fatigue-free use and a quiet motor with 3 preset speeds makes this tiller a breeze to operate. Plus every Mantis Tiller features convenient fold down handles for easy transport and storage.

Hard soil and stubborn sod are no match for the power and durability of a Mantis

One of the keys to Mantis' matchless performance is a solid worm gear transmission set within a one-piece cast aluminum housing that turns the tines at up to 240 RPM. This allows such a lightweight tool to perform with so much power and efficiency.

As you can see on the cutaway image at left, transmission components like the solid brass gear that's used to drive the worm gear are more than tough enough to enable the tiller to power through the toughest sod and compact soil. Mantis rigorously tests its tillers by forcing them to operate in soil and rock-filled bins for hour after hour with no rest. They're put through more stress than they will ever see in your garden.

This same power train is also indispensable when power weeding and shallow cultivating all season long.

Expect many years of loyal service; the Mantis Tiller is made like things 'used to be made' and you will appreciate the quality and craftsmanship that went into it.

We got so tired of taking in our old tiller for maintenance when it wouldn't start nearly every year. I was so done with a gas motor. Having this lightweight electric tiller is fantastic. It doesn't have quite the power of our bigger gas one. It bounces a bit when it first gets started on compacted soil, but with just a little patience it gets just as deep and does an incredible job. And it's soooo light weight. much easier on the back and easier to get in place in small spaces. So glad we switched to this unit. Highly recommend if you're getting up in age like we are too.

Plenty of power. If you hit a rock or brick and it can't turn, it pops a circuit breaker which stops the motor. Once you get the object out of the tines, press the circuit breaker on the back of the unit to be able to start up again. I found the clearing tool to be of limited use, it's easier just to take the tines off and clear them of debris like long grass or vines.
.
You use the unit by pulling backwards, and so can adjust how deep you are tilling easily.

Without the kickstand, you have to lay the unit down when not using it. Even with the kickstand, the tines rest on the ground when you're idled. I prefer the kickstand. In any case, be aware you probably want to hang this thing up to store it.

I bought this to till a small area of my lawn to use as a vegetable garden. Initially it bounced up and down on the surface of the grass and had to be held steady in one place before it would dig down. Once through the turf it dug up the (medium heavy clay) soil very well. It is very powerful for its size, and takes a fair amount of "muscle" to control it.

Assembly was a bit fiddly, but not too difficult. One of the bolts on the part that holds the two handles apart came loose in use and was lost somewhere in the newly tilled soil! I replaced it with a nut and bolt I found in my garage junk box which work OK, despite not being a lock nut. Warning, check the bolts after a brief use.

I would say four stars for tilling already broken soil, but the description specifically says it's good for turning lawn into flower beds, which it isn't, though it works, albeit slowly with a lot of repetition over already worked areas. If you have the energy, it would be better to break up the turf with a spade first then break it down with the tiller.

Electric is the way to go as long as your gardens are within reach of an electrical outlet. Having used a gas Mantis before I would say that electric is the preferable option. The downside of small tillers is tilling in damp soil which begins to gum it up, roots, and rocks. Simply flipping it over and cleaning it out and flipping it back up with instant on is a dream. With gas you have to turn off the motor, clean it out, prime, and try to restart. This saves a lot of time, as gas engines over time can become a little harder to start and you don't have to worry about refilling with gas. The gas may have a little more power but the electric makes up for it in convenience, reduced vibration, reduced noise, and maneuverability.

Having a cord is not too big a deal with the slower work of tilling. Having another battery to deal with can be a pain and you don't have to worry about running out of power in the middle of a job.

The noise reduction is a game changer as you can find kitchen tools that are louder than this thing. Your neighbors will thank you and you just might notice your wife beginning to take over the tilling chores.

The handle bars could be made of a heavier gauge metal but are adequate to the task.

Convenience, noise reduction, vibration reduction, maneuverability, and enough power to get the job done - electric is the way to go.

Had a 2 cylinder Mantis for over 10 years and liked it but as it got older it was next to impossible to start. Very aggravating. Bought this electric just because of the auto start plus no oil or gas needed. Used it today and love it. Very powerful and I can even use it in my raised beds. Never had to go above the first level of power. Seems very well made. Thought it was supposed to come with a kick stand but it didn't. Not a big issue but would have been better. I recommend this mantis for all your small gardening needs.

I have completely tore up the grass in my front yard (40' x 17') with this and it has handled it no problem. Every once in a while a stone gets caught in the blades, I had to stop and unwind the grass from around the axle and it needs to cool off from time to time, but otherwise surprisingly strong for the size. Very easy to handle (I am 60 yo and 5'5" woman). Next door neighbor had edging tools etc from one she used to have and gave them to me. Sweet!

Awful. Truly awful. Tines damaged, handles falling apart, bolts falling out and now something is wrong with the engine.

Contacted customer service and was given a list of people who would "service" it. Nearest one quite a drive for me.

I don't want to drive somewhere to get this worthless junk serviced, I want a full refund.

Buy a garden fork instead. Anything would be better than this thing.

Tears up the ground! Digs nice and deep with very little effort on my part. I'm about 115 pounds, and I can handle this unit without feeling like it is getting away from me. No gas, oil, or plugs to worry about. Fairly easy to assemble, and really easy to use. My garden is going to be so much nicer next year. I bought the kickstand too. Like it as well.
