Fantastic Mower

Fantastic Mower
Fantastic mower. People complain about no roto stop and mower shutting off you step away. Check my little hack. Two cable ties one on the handle to stop from shutting off. Looped 2nd one that slides. Set the loop right and it can be pulled up to keep mower running. As well aids in dropping the handle down as the bar is tucked back from the engine, not getting stuck… Regarding 2nd complaints about drive. You just have to modulate it. Do it right and works fantastic. Also partial mulch lets you put some clippings back to lawn. Then you don't need to empty the bag so much. Stores so easy. Grab end of folded handles to move around. Genius design.

The mower itself is outstanding. No assembly required out of the box. Just remove some packing materials, add oil (which is included) and gas and away you go. Started on the first pull. The electric start feature is great, as is the self-propelling mechanism. The bag is very easy to remove and replace. Since my previous mower broke (a Toro, which I will never buy again - very fragile and poorly designed self-propelling mechanism) my grass was very long when I first used the Honda - probably up to 12" in some places - and it handled it with aplomb. I think the double-blade design really helped in that regard.

The only thing that was not great with the experience was how long it took to get the mower. The vendor was MaxTool. They processed the order and shipped it relatively quickly, but it was shipped via a ground carrier and given they are in California and I am in Wisconsin, it took me over a week to get it. If you need a mower promptly and live in the Midwest or East, I'm sure there are better options. If time is not a factor, the vendor is fine.

After reading multiple reviews for the HRX217, I bought one....and I AM GLAD I DID!. Both my wife and I are starting to get up there in age and mileage, and the electric start and power-assist were at the top of the wish list. First, it was shipped fast. Second, It was easy to un-box and assemble. Third, it starts instantly. Fourth, it mows evenly and easily. Fifth, the power-assist drive is very helpful on my property (I don't have the "flat-postage-stamp yard". Sixth, You can adjust the "how fast" on the throttle easily. Now for the one negative that I have. The Ergonomics on the throttle control is a little quirky...not bad....just quirky. I had to adjust my grip a little from the "normal way" I grip the handles of mower to keep from cramping my thumbs. This is NOT a game changer, but if you are going to purchase this mower, you need to be aware of it. I've been a Honda owner (cars) for decades and their engineering teams continue to show their abilities to put out a great product.

What I like about the mower:
- the ability to bag cuttings, mulch or not mulch (flexibility)
- rear discharge offers advantages over side discharge as there is no side obstruction
- Durability and lots of power- never bogs down like my old mower
- folding handles makes it easy to store
- Even tho it is electric start it is not necessary as the mower is easy to start with the cord. The shutoff valve means I can run the carb dry after mower so it keeps the carb from gumming up
- self propulsion is a big plus. If you have a push mower you will understand
Cons
- the drive system does not work well when grass is wet.
- The bag is not all that large and fills up quickly and there is no real way to know when it is full.
- the mower is not light and maneuvering it around in tight spaces means manhandling

This is probably the best mower I've had. I have only used it once, but it's great. The engine is very good. The electric starter worked right out of the box. So the engine recharges the starter battery as you mow. And the super strong plastic deck is awesome!

The electric start doesn’t always work and I have to do the pull cord. The self-propelled really only works on flat ground. I have a little bit of a hill and I don’t go up and down on my hill. I go left to right using it with one hand while I’m below it or above the mower and I’m pushing it. The wheels are doing nothing and I think it’s because the body is made out of plastic and not metal. There’s not enough weight, I sold my John Deere to buy this was a big mistake not happy with this at all. New isn’t always better

Shame "Big Box Stores" wanted to force me to buy a battery operated mower. Charge time wasn't long enough for the amount of needed mowing not to mention expensed of getting second battery. Also, some sales reps explained if the batteries ever needed replacing, their replacement costs were almost as much as getting another mower.
