The best entry level printer
5 Stars
The best entry level printer
I've been extremely satisfied with the overall quality of this printer. It looks much better in person, as the light blue color makes it look really cheap and unappealing in the pictures (at least in my opinion). Initially, the color bothered me so much I didn't get this one the first time I was shopping for 3d printers...Just a bit of background... I read all of the reviews for beginner 3d printers and decided the Monoprice Select mini v2 would be the best choice. I reviewed all of the issues I would expect to encounter and all the fixes and decided it was worth the compromise. Right before pulling the trigger, the Pro model released. I had been concerned about the bed leveling process and the wiring issues on the old model and was happy to hear they fixed the wiring and included an auto-level system with a removable magnetic build plate. I figured they would address most of my immediate concerns so I ordered the Select Pro. I was woefully mistaken... Even with the "auto-level" built in, it took me at least an hour to measure the bed whenever the sensor acted up. There is no form of manual adjustment, so when it acts up you have to figure out how much it's off and guess (in mm) how much to off-set using the built-in interface. Still hardly worked, and print layers would come out uneven on one side every time. I eventually returned it (for a number of other additional issues) I decided to go with the Anycubic i3 Mega since everyone raved about it being the best printer under $300 and it allowed for manual leveling. After putting it together out of the box (which was exceptionally easy) I noticed the printers remarkable sturdy construction and how hard it was to level the bed. I'm confident the bed was warped because I spent even longer (2-3 hours) working on leveling the bed between each print with mixed results. I could level 3/4 corners and the center or 4/4 corners and have nothing adhere to the middle. The 3 month warranty and the constant issues with print quality due to the bed left me wary so I returned this one as well. I think I could have made it work if I disassembled the printer, but didn't want to after spending $330 on a printer. If I wanted to do that, I could save some money and buy the ender 3 for $180.At this point I am feeling pretty discouraged but I wasn't ready to give up just yet. There weren't many reviews on the X-one or X-one 2 but it was the highest rated 3d printer on amazon (4 1/2 stars. Only ones that came close were $800+). Most other printers have a lot more video reviews on youtube and no one seemed to talk much about the X-one 2. I took the chance and after buying it, when I took it out of the box I could immediately tell this one was the best of the 3 i had owned. The Anycubic I3 Mega had been head and shoulders about the monoprice printer, in terms of stability and overall build quality. The X-one 2 was even better and felt like an industrial printer. The print quality has been incredibly consistent and leveling the bed takes 5 minutes each time, even though there are only 3 screws. The only gripe I have was the build pad left my prints so stuck I had to raise the temperature to 80 degrees to pry prints off. (I tried for a day to get it off the bed after it was cooled with no luck until I tried that.) I was able to replace the bed sticker with a glass bed coated in a similar material to the Anycubic i3 Mega's "ultrabase" so now I can have consistent prints and easily remove them from the bed. I didn't need to use any clips to get it to work either. Just the glass panel and 5 strips of double sided thermal tape and it heats up much faster than any of the other 2 printers. They even include troubleshooting videos on the SD card for the most common problems you encounter. The most common of which is the extruder gets jammed if the retraction settings are too high. I was nervous about taking apart the nozzle cover and fan in order to get access but with the included videos, it took just 30 minutes and I was back to printing the first time. This is, full stop, the best intro printer. I don't care what the other online reviews say. Decent build size, full metal exterior, fully assembled, huge temperature range to print almost any material, and easy to level and maintain.-------------After using this for serveral weeks, I can confidently say this printer is still fantastic. It's been working very well with the wood filement. I've been busy printing toys for my niece and nephew. So far the results have been pretty promising. The surface finish looks better than the glass ultrabed print surface. If your looking for a reliable printer, look no further. The only reason I'm calling it entry level is the build plate size is still smaller than average and the 100 micron resolution isn't exceptional. That said, it could still be used to print smaller parts in a print farm.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great, reliable printer. Works out of the box. Started printing in 30 minutes. UPDATE.
Reviewed in the United States on May 6, 2019
Works out of the box. I have had no problems with this printer. The only thing that I've noticed is that some people who review this have been having trouble unloading and reloading the filament. They really shouldn't. It's incredibly easy. I can load and unload filament in the first try in less that a minute every time. The only thing that might cause trouble is length of the feeding tube. It is barely long enough, but it IS long enough. If you push the feeding tube ALL THE WAY into the retainer at the back of the machine, the tube can "pop free" from the extruder when it has to reach the far corners of the build plate. It's pretty easy to solve, but I think some people are having trouble, and there is no mention of this issue in the instructions that came with the machine. So, I'm passing on the knowledge.

Just push the feeding tube far enough so that it won't come loose (see pictures). Pushing it down all the way is completely unnecessary and can only cause problems. That should solve all feeding tube issues as far as I can tell. I've not had any trouble at all, and I've printed about 100 hours by now.

