What is LH surge?

Luteinizing Hormone (LH) is one of the hormones produced by the pituitary gland. It is secreted at very low levels throughout your menstrual cycle. Once a developing egg follicle reaches a certain size, Luteinizing Hormone secretion surges to high levels. This hormone surge is what triggers ovulation about 24 to 48 hours later. Ovulation is the release of a mature egg from the ovary. It signals the beginning of your fertile period.

If your cycle length is normally 26 days, the chart indicates testing should begin on day 10.

When to begin testing?

Determine the length of your menstrual cycle before test (The length of the cycle is the duration from your first menstrual bleeding day to the day before the next bleeding begins).

Please refer to the cycle chart to determine when you should start testing. If you do not know your cycle length, you may begin the test 11 days after your first period, since the average cycle length is 28 days.

Example: If your cycle length is normally 26 days, the chart indicates testing should begin on day 10.

I hated these ovulation strips for months - the test line was always dark and I was never able to capture the peak. I just assumed it was because of PCOS. After meeting with my OB, she recommend I give them another try. I read and followed the instructions to a “T”. I was finally able to capture a peak this month!

Tips that worked for me:
- do NOT use first morning urine (possibly too concentrated?)
- test around the same time TWICE a day
- keep testing after you’ve peaked
- read the test at 5 min (too soon = dye still running)

I've used these tests each of the three times I've gotten pregnant, so it's safe to say they work, and you don't need morning urine. Each time I wanted to get pregnant I did one test a day a week into my cycle and then started doing 2-3 tests a day as I approached my hypothetical fertile window. Because some LH surges can be just 12 hours you may miss it if you only test once a day. However, it's important to note that your "positive" may not look like the booklet positive where it's just as dark or darker than the control line. Always go by relative comparison to your previous tests. I haven't tried other brands but I'm pleased with these and would use them again.

I ordered these because I wanted a low cost option for doing many LH tests. Peeing into a cup doesn't bother me, but can be a bit messy- so if it bothers you, these might not be your best option. One bag lasted me 2 months of testing, with testing every day after the end of my period and several times per day when approaching ovulation. I found reading them a bit tricky especially as my LH surge approached- sometimes I wasn't sure whether the test line was darker than the control. However, I noticed that I would see the test line get darker if I tested several times in the same day, which was a good indicator that the next day I would get a clear positive result. I confirmed my reading of the test with the automated LH test reader on the Natural Cycles app.
