510 customers mention339 positive171 negative

Customers are mixed about the quality of the soldering iron. Some mention it's an awesome solder kit, with a temperature control, and a solder sucker. However, others say that it'd be better off using some wet/dry. The prongs are slightly too thin, and the material is a bit of a cheaper feeling plastic. Customers are mixed about the temperature control of the soldering iron. Some mention that it heats quickly, has an adjustable temperature control, and produces sufficient heat for splicing multiple wires. 81 customers mention52 positive29 negative

Customers are mixed about the size of the soldering iron. Some mention that it fits in the box, including extra solder and resin. They appreciate the smaller size, which makes it easy to store and carry. Decent enough for non-pro, light, occasional use.
4 Stars
Decent enough for non-pro, light, occasional use.
SUMMARY:A low-cost kit for people who only solder something occasionally, but not professional grade.Puts out a lot of heat, but unknown durability.Product is not unique to this seller (ie, reseller)Sketchy company website.I had no problem maintaining a good sized puddle and fusing some pewter parts. (Most solder is pewter.)INCLUDES:* 60W 200-450C iron with 6 different tips.* Sponge* Solder sucker* 40/60 (tin/lead) solder spool at 0.8mm* Stamped steel stand* Foam and hard plastic case.DETAILS:I have a Weller station, and a little portable already. I picked up this to replace the Radio Shack stick. For that, it's an improvement. It's all fairly low cost. There are similar kits for a few dollars less now that I've bought this, but it's already pretty low cost. The parts fit together, but the cable strain relief slides out of the housing a bit. The central body is just plastic, and there's a rubber boot over the screw joint to keep it from coming apart too easily. I re-snugged everything. It's definitely not as solid as the old 15W Radio Shack pencil irons.Inside is a ceramic heater, with a woven insulator. It's loose inside, and has an air gap except at the very tip. Don't toss it on your bench, or you might crack the heater. There's a red LED near the temp knob, and the temp knob is marked from 200-450C with a sticker. I'm pretty sure this will slide, and maybe even be not super accurate. BUT, it *is* a variable resistor for the heater, so that's much nicer than an average pencil iron. The power cord is 2-wire, non-polarized. The cord is fairly heavy duty. It doesn't say it's listed with any safety agency. It comes with an instruction sheet showing website, and basic info about the iron and its accessories. Nothing surprising there, unless you're new to soldering. They also make sure to point out that they are "an honest seller", which is sort of like adding "quality" to the name of a product. If it is such a thing, you shouldn't have to call that out. Also, the website has gibberish (sort of like lorem ipsum, but English) on some pages, and meaningless marketing filler on others. Their product list does not include this soldering iron. One concern is that you are not supposed to use this in a traditional upright stand. If the tip is down, and it's left on, the plastic will eventually soften/melt. I used it for about 10 mins and did not have any problems. It was only slightly warm.It comes with several tips: fine, medium, thick, chisel, thick chisel, and very wide angle. There are some decent, fine-point, curved tweezers with it. Very similar to some inexpensive ones I already have. Tips are strong enough and sharp enough. Black paint coating which claims to be antistatic. It has a "stand", which is really just a piece of stamped sheet metal. You can bend it up to use as a stand, but then it doesn't fit in the storage case. Kind of an oversight, as it will break after several re-bends. Fine for this price point, though the iron is round, and cannot use a normal stand. Kind of irritating. It also came with a pre-crushed/dried sponge. No tray though. Normal stuff. Use a damp sponge to clean off the tip of your iron as flux residue builds up. Re-tin the tip periodically too, since it will pick up other metals from your workpieces. There's a solder-sucker, spring loaded. Nothing amazing. Kind of hard to use since it is stand-alone. Maybe if you have three hands, or are really dextrous. I'd rather use solder wick most of the time, but maybe I'll experiment. It also has some 40/60 solder with it. Works as expected. Don't use it on food or water equipment, but great for electronics. I also used it on some lead-free pewter to fuse some pieces together, and the puddle was fine. The iron itself put out enough heat to keep a pretty good sized puddle going. It all comes with a little plastic case, which is a little bulky, but keeps me from losing all the parts. The only real issue is the stand cannot be stored when it's bent into a usable shape.Really, for the "discount" price, it's a good deal. Way more power than a 15W pencil. But, it *is* cheap. Tolerances are not great. Maybe it'll work until I break it, or maybe it will fail. I don't know yet. It's still pretty new to me. It did work as expected right out of the box. My guess is that there is no warranty past the time Amazon would take it back.AFTER I bought this, I found a slew of almost identical irons for less than the discount price of this. They didn't have the case, but I already have a kit box. I did already use it, and the price difference is not worth returning. Just, verify everything before you pick one up.