If people are still having trouble loading and unloading filament then I don't know why. I can't figure out what's so difficult about it. It's about the same difficulty as loading ink into a 2d printer. Heat up the extruder to the recommended temperature for the filament and follow instructions and common sense. Loading filament shouldn't take more than a minute if you do it right.

This is a great printer. Thanks QIDI for saving me assembly and maintenance time. My time is valuable, so I appreciate it.

UPDATE 5/21/2019: QIDI still going strong! I'm updating this to help people in need of a fix for the feeding tube issue. After about 200 hours of printing, I have had the feeding tube pop out from the extruder occasionally on large prints that reach the far corner. Although relatively minor, the feeding to popping free from the back of the extruder can be annoying, so I 3d printed the minor fix you see in the attached pictures. I've posted these fixes at Thingverse and it is available to anyone who decides they need it. Just search for "QIDI feeding tube fix" and you'll find it. I've never had a single feeding tube issue since and it relieves a lot of stress put on the feeding tube as the extruder moves.

I love this printer!

UPDATE 3/15/2020:
It's been almost a year since I ordered this printer and I've printed over a hundred objects. The print works as well today as it did brand new. Since I've had the printer I've replace the adhesive sticker on the bed after the old one got an air bubble (Qidi sent me a new one with no hassle for free). And I replaced the fan after I accidentally broke it with my Allen wrench whole unjamming a new brand of filament I was testing. I contacted Qidi knowing that my printer was out of warranty. Customer service was very nice and offered to sent me a replacement. All they asked was that I pay 9 USD for the shipping. They even sent me an instruction video link to help me even though I didn't request one. I will speak very highly of Qidi's customer service to anyone who asks. It's nice to know that they are willing to go above and beyond to help their customers.

That being said, the printer is still very reliable. Once I have tested and understand the temperature and speed optimal for a particular brand and type of filament, jams are very rare. The only reason my printer jammed was because I was testing a new brand of filament I wasn't familiar with.

I will also confirm that this printer can print with Nylon Carbon Fiber at max temperature with a hardened steel 0.4mm nozzle. I have done it many times with no jams or problems with the results.

I maintain that this is a quality 3D printer backed by quality customer support at a reasonable price.

5.0 out of 5 stars WOW!
Reviewed in the United States on September 19, 2017
I did a lot of research before choosing this one and I apparently made a great choice.

It is VERY sturdy and well built. It was quick to set up.
It comes with a nice manual and even some videos on the SD card to show you how to perform certain tasks; I was a bit amused to find a video on opening the box on there since you can't get to the SD card until you have unpacked everything; that video should really be on YouTube (it is!)

Rather than print their test model that comes with the printer, I went right ahead and printed a model I had made in Tinkercad (free on the web) and it came out perfectly. (The window in the picture is my very first attempt.) I have since printed 11 more of these windows, which will go outside in a building on my garden railroad. Each one is perfect!

An unexpected surprise was that I received X-ONE2 - it now has acrylic panels covering the openings. They come in a box and have to be screwed in place, but they do keep out any drafts. Very nice.
The touch screen is very responsive and easy to use and shows the product to be printed as well as how long it has taken to get to this point. It also displays information about the temperature of the bed and extruder.

Also on the SD card is the "slicer" software that generates a .gcode file from you .STL model. It works very well and is easy to use. No need to pay money for anything else.

I bought some other stuff along with this (a scraper, painter's tape, and another reel of PLA) but I haven't had to use any of it. Everything you need to get started is included (even a very nice scraper!). (Mine came with orange PLA, but I will be painting everything to go outside, so it doesn't really matter to me).

I was very impressed with the finished product. Smooth and no stray strings nor any blemishes. From reading about 3D printers in general, I thought that I would have to do a lot of tweaking of different parameters, and not get a good print until my 4th attempt, but it just worked right out of the box.

Everything about this printer just screams easy to use.

Update: After a month and a half of using this, if I could, I would update this to add stars (But, I can ONLY go to 5!). Above and beyond outstanding customer service. If you have ANY problem they are determined to SOLVE it.
Every time I print a new design I am just amazed to see it created on the printer. As a hobbyist, I use Autodesk Fusion 360 for free and it just works wonderful with this printer.
I continue to be impressed with this printer and the customer support!
Update January 2019: If I could add another star I would. Yes, I have had a few problems, but the technical support is absolutely outstanding and the printer continues to perform!
Update March 2019: I bought this printer 18 months ago and I am STILL getting excellent service from tech support. They respond quickly to any problems; typically they will provide a link to a short video showing exactly how to perform a procedure. Excellent support!

Update: Beware of 5 star reviews! I'm not changing my review here, but be aware that many vendors are offering discounts for a 5 star review. My price is a LOT higher than that.

Update: My very last 5 star review. I've been bombarded with offers if I change my review to 5 stars (it started with this one!). Apparently, even a 3 star review is viewed as "bad". I trust NONE, but will NEVER leave another 5 star review as there are just too many folks that are bought.
