LEGALITY
Here is the elephant in the room. Using emulation and ROM’s is a gray area but from a legal standpoint you can only play a ROM if you own a physical copy of the game. In the case of arcade games this is nearly impossible. In the case of home console games this could be financially and logistically prohibitive. There is no gray area with the NES Classic Edition. It is 100% legal. There are all sorts of moral debates one can have regarding the usage of ROM’s but the Mini is guilt free.
EASE OF USE
The retro pi is a lot of work to set up. Even individual games can require configuration. This is not for everyone. The NES Classic Edition can be set up in seconds. It has a very user friendly interface as opposed to the retro pi which can be challenging.
AVAILABLE GAMES
With the NES Classic Edition you get 30 games. With the retro pi you have more games available than you could ever play, including all the game on the Mini. As long as you can get the ROM and have a compatible emulator you should be good to go. Also, note that you can transfer the ROM’s and emulators to just about any PC and some have even hacked the Mini to load on hundreds more games. If that’s what you’re in to.
CONTROLLERS
When the NES Classic Edition was announced I heard a lot of complaints about it not having Bluetooth or wi-fi support and mocked them for the ridiculousness of their desires. Then I saw that the slightly more expensive raspberry pi had both. With wireless support I can use my Wii U pro controllers or pretty much any modern controllers including my beautiful 8bitdo NES30 pro. With the NES Classic Edition I got a remake of the classic NES controller with a teeny cord. They couldn’t even include two controllers. With the retro pi I can use controllers I already own and sit on my couch with my pi under my TV. With the Mini I would need to spend extra for another controller and they aren’t cheap.
You make the call on which is the best for you. The retro pi has unlimited games, if you know how to set it up, but it requires a lot of work and has some dubious ethics. The NES Classic has just 30 games but it’s a slick Nintendo interface with no legal gray areas. I wish the second iteration of the Mini had corrected some of the complaints of the original but given the way the machine is selling I guess Nintendo felt no need. Regardless, it’s a very cool device at a reasonable price.

Quick Look: Excellent system that comes with 30 games. Great value at $79.99 CDN. Worth a look for anyone who likes retro gaming, or wants to experience these old games for the first time.
When the NES Classic was announced, I was very excited. I actually still have my original NES with many games, but there were quite a few on here that I do not own outside of the Mario games, and thus I was very pleased with the selection. Plus it is nice to have backups just in case the originals stop working at some point.
The system itself is small and can be held in the palm of your hand. This is a great advantage for storage or transport, but unfortunately the cable length for the controller is rather short.
As far as how the system works, the dashboard that displays the games is fantastic and very easy to use. Each game has several suspend points (otherwise known as save slots), so you can have multiple saves. This is especially useful if you have more than one player in the household, and it allows everyone to maintain their saved game.
As mentioned before, the selection of games is wonderful. It has several that are hard to get original cartridges of these days, and so it fills a nice gap in that regard. I was overjoyed to own Mega Man 2 again (a game I lost as a child and never found again), and have spent extensive time playing through Final Fantasy. The emulation of the games themselves is essentially flawless.
Overall, if you are a gaming fan, this is a must buy. However, don't buy it at the inflated prices of the resellers. Wait for it to come back into stock.
Pros:
Great game selection
Dashboard is very easy to use
Save points/save states/suspend points
HDMI hook up makes it easy to game with newer televisions
Perfect emulation
Different display modes for more retro looks
Cons:
The HDMI cable is short
The controller cable is short
All things considered, this is a must buy for any gamer, and especially those who are Nintendo fans.
